This is a mouse tutorial brought to you by the Technology Learning Center
The mouse is a hand held device that lets you point to objects on the screen, click on them, and move them. There is a proper technique for holding a mouse
Since the mouse can be an intimidating topic we want to take a slower approach. This tutorial has been broken down into five parts to promote better understanding of basic use
Your thumb is on the desk or table, lightly resting on the left side of the mouse. Your pointer finger should rest on the left button of the mouse. Place your middle finger on the right button of the mouse. Your ring finger and pinkie should rest on the right side of the mouse.
Your palm should cup the mouse gently and your wrist should be resting on the desktop. Review the mouse – hand chart to correct your hand placement
Most computer programs depend upon the mouse. In order to use the mouse you will have to learn how to click.
First you will learn how to “click.”
When you click you are interacting with the computer. You are telling it what to do.
To move your mouse, simply slide the device around the table. You can drive the mouse in any direction.
Now lets move your mouse around the screen. Make sure to practice your single left click skills. You’ll notice a black circle on my screen to designate my left click.
A double click is when you quickly click the mouse button twice. This can be used to open files, folders, or start programs on you desktop.
The click will sound similar to the “knock knock” you might make on a door.
A right click is when you press the right mouse button. This type of click is used less often than your general left-click. A right click will provide you with extra options, ones you might not currently see on your screen.
Let’s try to open the calculator program on the desktop. I could single click to select the file, but I will double click to open it.
Now we can use the right click to provide us with options besides open.
The Drag and Drop is a motion you will want to work on perfecting. To drag a item you will hold down the left mouse button before moving it around the screen. Simply release the left mouse button to drop the item.
This method can be used to drag items like folders, files, and programs around your computer
Watch as I drag and drop our calculator - - - Now you try to move an item around your screen.
Don’t let the simplicity of this tutorial fool you. Learning to use the Mouse is THE most important part of your introduction to a computer.
