1. How I Learned And Developed My Writing Skills
This semester I was surprised by how much I actually learned and developed my writing skills. I
was given the opportunity to learn the many steps that it is required to become a good writer.
Writing requires a lot of work. It consists of various steps; prewriting, drafting, rewriting,
proofreading and publishing. . All of these components are extremely important, and necessary, and
will need to be follow to improve student's writing.
I feel my writing has improved due to the help of the writing process and all the writing
assignments I experienced. I was able utilized each of these components this semester. I wrote
various journals and two essays, which were very challenging to me. The first essay I was asked to
write, was a Narrative essay about an experience in which later I questioned my actions. At first, I
was very nervous due to I have never written an essay before. I did not even know where to begin.
I struggled during the whole process of writing an essay. My biggest problem of all was putting
my thoughts in order so I could make sense of what I wanted to say. I brainstorm for days trying
to figure out a topic. With the help of the eLearning text information on module 2, how to choose
a topic and developing a working thesis I started to write down some ideas. With the help of
Module 3, Introduction to Narrative Essay, and the examples that were provided, I was able to start
getting some ideas of what I wanted to write about. I finally came up with, Moving away

2. The Importance Of Reading And Writing Skills
Reading and writing are necessary skills that were taught to me at a young age. From, creative
writing classes, speed reading tests, countless English based classes, and research papers I have
learned about myself as a reader and writer. My education from preschool, elementary, and high
school were heavily based on reading and writing, which shaped my writing style and how I analyze
information. Now that I am an experienced student, I have learned the value of having the important
skills that were taught because it aids in the writing process and helps to eliminate fear the fear of
writing. Jotting down ideas before getting started on a writing assignment, organization of thoughts,
and proofreading were some of the important procedures that elevated my academic writing skills.
Academic writing and reading skills allows us to analyze and respond in the correct formulated
manner. To academically write well, one must master the correct reading skills. While reading, it
is important to look for contextual clues, infer about the facts being read, and digest the main
ideas. For some individuals, their reading skills may be better than their writing skills, but it is
necessary to make sure each set of skills elevate as your writing experience matures. To
academically write well, tone and audience are key points that must be considered: "Our words on

Improving Business Writing
Why is writing important in business? Writing is essential in any form of business. We use writing
in all types of communication such as: email, facsimile, letter writing, etc. Writing skills are
important to the business professional because it prepares the workplace for well–written business
communications. The three topics I will cover can serve as an outline for improving writing skills in
businesses. The topics are principles of business writing, how to write an effective business letter,
and how to improve business writing within the company. These topics will aid in examining and
improving our company's employees writing skills.
First, there are "four principles of writing: Empathy,...show more content...
Following the Attention Line is the Body. The body contains detailed information about the
topic. The body includes the introductory paragraph, one or more body paragraphs, and a
concluding paragraph. Finally, there is the closing. The closing is usually ended with a
complementary closing and signature. A list of examples include: Sincerely, Cordially, Best
regards, and Yours very truly. Remember to capitalize the first word in the complimentary
closing and end it with a comma. After the closing, there is a copy line. When the copy line is
used, other people know who will be receiving a copy. The copy line usually includes a symbol: c:
for copy, pc: for photocopy, and bc: blind copy (used only to limit readers of other copies). The
names of the recipients should follow these symbols listed in organizational rank (Writing@CSU:
Writing Guide, 2004, p. 1). All of the components discussed above are effective ways to write an
effective business letter. An effective business letter speaks to a specific reader. Therefore, the right
type of business letter must reach the reader. The most common types of business letters are: 1)
Acknowledgement Letters, 2) Adjustment Letters, 3) Complaint Letters, 4) Inquiry Letters, 5) Order
Letters, and Response Letters. (Writing@CSU: Writing Guide, 2004 p. 1). These type letters helps
guide the reader to understanding what the writer intended. Nothing can be more

