Start By:
a. Remove the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter -
Remove".
NOTICE
When a torque converter or divider has a failure, the complete oil
system for the torque converter, torque divider and transmission must
be throughly cleaned. Any foreign material which is not removed from
the oil system for the torque converter will move through the hydraulic
system for the transmission.

1. Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining ring (1) from the shaft.
2. Remove planetary carrier (2). The weight of planetary carrier (2) is approximately 23 kg
(51 lb).
3. Remove spacer (4) and spiral ring (3) from the planetary carrier.

4. Use a hammer and a punch to push the pins in shafts (5) and remove the shaft.
5. Remove washers (6) and (8) and gears (7).
6. Remove bearings (9) from the gear.
7. Remove the pins from the shafts.
8. Remove the bolt, retainer (10), and the O-ring seal.
9. Remove yoke (11) from the housing.

10. Remove bolts (12) and retainer (13) from the torque converter.
11. Remove O-ring seals (14) and (15) from the retainer. Remove the magnetic pickup sensor.
12. Remove lip seal (16) from the retainer.

13. Slide shaft assembly (17) out of the torque converter far enough in order to fasten a suitable
lifting device to the shaft assembly. Remove the shaft assembly. The weight of shaft
assembly (17) is approximately 23 kg (51 lb).
14. Remove seal ring (18) from the seal carrier.
15. Put the shaft assembly in position in a suitable press, and remove seal carrier (19) and
bearing (20).

16. Remove bearing race (21) from the shaft, if necessary.
17. Put the torque converter in position.
18. Remove bolts (22) that hold case (23) to the torque converter.

19. Install Tooling (B) in the cover. Install Tooling (C), and remove case (23). The weight of
case (23) is approximately 104 kg (229 lb).
20. Remove O-ring seals (24) from the support. Remove bolts (25) that secure support (26).
21. Use Tooling (D) in order to remove support (26). Remove support (26) from the torque
converter.

Note: Do not remove plate (27) unless the support is being replaced.
22. Remove plate (27) from the support.
23. Remove bolts (28).
24. Install Tooling (B) on the carrier. Use Tooling (D), in order to remove flange assembly (29).
The weight of flange assembly (29) is approximately 54 kg (119 lb).

25. Remove bolts (31) that hold sleeve (30) in place. Install Tooling (B) in the threaded holes.
Remove sleeve (30).
26. Remove flange assembly (29) from the impeller.
27. Remove bearing cup (32) from the flange.

28. Install Tooling (B), and remove impeller (33) from the carrier assembly.
29. Remove seal ring (34) from the seal carrier.
30. Remove spiral retainer ring (35) from the carrier.
31. Raise the temperature of the carrier and stator (36) to a maximum temperature of 149 deg C
(300 deg F).

32. Remove stator (36) from the carrier.
33. Remove spiral ring (37) and hub (38) from the carrier.
34. Remove seal carrier (39) and bearing cone (40).

NOTICE
Setscrew (41) must be removed from the spanner nut before the nut is
loosened.
35. Remove setscrew (41) from nut (42).
36. Make an alignment of the holes in the flange assembly with bolts (43), and remove the
bolts. Repeat in order to remove all six bolts.
37. Install the two spacers 3/8 inch I.D. by 3/4 inch O.D. by 1 inch long. Install two 0S-1571
3/8 inch - 16 NC by 1 3/4 inch bolts. The bolts hold the flange assembly in place when the
nut is removed.
38. Put Tooling (E) in place. Install two 5/16 inch - 18 NC by 1 inch long bolts in order to hold
Tooling (C) to the nut. Remove nut (44) and the washer.

39. Remove turbine assembly (45) from the housing.
40. Remove the bolts that hold the impeller to the hub.
41. Install Tooling (B) in turbine assembly (45) and remove turbine assembly (45) from hub
(46).

42. Install Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to housing (47). Remove the housing from
flange assembly (48). The weight of flange assembly (48) is approximately 57 kg (126 lb).
43. Remove seal ring (49) from carrier (50).
44. Hammer pins (51) down with a punch. Remove ring (52) and the ring gear from the flange.
Note: Clean and inspect ring (52) for serviceability.

45. Install Tooling (D), and remove bearing race (53) and the seal carrier.
46. Use Tooling (F) to remove bearings (54) if replacements must be made. Tooling (F) is not
shown.
47. Remove bearing race (55) from the housing.

48. Remove the bolts and retainer (56) from the torque converter housing.
49. Remove ring (56A) from the torque converter housing.
50. Remove bearing (57).

NOTICE
When a torque converter or divider has a failure, the complete oil
system for the torque converter, torque divider and transmission must
be throughly cleaned. Any foreign material which is not removed from
the oil system for the torque converter will move through the hydraulic
system for the transmission.
1. Inspect all parts for wear or damage. All parts that show wear or damage must be replaced.

2. Lower the temperature of bearing (57) and install the bearing in the housing.
3. Install ring (56A). Install the top bearing race and bearing retainer (56) in the torque
converter housing. Install the bolts that hold the retainer in place. Tighten the bolts to a
torque of 50 ± 7 N·m (37 ± 5 lb ft).

4. Install bearings (58) in flange (59) with Tooling (B) and press. Dimension (X) must be
19 ± 0.5 mm (0.75 ± 0.02 inch). Dimension (Y) must be 100 ± 0.5 mm (3.94 ± 0.02 inch).
5. The inside diameter of the bearings must be 72.878 ± 0.05 mm (2.869 ± 0.002 inch).
6. Raise the temperature of carrier (50) and bearing race (60) . Install the carrier and the
bearing race on the flange.
7. Put ring (52) in position in the groove of flange assembly (48).

Note: Clean and inspect ring gear (61) for serviceability prior to installation.
8. Install ring gear (61) on the flange assembly. The ring gear (61) must be in alignment with
the groove in the ring gear. Install the two pins that hold the ring in place. Install seal ring
(49) on the carrier (50).
9. Install Tooling (B) on the housing. Lower the housing on flange assembly (48). The weight
of housing (47) is approximately 57 kg (126 lb).

10. Install bearing race (63).
11. Install Tooling (E) in hub (46). Place hub (46) in turbine assembly (45).
12. Use a suitable press and Tooling (A) to install hub (46) in turbine assembly (45). Install the
bolts that hold the turbine to the hub. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 120 ± 15 N·m
(90 ± 11 lb ft).
