1. Film assignment
Genre1: horror
Film one: Conjuring 2
In the conjuring 2, the location denoted in the opening scene is evidently a basement as
close ups and mid shots have been used to portray this. Straight away the audience will be
able to pick out what genre the film is. As this is the beginning of the film, this setting has
been used to create a mysterious and creepy atmosphere due to the low key lighting. This
lighting technique is quite expected for the horror genre due to the impact it creates on the
audience. This setting is a very significant part of the film, as it reveals the plot of the
storyline. The way in the basement is somewhat vacant but full of toys. It’s. also quite a
stereotypical horror scene as its again, well known to the horror genre-this creates an eerie
atmosphere. This impacts the audience
as they would get that adrenaline rush
horror films are known to do and make
the audience quite freaked out.
The way in which the clothes are
presented by the characters, connote
normality, their actually trying to signify
clothes that were worn 40 years ago.
This is somewhat evident as their
fashion sense seems outdated- this helps indicate to the audience
an aspect of the storyline as it allows us to know, as viewers of the
film, it is going to be set back in time and not present day. The costumes may suggest that
they’re going to uncover a hidden story or even foreshadow something much deeper. This
impacts the audience as they are constantly finding little clues , as they do this it is building
up a bigger suspense and giving the filmmakers the fearful and shocked reaction they
planned on.
Throughout the majority of the opening scene , the light denoted is evidently low-key, like in
the basement , its very dark and he lighting helps depict a frightening but exhilarating
experience for the viewers. Everything is dark and mysterious when Vera farmiga is
predicting what may happen, this clearly juxtaposes what is really happening as the lighting
is high key is visible and everything around her is visible unlike her predictions. This
juxtaposition may intrigue the audience as they will want to find out why her prediction for
the future are so dark compared to the real life . the lighting is very important to the horror
genre and its mise en scene as it helps connote the thrilling atmosphere the film wishes to
achieve.
There are many props denoted in the opening scene for example, the camera equipment
used to record the supernatural occurrences. These props already inform the audience that
the film is going to be thrilling. There are also a lot of props placed in the basement to make
it look relatable for the audience and nothing out of the ordinary.
Ref :1
2. Looking at the narrative structure of this film , todorov’s theory of equilibrium applies to this
film. It can be seen that their family who lives are later turned upside down are living a
normal happy life and have just moved house. Then their equilibrium I disturbed by a
haunting so strong it threatens to destroy their whole life. Then with the help of he warrens
their lives are restored so equilibrium is then restored.
Film 2 : Annabelle
The clothing worn by the characters in Annabelle is a generic reflection for the time period
which was 1969. This has an impact on the audience due to potential nostalgia, this could
further lead to worry and fear as the audience could empathy towards the character as they
could start to think that the catastrophic event that is yet to occur could happen to them.
This feeling for the audience could also be encouraged by the location. The location is a
suburban city with an inner city nearby. There is a church and a hospital which is normality
in some places. This affects the audience as they may feel like it could happen to them.
The main prop is the doll Annabelle. A possessed doll is notoriously themed object as people
find the innocent doll like shell to be deceiving .
The lighting at the beginning is dark as it is in the evening and this matches the themes at
the time .when the couples move , nearly all of the scenes are shot in broad daylight which
is representing a new life for the couple. This then shifts to the dim shadowing when
supernatural occurrences begin to happen. This is typical to the horror genre as it allows the
audience to know there is going to be a eventful scene coming up. As time think the scene
progresses the lighting becomes brighter even though the themes are still dismal this
usually is what a horror film will include, however I think that in the scene where Annabelle
starts a fire and locks the child in a room , he natural daylight is used to show that Annabelle
is a real human being trapped inside a doll and that she is very powerful.
This then creates a big impact on the audience as they would find out the plot twist and may
have a sense of relief as they find out that vital piece of information that brings the film
together.
For the first 20 seconds in this film , the most frequent shot is over the shoulder shot, or a
tracking shot, following them – this could be because we are looking into the characters
private lives but we are not yet quite fully involved as an audience. This also helps to
understand that there is something following them, not a person but a presence or spirit.