5. Pre Writing Techniques Essay
PRE WRITING TECHNIQUES
Prewriting is the first stage of the writing process, typically followed by drafting, revision, editing
and publishing. Elements of prewriting may include planning, research, outlining, diagramming,
storyboarding or clustering etc. Prewriting is important because it helps you generate ideas for
writing.
Some of the prewriting techniques are:
1. Outlining
2. Free Writing
3. Thinking maps
4. Cubing
5. Directed Questioning
6. Note making and note taking
7. Brain storming
8. Clustering
9. Charting
10. Scanning
The detail of each skill along with its examples is given below. 1. Outlining

book, speech, or...show more content...
Note taking is a technique which is used when a person is reading or hearing something for the
first time and he is trying to jot down the key information so he can use it later. Note making is
when you return to those notes and make notes on them. This means you just go through notes, put
things into your own words or summarize them and highlight key points. This technique is useful
while gathering information for a respective article from books and lectures etc. Examples: 1. This
technique is helpful when you are going to study a language other than you mother tongue.
Because it is not easy to remember a lot of knowledge and vocabulary of the secondary language in
one attempt. So there will be a need to read it again to learn and remember more about new language.
2. If you are attending a technical lecture (e.g. related to some machine or something else), it is a
good practice to make lecture notes because you might need them to make comprehensive
understanding of the topic.
7. Brainstorming
It means thinking of as many ideas as possible in a short amount of time. Brainstorming involves
capturing all of the thoughts, ideas, and fragments in your head and writing them down on paper.
Brainstorming is an informal way of generating topics to write about, or points to make about your
topic. The important point about brainstorming is that there should be no

As a college student it is important to take writing as a communication skill very serious it's best
that you consider English class as a gift or a tool in life. But writing can be hard in college when
it comes to essays, and class work but as you as you learn more in English the better you get at it.
Here is one example that I found in this article, your success with academic writing depends upon on
how well you understood what you are doing as you write and then how you approach the writing
task in the near future that right there is something that I would follow when it comes to academic
writing that is one example from Lennie Irvin that inspired me to keep writing in English class. For
writing everyone has an idea about something I mean most people have crazy ideas about what they
are doing when they write an essay about anything for example people would write about US laws,
governments, court systems, military, the media, or anything on a subject that would help you on an
essay for anything or on anyone. The myths about writing some writers will write...show more

8. Reflective Essay on Writing Skills
I always thought that my writing skills were pretty good until I started this class. It has been
thirteen years since I graduated high school and I quickly realized that I had a lot of "refreshing"
to do as far as writing papers. I actually felt very discouraged when I took the grammar test and did
not score very well. I knew that I had to dedicate myself and put a lot of effort into this class to
really improve. The practice quizzes were a major help to refresh on everything I must have
forgotten since high school. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should
master. Writing is such a major part of communication in this day and age so being able to write
an intelligent paper will benefit you not just through school but also through life. Writing skills
are a reflection of intelligence and I want to perfect my writing the best that I can. Being able to

"Why continuing skill development is important for my continuing studies and future employability"
As much as learning is an on going process, skills development follows the same trend. Nowadays,
competition has been the hallmark in every corporate endeavour and to say the least, each product
seeks for competitive edge. I must not stay behind in this race for leadership and excellence because
my future employability depends largely on how I perfected my skills during this period of
continuing skill development and advancement. So what priorities should I consider necessary
during this stage of my life? Skills are competencies expected to produce input for the organization I
intend to belong. Communication skill appeals to me...show more content...
However, leadership competency is also an on going process and it demands lots of energy and
self–confidence on my part to stand up before others and accept the responsibility to serve as
guide towards a certain goal. To be a good leader, I must learn to focus on people because they are
the object of leadership. People are neither objects to posses nor instruments to use. Each person
has qualities and skills that a good leader must learn to appreciate and allow them to prosper. As a
good leader to these people, I must be on my own person and should show originality of ideas and
unequalled skills to trust. Leadership skill leads others to follow a path or a vision that I would
present in order for us to achieve our goal. However, I am not the only person who would build the
goal but it is a concerted effort of all the people in my organization. (Kotler, 2006, p. 212) Finally, as
a leader, I must learn the moral and legal values of leading my followers toward a positive
direction. In the corporate landscape, being a leader is not simply putting pressures or coercing
the workforce to act in accordance with what I want. I have a model leader and he truly inspired
me after I read his biography. His name is David Pottruck, the president and co–CEO of the Charles
Schwab Corporation. His company's mission is "to provide customers with the most useful and
ethical financial services in the world" (http://www.schwab.com) At present, Charles Schwab

