2. Aims and Objectives
• What is wind energy?
• The origin of wind energy.
• How is wind energy generated.
• The advantages and disadvantages of wind energy.
• The uses of wind energy.
3. What is wind energy?
Wind is caused by huge convection currents in the Earth's atmosphere, driven by
heat energy from the Sun. This means as long as the sun shines, there will be
wind.
Wind energy is obtained by harnessing the wind with windmills or wind turbines.
4. The Origin of wind energy
The ancient Egyptians were the first people known to harness wind energy
and using it to power boats up and down the Nile River as far back as 5000
BC.
In the 17th century during the reign of King Sugar, wind power was introduced
on a number of plantations as an energy resource to power the mills.
In 1887 of July, Glascow of Scotland, the Strathclyde University’s professor,
James Blyth created the first windmill that powered 408 batteries and during
winter professor Charles F. Brush builds a wind turbine which had a rotor
diameter of 50m 144 blades.
5. How is wind
energy generated
Wind turbine
Wind turbines operates on
a simple principle.
The energy from the wind
turns two or three
propeller-like blades
around a rotor. The rotor is
connected to the main
shaft which spins a
generator to create
electricity.
6. Wind turbines can
produce electricity
for a single home or
building, or can be
connected to and
electricity grid for
more wide spread
electricity
distribution.