Ref:2
3. This benefits the horror genre as of the impact it will share upon the audience. It will create
curiosity and gives them a piece of information needed . following this, there is then several
medium shots which zoom in, this type of shot is what we should be focusing on and
therefore tells us that we should, for example , be registering facial expressions. When the
shots zoom, they can focus on something like john and Mias hands together. This tells us
that either there relationship is very strong or that their relationship is being tested. this
technique is vital if you want to make a horror filmas they director has cleverly done this to
get the audience involved with the film and keep them engaged.
Looking at the narrative structure of this film, it seems to be inspired my Todorovs theory of
equilibrium. But also, it shows a sense of Propps theory. This is evident due to the roles of
characters, the doll, being the villain, the princess I think would be played by Mia , the
helpless women whos life is at risk due to the villain and is rescued by the hero.
Genre 2: romance
Film 1: 10 things I hate about you.
In the opening sequence we start by witnessing a sketch being drawn however the editing is
very fast and this makes the sketch finish quite quickly. The sketch could potentially
represent childhood as I looks like it has been done with crayon. This is used to reflect their
personalities of the teenagers onto the audience. The music is really upbeat and this helps
emphasise the sketch as it can impact the audiences emotions towards the films as it can
get them potentially, quite hyped up and excited for the film.. we then witness a
transmission shot into an establishing shot of the city that was sketched. This affect helps
encourage that positive exciting feeling for the audience.
The front of the title looks like its been made is doodling on paper. This shows that the
characters in the filmare based in high school. This is a stereotypical setting for a to
teenage romance – this allows the audience to relies the genre of the film, in this case it is
romance.
He director shifts focus onto a blue car and turns out the music the audience can already
hear at this part of the film, is diegetic sounding as it is playing through the stereo in the
car. The camera shows us a teenage girl who is clearly obsessed with how people view her
and how she views herself. This is the stereotypical appearance of a snob in a romance high
school film. As the camera moves away so does the music, the camera then shows a red car,
Ref:3
4. this car is also playing music . the change in music represents the contrast in personalities of
the two girls. The choice of rebellious music helps the audience picture the girls personality
in better more clearer way.
With this kind of genre , there is always a spoilt teenage girl and a different character who
contrasts massively to their characters presentation. With doing this it also helps identify
the genre of the audience.
We then see a shot of a door in the high school , the shot is focusing on the words
“guidance councilor “. This cinematography technique almost foreshadows the councilors
role in the film . it suggests the audience that they play a big part in the film.
The audience then sees a teenage boy in the office , the focus on his character shows the
audience he is also a main character .
The body language and shot types of different characters suggest that it is a rom-com as
throughout there is a lot of flirty narrative language, and groups of girls stereotypically
talking about boys. This is shown also as throughout the film, two at the most relationships
start to appear. In rom-com feature films, this is often the case, there’s always one couple
that you expect to end up together, but at either the middle/end another couple is
blossoming. I feel like this is used in rom-coms to portray more than one point of view from
a relationship.
Props used in this film, again it’s stereotypically American high school-like, also including
some American memorabilia to promote the identity, for example , from flags. Other props
include those of American style canteens, canteen trays and lockers etc. Another factor
would be how props are used in bedrooms of girls, suggesting different personalities from
posters of interests, etc.
Use of costumes in this film doesn’t nessisarly portray what type of people they are meant
to be, as the costumes are meant to be casual school ware, some of which is rather clashy,
as this was filmed in the 90s. In some cases, on particular characters though – use of low cut
tops and short skirts suggest what type of person they are within the group and how the
differ from each other. In one of the scenes near enough at the end of the film, there is a
typical “prom” during this, there is one major reference to Shakespeare’s play Romeo and
Juliet, a couple dressed in rather Shakespeare-style costumes re-act out this part of the play
in the film.
Ref:4
5. The overall narrative storyline of a rom-com always involves some sort of abbreviation of
Propp’s theory, of course in my chosen film10 Things I Hate About You this applies, as it’s
related to Romeo and Juliet in so many ways. What makes this film slightly different
though, is how the two people of a same nature but different to everybody else in a
stereotypical school you didn’t expect to get together, do – the “un-dateables” of the
narrative storyline – which gives the unexpected ending to the viewers, this type of ending
can be used instead of a structured ending or cliff-hanger.
