Personal Statement As a child living in the south it was easy to get distracted academically because of the common stereotypical behavior that implied that excelling in athletics would be the best opportunity to gain financial success for Black Americans. I was one of those individuals that had dreams of becoming a professional athlete. However; I realized that education would be the key to success rather than sports. Therefore, those ideas were relinquished during high school and I focused my attention towards my education. In high school my interest in how things evolved in the minds of individuals, their thought processes, and why people act in a specific manner, reinforced my interest and influenced me to study courses such as literature, philosophy and world history. I excelled in these courses and achieved honorary recognition, which rated me at the top of my class, so it was only logical that Psychology would be my career choice. I currently hold the position as Supervisor of Production for a major pharmaceutical organization. I currently supervise a total of 13 direct reports, all with enormous personalities and characteristics that create cultural challenges, in addition to the requirements to complete task operations associated within my initial job description. Nevertheless, I think I have gained valuable expertise in managing employees and executing task operations within cGMP guidelines. I think management has enabled me to develop, operate and maintain the skills and experience that are required to be efficient within my organizations corporate strategic plan. However, to be extremely efficient at my craft and achieve total success, additional education is essential. When I decided to continue my education and pursue a BA Degree, I researched numerous universities to find what they had to offer in the field of Psychology. Upon completion of these reviews and interacting with the university faculty members who assured me that Argosy has an immaculate Psychology program and their curriculum is among the highest in the nation, my decision to attend Argosy University was a clear choice. I do think Argosy has an excellent curriculum associated with Psychology. I have completed a full spectrum of Psychology courses over the years and all have assisted me in reinforcing my decision to major in Psychology. I have learned a lot about the different applications of Psychology, such as; how to analyze different concepts, viewpoints, perspectives, and ACA and APA Codes of Regulations that will be essential to my success in the Psychology field of study. Additionally, I studied courses in statistics, humanities, and philosphy, which I also give credit to for helping me analyze concepts in different perspectives, as well. I think majoring in psychology is more in line with my current occupation, Psychology enables me to interact and collaborate with individuals, while accepting and understanding diversity and the many different cultural differences that I encounter each day in the workplace and in society as a whole.

Reflection I chose to continue my education at Argosy University in 2008, basically, because of their impressive Psychology Curriculum. In doing so, I think that I have learned a great deal about the field of Psychology. I have taken numerous courses in psychology, which has enabled me to analyze the work of numerous credible Scientist, whom has made considerable contributions to the study of Psychology. Argosy’s curriculum in psychology has enable me to understand the differences that we face each day within our society ranging from ethics, diversity, cognitive, behavioral and socio-emotional. I have learned the use these psychological principles in my everyday decision –making within my family structure, workplace and society as a whole. My strengths are in the following areas, Cognition, where I excelled at systematically analyzing and appraising complex issues from different perspectives. Additionally, I have learned to collect and arrange factual data from reliable sources and implement that data into the psychology topic of study. Research is another area of strength that I find comfort, as I have been able to use sound reasoning when summarizing research designs, statistical and other evaluative tools. I understand the importance of effective communication both orally and written and have made enormous improvements in the areas of creating, organizing and delivering oral presentations, along with my ability to develop, apply and defend a particular stance related to psychological concepts in written work. Listing references in the correct APA format has been my biggest weakness and has been somewhat challenging, however, with the aid of my professors, I think that I have made vast improvement in these two areas over the years.
