Garry Winogrand was an American photographer from
NewYork born in 1928. His works spanned 25 years from
the 1950s to the early 1980s. He was widely considered
one of the most influential and important photographers of
the twentieth century. His images provided a prism for
which to view American life.
3. Garry Winogrand
Most of his images were captured with the cityscape of New
York City as his canvas, but he also shot photos all around the
country from the East to theWest coast. He captured the
unique essence of feminism, masculinity, intimacy, political
conflict and unrest and discord.
Winogrand’s photography was casual and candid, capturing
every day people doing every day things. He claimed to never
stage his photos. His photos were strictly black and white,
which initially displayed a simple theme, but once looked at
were complex in imagery.
4. Garry Winogrand
Winogrand was particularly interested in women, so much that
he published a book containing all pictures of women. This
book was called “Women are Beautiful” (1975). He later
published a book on men and animals as well. The book
containing men was called “The Gang’s All Here” captured
men of young physical prowess, old men smoking cigars, and
businessmen off to meetings.
Throughout his life,Winogrand received numerous awards
including several Guggenheim Fellowship awards, and a
National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship award. At the
time of his death Winogrand left behind more than 300,000
images with more than 500 rolls of undeveloped film and
4,100 rolls of developed film he had not reviewed.

The three woman walking
by and the boy sitting on
the bench all have their eyes
fixed on the man in the
wheelchair.This piece shows
a mixture of different social
and economic backgrounds.

Silver Gelatin Print

While this image appears
joyful and candid, there is
actually a humorous
controversy regarding the
connection between the
half eaten ice cream come
and the headless mannequin
in the background.This
photo is example of how
most of his images of
women looked.

Hard Hat Rally, 1970
Gelatin Silver Print
National Gallery of Art
This piece shows the
craziness that was politics
during this time. It’s
interesting that the whole
scene is focused around the
one man in the middle and
that outside objects are all
looking towards him and
the news reporter is
holding the microphone up
to him.Winogrand captured
a great with a lot going on
for the viewer to analyze.

Gelatin Silver Print

This piece shows six
women sitting between two
men on a bench.They are
all engaging in girlish
activities, chatting away.This
photo displays the
mannerisms of women and
the popular behaviors they
possessed.This also gives a
glance at segregation issues
during this time.
9. Garry Winogrand
(American, 1925 – 1985)
Metropolitan Opera, 1951
Gelatin Silver Print
National Gallery of Art
This is my favorite photo of
Winogrand’s.The way he
captured elegance in this
photo is beautiful. It helps
that the people are
beautiful as well. This image
is simple and pure, but
displays two people having a
good time.
