3. The submarine CSS Hunley pictured above was used in the Civil War. It was not steam-powered, but man-powered. The long stick at the front carried a mine (mines wee also quite new technology), which they detached onto the USS Housatonic, making the Hunley the first naval submarine to sink an enemy ship. Sadly, right after attacking the Housatonic, the Hunley sank and the 9 aboard were killed. No one knows what happened.
4. Civil War Mines and “Torpedoes” Mines and “Torpedoes” (technically, torpedoes can be stationary mines) were also used by the Union and Confederate Navies.
5. What was the most important innovation during the Civil War?
6. clads Ironclads CSS Virginia USS Monitor The most important new thing from the Civil War is the ironclad. The Union would not have won the Battle of Vicksburg and many others without the help of ironclads. The battle of Hampton Roads was the first battle between two ironclads. It was between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia on March 9th , 1862 (used to be the USS Merrimac but salvaged and converted) and it showed that iron ships were superior and the age of wooden ships were over. The day before its battle with the Monitor, the Virginia destroyed three wooden ships with ease. These ironclads lead to the ships of today. The draw between the Monitor and Virginia also brought a need for new naval weapons.