Cognitive Abilities: Critical Thinking and Information Literacy Cognitive Abilities By: Stephen Donaldson Advanced General Psychology Final Project Stephen Donaldson Argosy University June 10, 2010 “Abstract” In this week assignment I will demonstrate a complete understanding of the required reading material from module five, which reference Outreach Programs and Available Resources. In addition, I will analyze my viewpoints on the importance of healthcare and outreach programs within the community, which are designed to provide numerous forms of assistance to low income women that suffer from drug addiction, sexual health, gender roles differences related gay and lesbian issues, domestic violence and sexual abuse. Course Outreach Program Resources Course Description This outline is designed to provide credible outreach program resources for the female gender identity, which will enable them to seek professional assistance in the area associated with Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse. Course Description What is Domestic Violence? Defining Domestic Violence Statistical Data of Women Impacted Understanding the implications of Domestic Violence and abuse on the body: Psychological Effects/ Mental Effects Physical Effects Long/ Short Term Effects
Cognitive Abilities: Critical Thinking and Information Literacy Treatment Options: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Behavioral Couple’s Therapy Outreach Centers/ shelters Outreach Program Resources: State and local Government School Administration Local Law Officials ( Police/ Sheriff Department) Local Health Department Domestic violence is defined as the willful intimidation, assault, battery, sexual assault or other abusive behavior perpetrated by one family member, household member, or intimate partner against another individual. “The purpose of the Commission is to increase safety for victims of domestic violence and their children and for victims of sexual assault and to hold abusers accountable for their violent behavior” U.S. Department of Justice, 2005). In the United States, domestic violence and drug abuse were listed as the leading violent/ criminal activity against the female gender role. “According to the Surgeon General’s office, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 to 44 years of age. Additionally, 92 percent of all domestic violence incidents, crimes are committed by men against women” (U.S. Department of Justice, 2004). “According to Poole et al, A large percentage of eligible participants reported using alcohol (48.9%), nicotine (83.2%), cocaine/crack (54.1%), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) antidepressants (43.8%) three times a month or more. Lesser used substances were hallucinogens (7.3%), opiates (13.9%), and other stimulants (18.3%). More than 20% of eligible participants reported having used alcohol, minor tranquilizers, nicotine, cannabis, and/or cocaine/crack for more than 5 years” (Poole, 2008). Women living in the United States, as statistics show above are victims of numerous forms of abuse ranging from domestic violence, sexual abuse, discrimination, substance abuse and sexual orientation issues that result in gay and lesbian bashing. Women who suffer from these acts of domestic violence and substance abuse often feel as though they are trapped and helpless, which results in a continuous cycle of abuse. “Domestic violence victims are often exposed repeatedly to threats, violence, intimidation, and physical, emotional and psychological abuse. Constant, repeated exposure to violence has a profound effect on a victim's daily activities and functioning, thinking, interpersonal relationships, and sense of self. Some victims, because of the chronic nature of the violence, may develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, a mental health disorder characterized by flashbacks, significant anxiety, depression and fatigue” (Benson, 2004).
Cognitive Abilities: Critical Thinking and Information Literacy Other physical and or mental reactions a domestic violence survivor may experience include symptoms such as: Fear; Nightmares and sleep disturbances; Anxiety; Anger; Difficulty concentrating; Depression; Low self-esteem; Shame and embarrassment; Chronic physical complaints; Substance abuse; Social withdrawal; Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness; Self-blame; Numbness; and Hyper vigilance (inability to relax, jumpiness Treatment options that have proven to be effective in the areas associated with domestic violence and substance are listed as follows; “Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been demonstrated to be effective across a range of substance use and mental health disorders, and has recently been adapted to treat co-occurring substance use and intimate partner violence” (Easton, 2008) “Behavioral Couple’s Therapy (BCT), which teaches couples techniques to reduce conflict and improve relationship functioning, has been demonstrated to be effective in several populations” (Easton, 2008). I think an outreach program will provide victims the outlets they required to recover from the physical and emotional stressors of domestic violence and abuses. In addition, as too many overtures within the public spectrum, confidentiality, education, and medical assistance both physically and psychologically will be key initiatives in determining the success of the program. Additionally, effective agendas that emphasize strong reinforcement strategies/ programs that build resilience, self esteem, provide shelter and psychological treatment for women, local police, sheriff’s office, town hall, school system that will report any incidents to the proper authorities and the citizen that resides in the community will play a key role into the success of the outreach program as well.

