God bless you as you examine His Word,
Your servant in Christ, 2Cor. 4:5
These Microsoft PowerPoint presentations are provided "for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ"
(Ephesians 4:12-15). To help Christians to "to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ." So that "we are no longer...tossed here and
there...by every wind of doctrine." They may be downloaded and modified free of charge.
Matthew 10:8 âŚFreely you received, freely give.
3. Luke 7:1
After The Sermon On The Mount
⢠NAU Luke 7:1 When He had completed all His discourse in
the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.
⢠Remember the "Sermon On The Mount" or the "Sermon
On The Flatâ from NAU Luke 6:17 Jesus came down with
them and stood on a level place?âŚ
⢠NAU Matthew 8:1 When Jesus came down from the
mountain⌠8:5 And when Jesus entered Capernaum, a
centurion came to Him, imploring Him,
⢠To me, this proves that the sermon on the Mount is in
Luke chapter 6, in condensed form.
3
4. Luke 7:2, Centurion's Slave
⢠NAU Luke 7:2 And a centurion's slave [doulos], who was highly
regarded by him, was sick and about to die.
⢠<1401> Î´ÎżáżŚÎťÎżĎ doulos, Meaning: a slaveâŚUsage: bond-servantâŚ
⢠Verse seven we can little more insight to the compassion of the
Centurion, it is his "child, or boy";
⢠NAU Luke 7:7 for this reason I did not even consider myself
worthy to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant
[pais] will be healed.
⢠<3816> ĎÎąáżĎ pais, Meaning: a child, boy, youthâŚ.
4
6. Luke 7:2, Centurion's Slave
⢠Three centurions are commended in the New Testament for their
faith;
⢠Luke 7:2, NAU
⢠Matthew 27:54 âŚsaid, "Truly this was the Son of God!â
⢠NAU Luke 23:47 Now when the centurion saw what had
happened, he began praising God, saying, "Certainly this man
was innocent."
⢠NAS Acts 10:1 Now there was a certain man at Caesarea named
Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort, 2 a
devout man, and one who feared God with all his household, and
gave many alms to the Jewish people, and prayed to God
continually.
⢠How many do you think we will get to meet in heaven? 6
7. Luke 7:3, The Centurion
⢠This Centurion is an amazing man, his compassion or his young
slave, is deep respect for Jesus, and his extreme respect for and
value of a hierarchy of authority.
⢠He did not just impose upon Jesus but instead sent a delegation
of ceremonially clean Jews in, NAU Luke 7:3 When he heard
about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and
save the life of his slave.
⢠NAU Matthew 15:22-28, âAnd a Canaanite womanâŚcry out,
saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of DavidâŚ26 And He
answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread
and throw it to the dogs.ââŚâ
7
8. Luke 7:6, The Centurion
⢠NAU Luke 7:6 âŚthe centurion sent friends, sayingâŚI am not
worthy for You to come under my roof;
⢠NAU Luke 7:7 âŚI did not even consider myself worthy to come
to YouâŚ
8
14. Luke 7:8, Authority
⢠NAU Luke 7:8 "For I also am a man placed under
authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to
this one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another,
'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!'
and he does it.â
⢠This man seems to have not only great faith, that
Jesus commended him for, but he has an
extraordinary understanding of authority.
⢠He also seems to have a grasp on the Trinity
relationship of Christ and the Father.
14
16. Nain
⢠NAU Luke 7:11 Soon
afterwards He went
to a city called
Nain; and His
disciples were
going along with
Him, accompanied
by a large crowd.
16
17. Luke 7:14,
Jesus Was Not Fearful
⢠NAU Luke 7:14 And He came up and touched the
coffinâŚ
⢠Jesus, the author of life, did not fear death, or show
any concern about being ceremonially unclean
according to the Jewish traditions.
⢠Although the New Testament only records Jesus
raising people from the dead three times. The plural
grammar in verse 22 allows for more (plural no
degree). The MacArthur Study Bible, says on page
1526, "Verse 22 implies that Christ also raised others
who are not specifically mentioned." 17
18. Luke 7:11-16,
Jesus And Funerals
⢠There is a story about a young pastor readying himself to do
his first funeral and he decided that he would do everything
just as Jesus had done. So he studied every passage where
Jesus was at a funeral, here's a few of them;
⢠Did you know that Jesus ruined every funeral that He ever
attended?
⢠NAU Luke 8:41-56 ⌠JairusâŚonly daughterâŚ49 ⌠âYour
daughter has died⌠54 He, however, took her by the hand