Film form conventions throughout feature films involve a mixture of diegetic and non-
diegetic sound, again this is a convention used to re-assure the audience and guide them
throughout the narrative, as also the non-diegetic/diegetic sound could relate to
convocation in the film and/or reassure the audience of a characters personality. Rotating
locations are often used throughout feature films, usually there is 3 to 4 main ones at
maximum – in this case there are 2, the main being the school and the other being a home
of the two main characters. The filminvolves a main majority of these two locations being
switched up, although intertwined with these locations are other minor locations used for
another part of the narrative storyline. As for the lighting used, Feature films can vary – for
example, obviously a horror films lighting would be a lot darker and more eerily than a teen
based rom com. The lighting in 10 things I hate about you is quite natural and flatters the
natural and overdone make-up of the different characters throughout this film, which is a
standard lighting used in many feature films to do this – although not in every genre as it
can vary on how the characters are wanted to be perceived by the audience. Looking at the
editing in this film, it’s hardly noticeable like many feature films – although saying that in
some feature films it can be very obvious, in 10 Things I hate about you there are some
quick sharp endings but that’s all you can really notice on the editing side of things. Use of
Camera shots/views is fital in feature films as different shots can show different moods and
feelings towards something, long shots are used quite frequently throughout 10 Things I
hate about you – this is used I feel to create a whole view perspective from different
personalities. Close ups are also mainly used throughout, especially of two different people
at a time to create a feeling and mood towards the audience and what they should be
seeing going on.
Film 2 : clueless
A montage sequence is used within the opening sequence. This montage technique clearly
establishes the film’s genre and main protagonist . this montage represents a teenage girl
partaking in typical teenage activities, this sequence is good as it shows the viewer a lot
about the lifestyle successfully . from this particular montage viewer will learn that the main
protagonist is a rich white American girl. The title of the filmis ‘clueless’ and its edited and
appears at the beginning of the film. the sequences introduces the enigma of chers way too
glamorous routine and the editing of the opening sequences represent that it is a
mainstream film.
The opening sequence is very good at establishing the protagonist of the film, which is one
of the generic conventions of opening sequences . it does this well through the use of
cinematography and other conventions. Within this opening sequence there are many shots
6. to establish the famous lifestyle. For example, a birds eye view on cher driving an
expensive jeep , this shot was to help introduce chers character more in depth .
An over the shoulder shot is shown when she is looking in the mirror connoting her vain
personality this shows the audience what kind of stereotypical character she is. It also
allows the audience to feel more involved with the film as it shows them her private life.
The mise en scene shows the genre of the film is another generic convention of film opening
sequences. The computer generated close cher owns presents her wealth and how well she
shows if off- this shows her personality more in depth for the audience to understand her
character more.
The huge chandelier shown within the opening connotes the families wealth and upper class
status within society .
The mise en scene in this film strongly presents the coming age of the genre of the film. This
genre is represented through stereotypical teen activities such as shopping.
A suitable non diegetic music track used during the opening sequence is ‘kids in America’ by
Kim Wilde . this links well to the film as of the storyline.
After the montage sequence is over, a voice over by the main protagonist starts to talk
about her preppy life . this allows the audience to establish the characters behavior. As the
voice over begins, behind it, ‘fashion ‘ by David Bowe plays which links to what is happening
at the point of the film.
Cher’s character is one big walking and talking advertisement. In fact, the very first line in
the movie is: “You’re probably going, ‘Is this like a Noxema commercial or what?’” The
young aristocrats drive around in expensive cars, go shopping, and worry about how they
are going to manipulate the people around them to their own ends. Friendships are
generally based on understanding “what it’s like to have people be jealous of us,” but Cher’s
friendship with Tai has a different motive: changing her to validate her own existence. In
fact, Tai is even more removed from reality than Cher. She is proud of her sexual conquests
at fifteen years old, and is already into hard drugs. In fact, at the end of the movie she
rejects much of Cher’s world and chooses instead to be with a lazy, mildly-retarded drug
addict. This is the American microcosm; we’re supposed to be proud and feel touched by
this choice because she’s being “true to herself.”
This filmuses Todorov’s theory of equilibrium. At the beginning when Cher is introduced,
there is a sense of normality. This is the equilibrium. However as the filmprogresses there is
Ref:5
7. a disruption to the equilibrium when an agent of change is introduced. This changes the
story and Cher’s character starts to become more interesting and the audience e gain
sympathy for her. Shortly after equilibrium is finally restored and she becomes friends with
everyone again and even lands herself a boyfriend