Research Skills Research Skills By: Stephen Donaldson Case Study Stephen Donaldson Ethics in Contemporary Society Thesis Statement In this week assignment, I will demonstrate a complete understanding of the required reading material. In addition, I will analyze the facts, and ethical viewpoints of the events that lead to the Virginia Tech shooting, which has be labeled as the worst shootings to ever occur in any school system in the United States. Summary of Facts On the morning of April 16, 2007, for reasons unknown, 23 year old South Korean born, Seung Hui Cho committed the worst mass shooting ever recorded in United States history. Seung Hui Cho moved to the United States at and early age (8 years of age) and was a senior (English Major) at the university of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg VA. He had no prior convictions of violence. However, he had been investigated by campus police for complaints associated with stalking, which yielded no criminal charges. Seung Hui Cho was described by his professors and classmates as a quite individual, a loner so to speak, with atypical writing skills. They concluded that they were often disturbed by some of Cho’s writings but had no idea of the level of his mental state, which ultimately resulted in the violent murder of their fellow colleagues/ classmates. Seung, equipped with two handguns (9mm pistol, and .22 caliber pistol) orchestrated, planned and carried out these premeditated murders by purchasing the guns and ammunition at a local gun store, locking and chaining the doors so that individuals could not enter from the outside and those inside could not exit the building. Once this action was secured, he proceeded to violently shot and killed 33 students and faculty members, wounding 15 others in the process before committing suicide. In the aftermath of this tragedy, questions of inadequate security, inexperienced personnel, and inadequate response times, ineffective and withheld communication are being reevaluated by federal and state officials, in efforts to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future. Nevertheless, parents and students have expressed immediate concern for the safety and well being of their loved ones as well as themselves in the public school system not only at Virginia Tech University, but in universities and high schools across the nation in a whole. Ironically, this mass shooting murder suicide event occurred within four days from the eight year anniversary of a related event that resulted in the death of 13 high school students at Columbine High School in Littleton Colorado. In this event of murder suicide, two students armed themselves with military style rifles, entered the high school and maliciously attacked students and staff members. (13 killed).
Research Skills Ethical Issues Should we allow guns in our society? Should we abolish the Second Amendment? Should the government assume control over public institutions such as schools and universities to ensure the safety and well being of those attending these facilities? Should we (United States) revised the laws associated with possession of firearms, such as those in foreign countries, which will reduce the level and amount of violence inflected on our nation from firearm usage? Should we revise our Homeland Security Act/ policy? Should the University be held responsible for the students who were murdered on their campus? My positions The United States of America, the home of the brave, the land of the free has been our creed for centuries and centuries over. As the citizens of the United States pay their taxes, vote for public office, work nine to five jobs and establish a lifestyle that enables us to raise a functional family structure, we send our love ones off to school without the thought of violence to a degree that may cause severe injury or fatality to our children. In our society, we are a nation with laws that are designed to protect the innocent from harm both physically and emotionally. However, in the last twenty years violence in our educational system/ classrooms has excelled, reaching new heights in both public and private school system, which has resulted in some of the worst recorded shooting events in American history. These acts of violence are a violation of the law associated with the right for everyone to receive a basic education in the United States, which is clearly defined in the universal declaration of rights proclaimed by the general assembly article 3- “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person” (Brannigan, 2004). I think the United States, whether government or independently operated should be entrusted with the moral and ethical responsibility to ensure the safety and well being of all students attending classrooms in both public and private schools and universities operating in the United States. I think more should be done to protect students in the schools and universities, which may include adding metal detectors on all campus entrances such as; parking lots, buildings, cafeterias and dorms. Furthermore, if the schools and universities can apply additional security measures during sports events; this implies that they are capable of providing the same security measures during educational hours. “Placing cameras throughout a campus is an option, which would allow university personnel to see, and possibly videotape, movements of anyone within the camera’s field of view” (Hanford,2008). In addition, “other means of communication include placing loudspeakers throughout a campus, having so-called zipper signs inside and outside of buildings, and having a two-way intercom system that would allow someone to speak to individuals in a classroom and allow those in the classroom to respond verbally” (Hanford,2008). The Virginia Tech shooting is one of the worst shootings in our nation history. It will serve as a reminder to us all, the damage one with psychological / societal issues can have if treatment is not detected and rendered. “Colleges need to do a better job of helping the students who need that aid, he says, adding that it’s a “sad commentary” on society that it can’t help individuals who need it, even when they don’t want the help” ( Hanford,2008).
