1. In Spain the families have dinner together on Christmas Eve.
The typical dinner would consist of prawns , roasted lamb and Christmas
sweets: nougat and polvorones. The typical drinks is cava (catalan
champagne).
2. Christmas day is a national holiday in Spain so so shops are closed.
Another large family meal at lunchtime is common.
3. This is the day of Santos Inocentes and is similar to April Fools´ Day
when people play practival jokes on one another. Often the national
media will include a nonsense story in their broadcasts.
4. New Year´s Eve is known as NocheVieja. It is a big celebration all
over the country with street parties and special nights in hotels and
clubs everywhere. Until midnight people tend to stay at home and at
midnight it is traditional to eat 12 grapes, one each for each stroke
of the clock to bring good luck for the new year.
5. Another public holiday with plenty of people sleeping off their
excesses. It is also tradicional to have a family lunch.
6. One this day we celebrate that three kings: Baltasar, Gaspar and
Melchior arrived in Bethlehem twelve days after the birth of Jesus
bearing their famous gifts of gold, and frankincense and myrrh. For
Spanish children this is the most important day of the year because they
get their presents.
7. We put up decorations in our homes and streets two or three weeks before
Christimas.The most popular decorations are the tree and the nativity
scenes.
