Charles Lazarus initially started a baby furniture shop in 1948. As more and more requests came for toys and He was passionate about toys. So He went against the conventional thinking of broadening the business base. His strategy was to narrow the focus (to toys) and to stock in bulk, buy cheap, sell cheap as well. He really capitalized on the past world war baby boom era. 22% of the toys in US homes are from TOYS R US. To-date there are more than 700 stores in the US and another 700 over stores in many other countries.
Yet we can normally walk under the sun’s energy without any protection. Laser beams are used for making holes in diamonds, cutting stones and metals, steel etc. They are used to shoot shoot rockets into the space. Used to perform surgeries, cut away the cancer cells.
Steve jobs: "Apple is a $30 billion company, yet we've got less than 30 major products. I don't know if that's ever been done before. Certainly the great consumer electronics companies of the past had thousands of products. "I'm actually as proud of many of the things we haven't done as the things we have done. The clearest example was when we were pressured for years to do a PDA, and I realized one day that 90% of the people who use a PDA only take information out of it on the road. They don't put information into it. Pretty soon cellphones are going to do that, so the PDA market's going to get reduced to a fraction of its current size, and it won't really be sustainable. So we decided not to get into it. If we had gotten into it, we wouldn't have had the resources to do the iPod. We probably wouldn't have seen it coming.“ His secret behind success is “Focus….Focus…Focus”
Jesus was only 12 years old….Even at this age He was. He knew what He must be doing.
Paul was able to move forward with a tremendous energy because He had goals.
Specific: Your goals must be specific. I want to change the world. I want to be successful in my career, I want to be a better person..I want to be more spiritual…I want to be happy. What do you mean by that. I will clear my credit card debt by June 2010. That’s a goal. “I will not lose the temper at home” That’s a goal “ I want to lower my cholestrol by this much” If you have unclear goals, you are shaddowboxing. If you aim at nothing, you are going to get nothing. If you have unclear goals..they are almost imposible to achieve. Yes you want to be happy…But you must define what success means to you..what happiness means to you. Otherwise you will not know if you have achieved happiness or not..success or not. What do you want to happen in your life in the next 12 months…so that you can say “I am successful” The point is “If your goal is not specific..how will you know what to pray” Dr Cho says “God only answers specific prayers” “Oh God just bless me” it’s not clear enough” The Bible says “Ask…seek…knock” You got to know what to ask..seek and knock. If you don’t know your destination..how will you know if you have arrived. M- Measurable: You got to be able to measure it. You must be able to observe it, quanitfy it. I want to lower the cholestrol level this year by how much. 10%, 20% quantify it. You want to pray more, how much more, 5 min more…1 hour more everyday…? read the bible more..how much more. If you can’t measure your goal, how are you going to measure your progress..? “ I want to improve my health by exercising 1 hr a day, 3 times a week” Immediately you can measure that. 1 hour – 3times week. “I want to earn $5000 a month by the end of Dec 2010” you can measure it..how much 5000. I want to read the New testament in 6 months. A-Action Plan: “My goal is to lose 12 kilos in the year 2010” great goal – What action plans do you have for that. 12 kilos in 12 months..that means 1 kilo every month. So you have an action plan. “I am going to exercise 3 times a week / 1 hr a day” once a week play badminton, from now till dec no late night supper, skip one meal a day. No more high sugar, high cholestrol food. Write down. Can you win this..? Can you build your career..? Your spiritual life..? In the way you want it. Sit down and set some action plan. R- Realistic: Dreams are to do with things of which you have no control. But goals on the other side are something you can control. By end 2010 “ I will earn a million dollar” When setting goals you got to ask yourself. Is the goal realistic..? Can it be attained…is it doable..? Time –conscious: When must your goal be reached. I want to be rich someday…but when it is..? I want to finish reading the Bible someday..? I want to pray for an hour someday..? But when it is. Someday..not after we die. Paul “I have finished” My goal is to be a billionaire in 5 years…can you be a millionaire first in one year.