and called, saying, "Child, arise!" 55 And her spirit returned,
and she got up immediatelyâŚâ
⢠NAU John 11:43 When He had said these things, He cried
out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth."
18
19. Luke 7:16, Their Reaction
⢠NAU Luke 7:16 Fear gripped them all, and
they began glorifying God, saying, "A great
prophet has arisen among us!" and, "God has
visited His people!â
⢠If Jesus was a televangelist he would've
stopped and said âNow send in your seed
moneyâŚâ
⢠Instead fear grip the people and they praise
God!
19
21. Luke 7:18, Who Is This Guy John?
⢠Matthew 11:2 Now when John, while imprisoned,
heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his
disciples 3 and said to Him, "Are You the Expected One,
or shall we look for someone else?â
⢠âJohnâ is used 9Xâs in Luke 7
⢠âJohnâ is used 9Xâs in John 1
⢠âJohnâ is used 8Xâs in Matthew 11
⢠John 10:41 Many came to Him and were saying, "While
John performed no sign, yet everything John said about
this man was true.â
⢠How would you like that to be said about you, for all
eternity?
22. Luke 7:27, Who Is This Guy John?
⢠NAU Luke 7:27 "This is the one about whom it is
written, 'BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF
YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.â
⢠What is Jesus referring to?
23. Luke 7:27, John / Elijah?
⢠Matthew 11:14 "And if you are willing to accept it,
John himself is Elijah who was to come.
⢠Malachi 4:5 "Behold, I am going to send you Elijah
the prophet before the coming of the great and
terrible day of the LORD. 6 "He will restore the hearts
of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the
children to their fathers, so that I will not come and
smite the land with a curse.â
⢠Matthew 17:3âŚMoses and Elijah appearedâŚ
⢠Luke 1:13 But the angel said to...Zacharias... 17 "It is
he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the
spirit and power of Elijah...
24. Matthew 17:11, Elijah Was At The
Transfiguration
⢠Matthew 17:11 And He answered and said, "Elijah is coming
and will restore all things; 12 but I say to you that Elijah already
came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him
whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is going to
suffer at their hands." 13 Then the disciples understood that He
had spoken to them about John the Baptist.
⢠âElijah is coming and will restore all thingsâ
⢠Revelation 11:4 These are the two olive trees and the two
lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.
⢠Matthew 27:47 And some of those who were standing there,
when they heard it, began saying, "This man is calling for
Elijah.â
⢠Mark 9:11-14âŚThey asked Him, saying, "Why is it that the
scribes say that Elijah must come first?â [also Luke 9:8-33]
25. Luke 7:27, John / Elijah?
⢠John 1:21 They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I
am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No.â 22 Then they
said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who
sent us? What do you say about yourself?" 23 He said, "I am A VOICE OF
ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE
LORD,' as Isaiah the prophet said." 24 Now they had been sent from the
Pharisees. 25 They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you
baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" 26 John
answered them saying, "I baptize in water, but among you stands One
whom you do not know.
⢠Isaiah 40:10 Behold, the Lord God will come with might, With His arm
ruling for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him, And His recompense
before Him. 11 Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will
gather the lambs, And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the
nursing ewes.
⢠John 10:11 "I am the good shepherdâŚ
26. Luke 7:23,
No Offense
⢠NAU Luke 7:23 "Blessed
is he who does not take
offense at Me.â
⢠NAU Romans 9:33 just as it
is written, "BEHOLD, I
LAY IN ZION A STONE OF
STUMBLING AND A ROCK
OF OFFENSE, AND HE
WHO BELIEVES IN HIM
WILL NOT BE
DISAPPOINTED.â
27. Luke 7:28, End Of The OT
⢠NAU Luke 7:28 "I say to you, among those born of
women there is no one greater than John; yet he
who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than
he.â(âthe kingdom of heavenâ in Matthew 11:11)
29. Luke 7:29, NKJ KJV have; âthey
justified Godâ
⢠NAU Luke 7:29 When all the people and the
tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged
God's justice, having been baptized with the
baptism of John.
⢠NKJ KJV ⌠justified GodâŚ
⢠NET âŚacknowledged God's justiceâŚ
⢠YLT âŚdeclared God righteousâŚ
⢠NIVO âŚacknowledged that God's way was

