2. Quick summary in intro
Ali (the author) begins his essay with a quick
summary in the introduction paragraph.
He ends his intro paragraph with his thesis (this
is awesome).
3. Criteria
Although Ali's essay doesn't flat out state his
criteria. He takes some space to discuss his
criteria in his second paragraph.
This works for his essay but is not the way
we're going to approach criteria. Instead we'll
have a brief discussion of our criteria in our
intro paragraph.
4. Topic Sentences
Notice that from the third paragraph to the end,
Ali has the first sentence of every paragraph
say what the paragraph is about.
These are his topic sentences. These are
awesome.
5. Examples/Evidence
Ali uses plenty of examples/evidence from the
film.
He doesn't just use quotes, he also describes
the action in certain scenes to illustrate his
points.
6. More on examples/evidence
After each example/piece of evidence, Ali
further explains how the example/evidence
supports and illustrates his point that he initially
stated in the topic sentence.
This is really good. Ali is the greatest! (boxing
joke, yeah dude).
7. Outside Sources
Ali does a great job using outside sources in his
last 2 paragraphs before his conclusion.
But guess what?
You shouldn't do this!
Our evaluation essay will focus more on your
evaluation of your film, album, article, or short
story.
8. Reader objection's
Ali does consider reader objections, only he
does this with outside sources.
Remember, in our essay we're not going to use
outside sources. So you'll simply predict how a
reader would object to you.
Then you'll either accommodate them (say why
they make a good point) or refute them
(disprove them).
9. Conclusion
Ali's conclusion solidifies his thesis and is
strong.
Your conclusion can work in a similar fashion.
Just make sure you also state how and why
your text is or is not significant.