E-Expectation Management: You need to learn to manage your expectation. Be flexible. “Fools refuse to give up even when they know they are wrong” We are not perfect…sometimes we need to make adjustments
R_Revelation: The question is not just “what am I here for..?” It is whom am I here for. Peter “To whom shall we go..” You need revelation is very important. That’s why we pray.. We cannot do everything in the world..we need to know what God has planned for us. That’s why revelation is important. In 2010 God has only given us time just enough to do his perfect will.
Our science-based civilization has given us many benefits but it has multiplied our distractions and so taken away far more than it has given.... The remedy for distractions is the same now as it was in earlier and simpler times, viz., prayer, meditation and the cultivation of the inner life. The psalmist said "Be still, and know," and Christ told us to enter into our closet, shut the door and pray unto the Father.
Hp was a world leader in printing business for 6 years. Their printing business alone brought about 4 Billion US$ net profit in a year. By 1998, it became 11 th largest company in the US, earning a revenue of 18Billion US$ per year...there is nothing that it cannot do. With the success it has achieved, HP got distracted and started to do everything. They lost the focus and started thinking that it will do everything. “All things to all people” Digital camera to compete with cannon, nikkon, sony. PC business to compete with Dell. Higher end corporate business computing to compete with IBM. Even came with its own MP3 player to compete with Apple’s ipod. Started to diversify so rapidly. By 2004% HP stock was down 50%. Apart from it’s printing business in what it was good at, all other products, computers, cameras, mp-3s brought in zero – no profit what so ever. In 2005 hp fired the CEO and it took 2 years for hp to come back to some financial health. All their business didn’t earn anything. Why? They got distracted. What does it mean..? When you start to have small successes in your life…don’t get distracted, don’t lose focus! Stay focused!!
Ussain Bolt's world record-breaking time wasn't the only remarkable thing about the 200 metre final. Churandy Martina and Wallace Spearmon, who crossed the finish line second and third after Bolt, have now both been disqualified and stripped of their medals for stepping out of their lanes during the race. What happened – normally in 100, 200 meters race, the athletes' finish shoulder to shoulder. But Usasain Bolt ran so far ahead beyound what they can imagine. They got so distracted and stepped into another lanes. Spearmon's US teammates, fourth and fifth place finishers Shawn Crawford and Wlater Dix, have been awarded the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In 1994 a small silicon valley company invented a software called “Netscape Navigator” . It opened up the internet to the whole world. When netscape became available first, it was a big deal. Immediately we could browse the web. Netscape opened the way and captured the world’s imagination of internet age. It became so successful and within 16 months, less than 1 ½ years, it went on IPO. It was the biggest thing in the world and netscape launced the dot com era. But what happened, they got distracted by competition. Microsoft came up with Internet explorer in their windows operating system. Netscape was so upset with microsfot and bill gates, it said “we’re going to sue microsoft” “bring to court” and destroy microsoft as a company. In stead of focusing how to become better, they became bitter. So many people..in stead of becoming better. In early 1999, in the midst of a bitter court case with microsoft, netsape as a company got exhausted and depleted of all its resource and all its strength. Eventually they went bankrupt and was sold to AOL. Finally after few years AOL decided to kill netscpe totally altogether. As Christians we got to be wise…we shouldn’t get envious, jelous or obsessed with competition.
No matter what
Purpose and your vision brings both joy and pain. When you have a great vision, it brings you joy. But there is a price to pay for it. Nothing in life comes for free. If someone wants to be a champion athelete, you pay the price of training. If you want big returns in company, pay the price of taking risk. Before you can reap, there must be a season of sowing. Sowing is painful. A pregnant mother…because of the joy she goes through the pain. “No pain…no gain”
None of us want to show a poor performance in the marketplace. We want to be successful. As the Bible says “Men may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven” Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men. truly competent , skilled, efficient, diligent
