Reduced glass containing high concentration of 100% ferrous cations of total iron content was easily obtained by melting a solid–solid mixture without the need of a controlled gas atmosphere. The procedure focused on melting a mixture of a glass and an organic hydrocarbon, namely C6H12O6–1H2O. The present procedure also facilitated the precipitation of ferrimagnetic magnetite phase within the glass matrix without the need of a special heat treatment routine while preserving the original batch morphology.
