Do Americans speak a different kind of English from the British?
Presented by : Paula,
Julia, Vicky and
Back to XVI AND XVII
• In 1607 group of English people sailed across the
Atlantic where they reached the east coast of America.
They called the part of the country Virgina
• The first English arrived in North Carolina in 1585 and
1587.
• The first Europeans that arrived in America were the
Spanish in 1565 , they even lived in Florida.
• In 1620 more English arrived in North Virgina, in what
become the new England, their ship called the
Mayflower.
• In 1619, sailors from England and other countries from
Europe were taking Africans as slaves.
The goverment
• The government send britsh
prisoners to America as punishment
This was the
new England
Population
• 1900, there were 75 million people living in
America .
• In the XX, peolple from Asia and Spanish
–speaking countries arrived.
• By 2000, there were 280 million people
living in America
• The English settlers named a lot of things in America like
animals and trees that they discovered.
• Sometimes they used English words to give names to
things.
• They also named thousand of places and rivers using
the native American language example (Mississippi,
Massachusetts and Potomac)
• In the 19 century, Spanish and the French controlled a
part of the country and they also named some places.
• French named Detroit, St Louis and Illinois.
• Spain named Los Angeles, san Francisco and Santa Fe.
• New York was the first new Amsterdam, until 1664, that
the English took the name Brooklyn
• Some English words of the 17 century survived in
the America English but are not used now in the
British.
• Example: fall, autumn, mad, angry and etc…
• Some of the pronunciation of the first settlers
didn’t change until now, for example: the r at the
end of words (ex: car), and before a consonant
(ex: hard).
• African Americans developed their own varieties
of English which are all known today as African-
American English or Black English (ex: jazz)
Nowadays
• In 1776, Americans wanted to be
separated from Britain in all ways, so, an
American English teacher called Noah
Webster created the American’s first
dictionary so that would show the british
that they didn’t need to copy them, they
were independent. That gave the
American English as good as British
English.
After all, what are the differences
between American and British
today ?
• As well as differences in pronunciation,
there are some small differences in
grammar and spelling, but the main
difference is in vocabulary .
• There are different expressions in
American and British English and different
words that talks about the same thing in
the two types of English (British and
American)