10. What Are The Skills Of Language Skills Essay
Learning English as a foreign language demands learning the four skills of the language which are
reading, writing, listening and speaking. The four skills of language are divided into two groups:
the productive skills (writing and speaking), and receptive skills (reading and listening). In this
paper much attention will be paid mainly to one category of language skills and those are productive
skills. In my experience as a teacher of English in Egypt, I have met many students who have some
challenges with writing and speaking English. This essay will spot the most common challenges that
my students faced and how they overcame these challenges.
Starting with speaking skill, fluency is the main target of teaching speaking. According to Hughes

When the students translate Arabic into English they sometimes use words causing
misunderstanding and confusion. For example, a sentence like "Flu infection spreads by peace with
hand" is grammatically correct but meaningless. The student means "Flue infection is caused by
greetings and handshakes". The words greetings and peace are of the same meaning in Arabic so the
student wrote one instead of the other.
To overcome such a challenge, EFL learners have to read more texts in the target language to
enhance their vocabulary and how to put vocabulary into context. Also it is important for teachers to
make the students aware of the differences in the structure of their native language and the target
language. The only way to improve students' speaking and writing skills is to put them into use.
Students' writing, like their speaking, can only benefit from exposure to a wide–range of situations
which require specific skills and language. A teacher will want to ensure that she/he is giving
students practice in all areas of writing and

11. Improving My Writing Skills Essay
This particular article has been of quite some help with improving my writing abilities! Do you ever
find yourself rewriting instead of writing? If you are a writer and are in need of helpful hints with
what I think is the most important part of the writing process, revision. In Internal Revision the
author, Donald Murray, emphasizes this writing skill that is the least used but one of the most
important. In the first place, some writers do not actually know what the term rewriting is. Rewriting
basically says the definition in itself, re–writing. It could also be the process of improving what you
are writing. For some people, like myself, when I hear "rewrite" it is usually followed with a sigh
and an "UGH". I think of it as time consuming and just a burden.
I have to reconsider these feelings, mainly because if I want my writing to improve I need to take
the time to look things over again.I tend to have these feelings towards rewriting because it use to
be a punishment for me. If you did not score high on a test, the teacher would make you rewrite the
whole definition of a word numerous times until you could get it correct. I think this writing skill is
the least researched because of laziness. I can say for myself that it is quite an accurate statement.

The steps are prevision, vision, and revision. In my opinion, writers rely on these certain steps to
begin the writing process. These certain steps are the ones I use, there is no exact writing process
because every writer is different. Since this article talks about revision, it only makes sense to
explain what this is. In this article Murray states that revision is what the writer does after a draft is
completed to understand and communicate what has begun to appear on the page. When revising it
is important to read what you have written. Eventually, the draft usually changes as you alter your

12. Self-Assessment Of My Writing Skills
Writing skills are an important part of communication and teachers in training should develop good
grammar, spelling and punctuation. The self–assessment of my writing skills was not difficult,
because I know I need to improve all of them. As an English learner that I am, it takes longer to
write a document not only because of the pre–writing process but, because I have to make sure I am
writing my ideas in a way that the reader can understand the correct message. In addition to it, in
today's electronic age, we communicate more often through written words and it makes imperative
the use of good writing skills. Furthermore, the way I write can impact the respect people have for
me as a teacher in training and future professional. The first English...show more content...
Besides it, my reputation as a professional is important. As a special education teacher in training I
want to acquire a good name based on the respect of the parents of my students, colleges and
superiors. That respect will be earned only through my professional skills. The profession of a
special education teacher requests to write Individualized Educational Plans. An IEP is a legal
document where goals and objectives are written and through them an educator makes a deep
impact in a child's life. I have to improve not only grammar, spelling and punctuation but also
acquire the technical vocabulary used in special education. Success is made up from a great
number of little steps each of them may be seem so small and insignificant to some people, but
those steps for me dictate my future. I will do my best to keep improving my writing skills and
practice is the only way to do it. I know, prewriting is essential to create a good document. In
addition, the proofreading to clarify mistakes is needed too. I am aware of the importance of
having good writing skills to produce good IEPs. Practice, and more practice will be the only way to

having to choke out words to write down. In this memo I will describe my writing projects and
how they made me become a better writer, and how they will continue to help develop me into a
becoming a more prosperous writer.