Research Skills Opposing Position Individuals that oppose new security measures may argue that our school system is effective and does not need any addition security and or revisions to the current operations procedures. They may argue that such acts of violence like the Virginia Tech and Columbine shootings were isolated events, which resulted from individuals with Psychological/ societal issues. Therefore, school security increasing security would not have prevented the incident from occurring. According to Sako, “the shootings at Virginia Tech would have occurred no matter how much security they had because it involved dealing with individuals and that means dealing with societal problems” (Hanford, 2008). Second, there are not enough allotted funds for additional security equipment, training programs and additional headcounts to upgrade all the universities and schools across the nation. “According to an article from CNN, funding for high-tech school security was cut by 1/3 during the Bush administration” (Handouts, 2009). Third, parents need to do a better job at being accountable of their child’s actions, disciplining them, and detecting potential psychological issues prior to enrolling their children into the schools. Ethical Analyses #1 Aristotle and Virtue Ethics: I think Aristotle would access that all public and or private educational facilities should have the moral and ethical obligation / responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals that attend that facility. In the event of the Virginia Tech shooting, I think Aristotle would comment on the unethical treatment of the faculty and staff provided to ensure the safety of the students. Aristotle would probably address the efficiency and effectiveness of the security program. In addition, he would inquire about what revisions should be made to ensure that such an event did not re-occur. This may include holding discussion with administrators to implement revised security protocols to increase safety initiatives. I think the most significant outcome of this event maybe that it will enable schools and universities to revise their security program, which may reduce/ eliminate the possibility of such events to re-occur. However, the worst implies that no matter what levels of security you have in place, there is no security from an individual that has enacted murder and suicide as a means to an end. Ethical Analyses Two Kant and Duty Ethics: According to Kant, we as human have the ability to reason, which makes us rational. Kant also implies that this ability to reason is what makes us the more superior beings, far above those of any other creature. I think in this event Kant would be upset with the faculty’s method of reasoning. I think he would reference past related events of this magnitude and imply that these students were treated as a means to and end, by not having an innovative security system in place that ensured the safety and well-being of the students. In addition, I think Kant would analyze that this massacre of the student was unethical based on the way the security was handled. Kant may suggest that all security programs, and security equipment be revised to reduce the possibility of such repeated events. The strengths of Kant’s proposed plan would be to increases safety metrics for the students attending educational programs. The weakness associated with this program would be the lack of funds to revise the systems and trained or hire additional persons in these areas.
Research Skills Ethical Third Analyses: Mills and Moral ethics: “According to Mills, one's moral obligation is to act in such a way that the action will result in the greatest total amount of happiness for everyone involved” (Argosy, 2010). I think Mills would access that the university did not protect the student ethically, because they knew of a previous shooting event at the school but failed to notify the students of the possible danger associated with the shooting event. In addition, the university refused to lock down the school until the authorities investigated the shooting and released the school back to the university for normal school session. I think Mills would argue that the student’s ethical rights were violated in this area. Mills would argue that the actions of the faculty and administration did not serve the greatest total happiness for the university/ students/ professors. The strengths of this matter are that it allows revisions to be made with security all over the nation, which will ultimately serve the great good. The weakness is that in its simplest form, utilitarianism is merely of suggestion, a matter of adding up the good: pleasure or happiness, and subtracting the bad, pain or suffering. Unfortunately, in such events as these there is only pain and suffering. Conclusion: I think the strongest ethical perspective to be applied in the case of The Virginia Tech Massacre is the Kant’s Deontology. I think human dignity, reasoning and making rational decisions are key initiatives to achieving a productive society. The greatest weakness, is suicide, when an individual commits this activity, there are no systems in place that can bring justice to that individual, which leaves society to deal with the consequences of such Psychological emotional scares. Communication Skills: Oral and Written Communication Skills By Stephen Donaldson Outline Stephen Donaldson Argosy Rise of Modern Science Dr. Fei Wang February 21, 2010 Introduction: Galileo’s one of the world’s most innovative scientist/ mathematician was convicted for heresy by Inquisition by the Catholic Church for his work depicting that the sun was the center of the universe. A. Galileo was placed on trial by the 1633 Catholic Church. Some people think Galileo’s was treated unfairly by the Catholic Church. Other people think his treatment was an acceptable practice during that time period. Galileo pled guilty to heresy to escape torture and execution. Galileo was sentence to home confinement for the remaining days of his life. Galileo plea- bargained to save his life. Thesis Statement: The outline is designed to demonstrate a completely understanding of the condemnation of Galileo during the inquisition by the Catholic Church in 1633. I will provide the required supporting data referencing ethical and scientific assessments of Galileo’s work, which includes introducing a brief summary of the facts, stating ethical and scientific viewpoints of interest, what effects the inquisition had on his life, and why did accepted the verdict of guilty of heresy.
