Most of us know what a reflex is. It's an automatic movement that does not require conscious thought and is a response to something in one's environment. The patellar or "knee-jerk" reflex is a classic example that we've all seen. The doctor hits the patellar tendon below the knee and the leg automatically kicks forward. This reflex helps the body maintain balance and posture. All reflexes have a physical and neurological purpose. Primitive reflexes are reflexes present at birth. We are all born with them. The difference with these reflexes is they eventually integrate into the nervous system as the baby grows and develops, meaning they are no longer observable. Most of these reflexes go away within the first year of life. In this mini course, we will be discussing and learning about 7 specific primitive reflexes that are important for development.