can often write many pages about things that I am interested in. I know that I have more learning to

expanded and my writing will have improved.
My Experience With Writing Arguments
I am unaware of any writing arguments. The only thing I can really think of is writing a research
paper with the intent to change people's minds on a certain subject. I remember researching for
weeks in the library, looking through magazine after magazine. I had searched for enough
information to write a ten–page paper. The writing process of the paper took several weeks but
when I had finished, all the hard work was worth the effort. I learned many things from that course
such as that you need to search for all the information you can because it is better to have too much
information than not enough. Also that course taught me many things about making references to
the authors of the articles I used for my paper. I remember writing out note card after note card and
keeping all the necessary information about each book or magazine. That course taught me to
become a better writer and to respect how much detail really goes into a research paper like I had
written. Other than that, I have not really had much experience in

14. Reflection On My Writing Skills
Reflection
My writing skills which I have worked on over the few months I have been in English 102 have
changed quite a bit in my opinion. There are many things which I have improved upon that were
amongst my weaker writing skills when the year began. On the opposite side of that point, there are
also many things which I still need to improve upon if I want to truly elevate my writing to a level
that I will be confident in. Finally, I have gained new skills outside of writing from this class,
particularly the activities which we did in class at various points throughout the year. These things
all cumulate together to give me an appreciation of English courses which I did not previously have.
Throughout this semester there are many skills that I have noticed have improved through the
constant writing of essays for this class. The one that I find most noticeable is a habit I had long
struggled with which was essentially my tendency to be over necessarily wordy when writing my
essays. I believe that I was able to somewhat fix this subconsciously, just by knowing that I was no
longer in high school, and could no longer get by with just attempting to fill up my word count. I
also believe I have greatly improved in my topic selection. In high school I would throw caution to
the wind and just pick whatever topic came to mind just in an effort to get it done. I have been
much more calculated in college, and I believe that it has helped me write better essays. While these

weaknesses that I need to work on in the 10th Grade. This year I have been able to strengthen many

mornings we'd go around the classroom to different stations and play different games, then we'd go

my hobbies. I also found writing very interesting. I enjoyed writing papers for all of my English

I learned different ways to write and I believe that I always met my teacher's expectations in my

I was terrified walking into my third attempt at Engl 1010 this semester. I attempted and failed

assignment. " I realized for the first time my "easy high school years" had hurt me academically, and
that as a college freshman, my reading and writing skills were at an eighth grade level. I tried, but
was unable to keep up with the other students. I was a homeschooled, seventeen year old, lost in this

20. I Am Confident For My Writing
Writing has never been my strong suit so I understood why I had been placed into EWRT 211.
Before this class I had not written an essay since I was a junior in high school (six years ago). I
have always struggled with writing, but it was not until my first diagnostic essay that I realized how
terrible my writing skills were. Everything about the diagnostic essay screamed that I did not know
what I was doing. Since then, I have noticed a vast improvement in my writing. This class has
taught me how to become a better writer by creating stronger theses and by knowing why rough
drafts are important to writing. Nevertheless, I still need to develop better strategies to manage my
writing. I chose my essays, What Influences Teens To Become Adults and Resilience Among College
Students, because they demonstrate my growth throughout this class. Even though I still need to
improve on managing my writing, I am confident in moving to EWRT 1A because I have learned
how to create strong theses, and how rough drafts have a great impact on my writing.
Without a strong thesis an essay falls apart and fails to let the reader know what they are trying to
say. For instance, in my rough draft Stop of Reality my thesis was very vague and did not meet the
requirements for the essay. It stated, "Although the injustice that these [Native American] women
face still continue to this day, the women these three tribes face...will slowly begin to see justice for
the crimes that were committed upon them"

1)I have improved in numerous ways during this semester in Composition 1. I have enhanced my
writing skills such as being able to write proficiently, and being able to form an essay in a set
amount a time similar to the 50 minute essay tests in class. This course has taught me to broaden my
vocabulary throughout my essays in order for them stimulating and captivating. While writing
essays and creating the works cited pages, I have learned to accurately cite websites, books, and
articles. I have also learned to suitably place and refer to where I found the material used for the
essays within, and at the beginning of, paragraphs. When writing my essays I have learned to
transition smoothly, however, I still struggle with it every once in a while, the writing I do
continues to enhance. My speech has also improved from standing in front of the class and
presenting a group project along with fellow classmates. I now know what it is like and what to
expect the next time I do it. I have improved in many ways during this course and I feel, overall, the
portfolio represents my progress greatly.