Communication Skills: Oral and Written Supporting/ Opposing Argument: Galileo was one of the most brilliant and innovative scientist / mathematicians in modern science today, which has placed controversial concerns about the inquisition of 1633. Was Galileo Condemnation by the Catholic Church Justified? A-Were Galileo’s actions in conflict with the church teachings? I- Galileo implied that the sun was the center of the universe. II- Pope Urban VI warned Galileo that his publications were in violation of the views of the church. Was it wise for Galileo to accept a plea-bargain from the Inquisition? A. Galileo did not accepted a plea-bargain because he was guilty. I. Galileo accepted the guilty plea bargain to escape torture and possible execution. II. Pope Urban VI wanted to imprison Galileo for life for the crime of heresy. 3. Was the punishment from the Inquisition too severe? Galileo was ordered to a lifetime of home confinement for being convicted of heresy. Was this too severe? I. Many think that Galileo was treated unjustly and his record should be clear from all criminal charges. II. Some critics think that the punishment was Galileo Received was appropriate for that time period. Conclusion: Galileo’s accomplishments in the scientific field of study were tarnished in the record books from the Inquisition by the Catholic Church in 1633. However, there are many that think Galileo received unjust treatment associated with being charged with any criminal activity, which has resulted in the public request all convictions in relation to the inquisition be overturned and expunged from his record, which will enable him to be recognized in history as one of the most notable scientist in modern scientific era. Ethics and Diversity Awareness Ethics & Diversity Awareness By Stephen Donaldson Asserting Perceptions of Diversity in Culture Stephen Donaldson Diversity PSY-312 Dr. Pamela Allen March 07, 2010 Asserting Perceptions of Diversity in Culture My cultural values, biases and beliefs work hand in hand to enable me to be an accepted member in our society. I think I was fortunate to be raise within a family structure that place strong emphasis on ethical treatment of all living things. The concept of treating others as you want to be treated was almost cited on a daily basis in my house. My parents were both Christians. Therefore, I was raise in a religious environment, which required me to attend church and give praise to God. However, I never proclaimed myself to be a religious person; attending church instilled the cultural values that I still practice today. These same cultural values enable me to understand the differences of right and wrong not only within my culture but in society as a whole. In addition, I think these values have enabled me to accept diversity among all people and nationalities. I am bias to any individual that has a closed mindset that prevents them from treating others ethically. I do not think any one individual should be valued above another individual for any reason; this includes social status, race, religion, and or culture. I believe in the almighty, that we are all created under his image and should be treated as equals. I believe in humanity, which separates us from those classifications that are unable to reason. I believe in unity, a society that will overcome all the prejudices and hatred in the world. I believe in hope, because without it all sense of achievement will be lost.
