  1. Presenter Notes: **Ask your audience to raise their hands if they have been to the mall, the store, or the coffeeshop in the last week. Most likely all of the audience members will have been to one of those places. This is a good illustration for how easily our lives can intersect with victims and their traffickers.**-The mall is one of the biggest recruiting grounds for pimps, along with the bus stop neighborhood parks, etc. They love to hang out where youth are. Lacy’s pimp stalked her all over her neighborhood, bumping into her at the grocery store and at Starbucks. While she thought these were accidental meetings, it was all part of his plan to gain her trust and build rapport. **Ask your audience if they could identify potential signs of recruitment, and to discuss what those would be.**-During the recruitment and grooming process, pimps will shower their victims with compliments designed to gain their trust and make them feel flattered. They may be multiple years older than their victims, but treat and talk to them as a girlfriend. Pimps will choose victims who may display more insecurities, a lack of self confidence or self esteem. They will make big promises about what they can buy or acquire. They may be accompanied by other females who also work to convince the victim that he is trustworthy and capable of doing everything he promises. He may promise the youth a career in modeling, acting, dancing, etc. He may paint a glamorous picture of what life would be like with him, while simultaneously manipulating the girl to turn away from her family and friends.
  2. Presenter Notes: -Adults (parents, teachers, counselors) often do not recognize the signs of recruitment or grooming until the child has been trafficked. Or, if they do recognize the indicators they aren’t sure how to intervene appropriately. Its important that all adults know some of the major and minor indicators of grooming. -Changes in Behavior: Youth often exhibit changes in their behavior as the pimp begins his/her manipulation. The youth may being skipping school or not returning home in order to spend more time with the pimp. The youth may sneak out after hours, lie about where they are going or refuse to divulge their whereabouts. She may begin dressing less appropriately than before, have a different attitude, desire more independence and seem to have more secrets. Its possible the youth will show signs of physical abuse if the pimp begins being forceful while she is still at home. She may also seem withdrawn, depressed or distracted. Not all pimps use their grooming phase to ply affection. Some pimps will employ a the tactic of blackmail, bullying or harassment to get a young girl to do what they want. Regardless of their tactics, any changes in behavior should be noted as a cause for concern. -Changes in Lifestyle: As pimps begin to groom their victims, they will often work to prove their affection or their financial status by showering the victim with gifts or material possessions. She may suddenly have nicer clothes or accessories, shoes, etc. She may have her hair or nails done. She may begin talking about having more money, or access to money. These manipulative tactics almost always work since young girls are especially susceptible to the “romeo” approach from pimps- desiring to have a mature boyfriend who can take care of them. Pimps use branding (tattooing) as a sign of ownership and loyalty. They will often brand their victims with their name or symbol. While this most likely takes place after the victim has been prostituted, its still possible that she will get a branding while living at home. Any changes in lifestyle should be noted.-Changes in Peers: Youth do not typically make drastic changes their peer circles. If you notice that a youth has changed his/her sphere of influence, pay close attention to who they are associating with. While some pimps are teens themselves, most pimps are older than their victims and more readily to practice their skillful psychological coercion. Pimps typically have other friends who are involved in drugs or pimping, or have other females that work with them who will also participate in the recruitment/grooming process. This new circle of friends will institute themselves as the new “family” for a young girl and encourage her to sever ties with other friends and biological family. The youth may be skipping school to attend parties, or at other times. She may show signs of drug or alcohol abuse. At times, the new peers could be involved in a local gang who is recruiting females with the purpose of selling them for sex. The youth won’t realize that these are the specific plans for her, but she would be flattered that a group of people are recruiting her to join the gang (which provides instant protection, resources and social status). Signs of gang affiliation: preference for clothes or items in certain colors (red, blue, black); notebook graffiti of gang symbols; carrying weapons; hanging out with known gang members.
  3. Presenter Notes: The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has a 24-hr hotline for reports on any type of sexual exploitation with children. They receive reports regarding sexually explicit images and erotica, online enticement of a child, prostitution, molestation, or any misleading information on the internet that pertains to sexual material of children including unsolicited communications.
