Editor's Notes
The history: Establishment of Deaf organizations in Finland. Since there is quite a lot of material on this subject in Finland, this can be gone through with variety of ways: Filmed lectures by FAD Deaf club, readings on the topic or a guest lecturer. FAD videos and books on the history of the Finnish Deaf, especially Salmi & Laakso 2005. (pages 58 - 143, 476 - 487)
Deaf clubs in Finland, option 1. After reading about Deaf clubs in Finland and their roles in the community (in the past and at the moment), the students will either go and visit a local Deaf club in pairs or interview a Deaf person about his/her perception of Deaf clubs. The students will work on the questions in the class together in order to come up with relevant questions on the topic. The aim is to find out how different Deaf people find Deaf clubs nowadays. The students will come together and present their findings to other. The findings will be reflected to the findings of a current Finnish research on young Deaf adults and their view on the Deaf community (Luukka 2008). Instructions for the interviews and selected sections (quotes) from Luukka’s PhD research on Deaf young adults.
Working with the video documents on two different kind of Deaf clubs: A youth club Tammersign (produced and filmed by Jarkko Keränen 2011) and A Deaf club in Kalajokilaakso (produced and filmed by Henna Syrjälä. These two Deaf clubs offer an interesting view on Deaf clubs changing in time (relevant to the discussion whether Deaf clubs are a thing of the past) . Two video documentaries (DVD or online environment). Tammersign has also a lots of material online in YouTube that are worth checking with the students. Some of them are subtitled.