Ethics and Diversity Awareness Describe them in detail: and based on your life history, explain what you think are the origin of those values, biases, and beliefs. The values, beliefs and biases that I live by were instilled in me as a child, my parents and grandparents were religious (Baptist), they taught me to obey the laws within our society, to be obedient to my parents and to be respectful to people. These values were essentially the key to acceptance in our culture and the blueprint for being productive in society. “The first toward changing prejudicial or biased towards others is becoming aware of them.” (Argosy, 2010) My biases were based on direct interaction with society; living in the south brings you in contact with a high level of prejudices, which challenges everything that you were taught as a child. The concept of respecting everyone and everyone is treated equal in the eyes of God, almost seems like a falsehood and challenged my teachings as a child, basically, because I was too young to understand the concept of turning the other cheek. Therefore, I would consider myself as a bitter lost soul, confused with my teachings as a child and the rude awakening of what society truly had to offer. It was until I became older, that I was able to use these prejudices to my advantage. As an adult, I was able to understand that my actions were a representation of my parents. I learned to be a better person by not returning the prejudices that were generated to me by others and I soon began to drift back to my childhood teachings. The beliefs are of religious origin, I believe in the God, the teachings of the bible, that all men are created equal, honor thy father and mother so that thy days will be long. I think this acceptance allows me to understand and accept the different cultures, nationalities within our society. I embrace them and desire to learn more of the different cultures. I believe in Diversity, that it is necessary, because without the differences of people we would all be the same and there would be nothing to learn. Diversity brings interest, fascinations and curiosity, which enable us to learn and grow for others way of life. Foundation of Psychology Knowledge of Foundation of the field By: Stephen Donaldson Advanced general Psychology Outline of Literature Findings Stephen Donaldson PSY- 492 Argosy University Introduction: Racial Profiling is a form of racism consisting of the alleged policy of law enforcement officers who stop and search vehicles driven by persons belonging to particular race, minority and ethnic groups. A. Racial Profiling Statistical Data: Racial profiling in cities across the United States. Racial profiling cases in the court system Racial profiling ratio against the female and male gender identity. Impact of Racial Profiling on the human Anatomy: Physical Impact Psychological Impact Thesis Statement: The outline is designed to demonstrate a completely understanding of the impact racial profiling has on the male and female gender identity living within our communities. Additionally, I will provide a brief summary of the facts surrounding racial profiling and the impact this behavior has on the human body
Foundation of Psychology Supporting/ Opposing Argument: Racial Profiling has become one of the most popular violations of individuals civil rights. This form of racism is administered unethically and illegally on all races by law enforcement officers in the United States with the approval from their superiors. Is this an effort to control the activities of suspected terrorist, drug dealers, immigration violators residing within our society? Is racial profiling a violation of human civil rights? A- Should you have rights in the United States if you are not an American Citizen? I- What is the punishment for those convicted of racial profiling? II- Are terrorist, drug dealers and immigrants treated fail by government officials and law makers. Racial profiling exists within our communities and creates racial inequalities, by denying people of different cultures and ethnicity their privacy, identity, security and basic control over their daily activity. The intended purpose of racial profiling is centered on reducing the level of illegal immigrants, which experts say are destroying our economy, suspected terrorist who are creating safety concerns for the general public, and drug dealers who many think are responsible for corrupting the American way of life by introducing/ supplying illegal narcotics to society, which has lead Law enforcement officers in cities across the country to increased their activity of illegal search and seizure practices that target minority and ethnic groups. Nevertheless, Americans are overwhelmingly opposed in principle to a racially biased law enforcement policy. In the United States law enforcement officers illegally carry out these practices, which are designed to disrupt the activity of suspected terrorist, drug dealers, illegal immigrants living in our society. However, there is no permanent design that exempts the innocent population. Racial profiling causes physical and psychological impairments to those individuals that are unjustly targeted. Studies show that of those impacted by racial profiling 22 percent of Black Americans, 11 percent of Hispanic and 6 percent of Caucasians experienced physical violence while being detained by law enforcement officers. Additionally, the impact of racial profiling has been credited with causing emotional stress, anxiety, low self-esteem and high blood pressure to victims that have experience inappropriate behavior.
