2. ICW#15: THINKING ABOUT THE DIGITAL DIVIDES
IN WHAT AND HOW WE TEACH
• Goal: to develop a way that we can look at our
teaching (or how we would suggest that others
teach) and try to minimize issues related to the digital
divide
• You will create a guide for teachers to think about
addressing the digital divide issues in a specific
context. You can work in groups or individually.
EDUC W200 Week 15
3. ICW #15, STEP 1 – PICK A SCENARIO
• You will do the following
o Pick a scenario from the next slide
o Think about the context of the technology integration
practice

4. SCENARIOS
• Scenario #1
A class in an urban/rural setting Indiana (you choose). Due to their location,
the school does not have adequate technical resources. Some parents
have voiced their concern that their students are falling behind.
• Scenario #2
Your school has equal representation of boys and girls. However, you have
noticed that several of the girls are not participating during computer time.
The boys in their group tend to take over the computer.
• Scenario #3
Your school is situated in an ethnically diverse area (students from black,
Latino, and Asian backgrounds). You notice that they tend to use
technology very differently from their classmates.

5. ICW #15, STEP 2 – CREATE THE GUIDE
• Create a presentation that speaks to teachers in your building.
• Give the teachers a structure for finding and solving potential
problems that could affect or be affected by digital divides.
• You will briefly define the digital divides, and provide
resources that they can use to learn more ( with links)
• You will offer to teachers things to look for in their own
teaching, lessons, and such that they can do to avoid things
that increase digital divides, or things to decrease differences
based on income, gender, race, etc
• This should be really practical – what can teachers do about it?

6. ICW #15, STEP 2 – TOOL TO BE USED
• Use SMART Notebook (installed in Ed2025)
o When you finish creating the guide, you will save and submit
this to Oncourse Assignments (ICW#15)
o And if we have time, we will have your group show your
guide at the SMART Board in class!
Note: There is a free version of the software we use to create
presentations for the SMART Board called Smart Notebook express. It is
web based, so you can use it anywhere (or you can download your
notebook on your personal computers)

7. ICW# 15, STEP 3 – TURN IT IN!
• Oncourse Assignments>>ICW #15
o Attach and submit your SMART Notebook file
• On your e-Portfolio -> NETS-T page
o Attach your SMART Notebook file to that page
o You will use this as an evidence for NETS-T 4b