Foundation of Psychology “According to studies conducted by survey in 2005, Black Americans were 4 times more likely to be pulled over by police officers and Latinos/ Hispanics were pulled over at a rate of 1.4 times more than white residents. Another study conducted by Scot Wortley a member of the University of Toronto criminology department found that 40 percent of Black Americans between the age of 15 and 24 were stopped by police compared to 11 percent of white residents” (Wortley, 2005). In a another study, a significant numbers of Hispanics (23%) and blacks (37%), but almost no whites (1%), report being “treated unfairly” by police in their city specifically because of their race, and similar percentages of each group report being stopped by police solely because of their race” (Weitzer and Tuch, 2002). Ironically, in these findings it was discovered that men and women from poor genetically backgrounds are more likely to accept discrimination than those from stable and established backgrounds. According to a study by the USC-Caltech Center for the Study of Law and Politics, Men are more likely to tolerate discrimination than women, however both sexes tend to accept prejudice against poorly educated immigrants and Arab-American airplane travelers” (Petrocelli, 2006). In reference to the court system, Black Americans are treated worse than Caucasian citizens and receive maximum sentencing from crimes of similar nature. ”Racial profiling cases are hard to prosecute because law enforcement officers under the IV Amendment are permitted to stop any individual that is under suspicion of illegal activity. However, this permission is factual based, there is a huge discrepancy between fact, suspicion and probable cause, which gives those impacted less chance under the law to claim unfair treatment by police officers” (Petrocelli, 2006). “In the united States, the Supreme Court held that the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit investigatory stops as long as the facts and circumstances lead to a reasonable suspicion that the driver is engaged in criminal activity” (Pelic, 2003). Conclusion Racial profiling has the tendency to affect all citizens living in the United States and world as a whole. The American people think this practice of racism gives power to law enforcement officials to invade and violate not only individual’s privacy, but their civil rights, as well. In the act of justice and equality this is considered a step backwards and a clear indicator that America gas not fully embraced Diversity and racism, discrimination and prejudice is still prominent in the United States. Applied Psychology Knowledge of Applied Psychology By: Stephen Donaldson Advanced General Psychology PSY-492 Final Project Stephen Donaldson Argosy University June 04, 2010 “Abstract” In this week assignment I will demonstrate a complete understanding of the required reading material from module four, which references stress-management workshops for employed women. Additionally, I will build an outline that provides supporting documentation of the issues women endure in the home and workplace such as; overload, juggling employment, childcare, and other forms of care giving that are related to stressors of the female gender.
Applied Psychology Course Outline- Stress Management Workshop Course Description This outline is designed to provide women with stress related issues helpful information, activities and strategies that will reduce the stressors that women undergo at home and in the workplace. Course Description What is stress? Defining Stress What individuals are impacted by stress Statistics of stress in the united States Understanding the effects of stress on the human body How does stress effect the human body What are the physical and psychological effects in men What are the physical and psychological effects in women Learning and Identifying stress in the Workplace Environmental Issues Social Issues Psychological Issues Perception Identify and Practice stress management reductions Find someone to communicate with about concerns Set obtainable goals for achievement Take personal time to for yourself to relax Take care of your personal health
Applied Psychology Stress is defined as a physical, mental, or emotional response to events that cause bodily or mental tension. Simply put, stress is any outside force or event that has an effect on our body and mind” (Argosy, 2010). “All workers experience job-related stress, regardless of gender, race, and or age, as a result of tedium, deadlines, safety issues, and an unpredictable economy, workers feel pressurized and insecure” (Argosy, 2010). In the United States stress affects millions of individuals and often create long term health issues that if not treatment efficiently can have both physical and psychological impairments. “Studies indicate that stress has been linked to the 6 leading causes of death ranging from: heart disease, cancer, lung aliments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide. Additionally, 43 percent, of adults have adverse health effects from stress related illnesses, 75 to 90 percents of visit to the physician’s office are for stress related conditions and complaints” (Stoppler, 2006) However, with the emergence of numerous neutralizers such and psychological and physical treatment methods and stress management workshops, individuals are able to reduce and endure the impact of stress related illnesses more tolerably. Stress effects the human body in many ways, the long term health issues associated with the male gender versus the long term health issues of the female gender have different impacts on the human body, both physically and mentally. Stress affects the male gender physically by causing impairments as follows; Weight loss, high blood pressure, fatigue, chest pains, headaches, dizziness, and psychologically by causing depression, withdrawal or isolation, mood swings, insomnia, increases smoking, insecurity, and decreased productivity. In the female gender role stress affects the body physically as follows; absence of menstruation, abnormal bleeding, fibroid tumors, and endometriosis, heart disease, high blood pressure, and sexual dysfunctions. The psychological impairments include, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. “In the long term, females caregivers face health related consequences because of stress, including poor self-care, lack of fitness, and other hazards, which may compromise their later years, leaving them vulnerable to chronic illnesses” ( Argosy, 2010). In the event that an individual feels that they are becoming victims of stress, there are numerous anti-stress related activities that can be utilized to lower stress such as interacting with a friend or family member about the issues in ones life that are becoming stressful, set obtainable goals and objectives that will allow you to achieve self- satisfaction both at home and in the workplace, allow yourself not to get wrapped up into the demands of the day, set time aside for yourself for relaxation and recharging your physical and mental capacity, and take dare of your personal health by eating, sleeping and scheduling regular check ups with your primary physician. • 2.