30. Luke 7:30, The Pharisees Rejected
God's Purpose
⢠NAU Luke 7:30 But the Pharisees and the lawyers
rejected God's purpose for themselves, not
having been baptized by John.
⢠They ârejected God's purpose for themselves,â it
sounds to me like they rejected salvation. I don't
think they will be able to blame this one on God.
⢠NAU 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord isâŚnot wishing for any
to perish but for all to come to repentance.
[Matthew 23:37]

32. My Summary Of Luke 7:31-35
⢠This seems like the Lord is saying we gave you
every opportunity. We gave you a righteous
very religious man, (asceticism), and a man of
the people (righteous yet fully human), and
you would not listen to either.

33. Luke 7:32, Market

35. Luke 7:34
A Drunkard?
⢠NAU Luke 7:34 "The Son
of Man has come eating
and drinking, and you
say, 'Behold, a
gluttonous man and a
drunkard, a friend of tax
collectors and sinners!â
⢠We know that Jesus ate
and drank yet was
without sin.
36. Drinking?
⢠We just covered drinking
alcohol in Luke chapter 5.
⢠Please give me a little time
and I will have it up on
slideshare.net/dkooyers
⢠I will leave a few slides after
the "The Endâ slide.
⢠But here are a few
questions you may want to
search the answers for in
Scripture.
37. Drinking?
⢠Is it safe to drink?
⢠It okay to drink?
⢠Is it wise to drink?
⢠Can drinking hurt my
brother?
⢠Am I in danger of
becoming addicted?
⢠Is it good for my health?
⢠Is drinking biblical?
39. Luke 7:36, Pharisees
⢠Luke 7:36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting
Him to dine with him, and He entered the
Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.
⢠This Pharisee, Simon, reminds me of Nicodemus. I
wonder how many of these elders got saved?
⢠John 3:1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees,
named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;
40. Luke 7:38, Reclining At The Table
⢠Today is July 30, 2013, Verse of the Day -- Luke 22:14 And when the hour had come He reclined at
the table, and the apostles with Him.
⢠THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
⢠It was an honor to lie down and eat in Jesus' day.
⢠MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY
⢠The famous picture by Leonardo da Vinci of Jesus and His 12 apostles sitting upright while eating at
the Last Supper is not scripturally correct. Feasts, banquets, and special dinners were usually served
on a table which was only six to twelve inches high. The guests would lie around the outside edges
on cushions, leaning on their left elbow and eating with their right hand. This was to remind the
Israelites that they didn't have to be ready to leave at a moment's noticeâlike they did on the first
Passover in Egypt.
⢠This is why a woman could wash Jesus' feet at dinner (Luke 7) as she wasn't under the table! This
also makes sense of the verse (John 13:23) about John leaning on Jesus' breast at dinner. There are
some 30 verses referring to this eating style including:
⢠. . . a Pharisee asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table.â
Luke 11:37. . . as He was reclining at the table in the house, behold many tax-gatherers and sinners
came and were dining . . . âMatthew 9:10
⢠And as they were reclining at the table and eating . . . âMark 14:18
⢠. . . Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. âJohn 12:2

⢠Who Loves Him More?
⢠Sunday, February 9th, 2014Interpreting Verses
⢠Q. Thank you for your daily insight. I have a question about a verse, Luke 7:47. The last sentence really struck me as odd so I
must be misinterpreting. In the previous verses Jesus explained that the man with the biggest debt forgiven would have the
most love for the man he had owed. Was he implying in Luke 7:47 that since the woman had more sins, she would love Jesus
more than a righteous man?
⢠A. Jesus was a dinner guest at the home of Simon the Pharisee when a woman who had lived a sinful life came into the room
and anointed the Lordâs feet. Simon did not approve of this because Pharisees didnât associate with sinners and would not
have allowed something like this to happen. In response Jesus told Simon the story of two debtors.
⢠He said, âTwo people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.Neither
of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?â
⢠Simon replied, âI suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.â
⢠âYou have judged correctly,â Jesus said (Luke 7:41-43).
⢠Then Jesus contrasted what the woman who washed and anointed His feet had done for Him with Simon who had done
almost nothing. The point of the passage is that the woman knew she was a sinner in need of a savior. She knew she had
been forgiven much and showed much gratitude, like the man in the story who had been forgiven the larger debt. Simon the
Pharisee was a self righteous man who looked down on others, and didnât think he needed to be forgiven for much of
anything. He was like the man who had only a small debt canceled.
⢠The woman loved Jesus more because she considered Him to be her Lord and Savior, but to Simon Jesus was just one of his
dinner guests.

42. Luke 7:39,
A Pharisee Evaluating Jesus?
⢠NAU Luke 7:39 Now when the Pharisee who had
invited Him saw this, he said to himself, "If this
man were a prophet He would know who and
what sort of person this woman is who is touching
Him, that she is a sinner.â
⢠What an interesting scene, a religiously/self-
righteous man, and a female sinner, and he's
judging Jesus because of her. Yet Jesus says in,
⢠NAU Luke 7:48 Then He said to her, "Your sins
have been forgiven."
42
43. Luke 7:39,âreligion don't get itâ
⢠This reminds me of,
⢠NAU Luke 18:10-14 where; "Two men went up
into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and
the other a tax collector⌠14 "I tell you, this
man [the sinner] went to his house justified
rather than the other [Pharisee]; for everyone
who exalts himself will be humbled, but he
who humbles himself will be exalted."
43
44. Luke 7:45, A Kiss?
⢠NAU Luke 7:45 "You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the
time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet.
⢠This kiss as neither erotic nor idolatrous, such as Joe
referred to him;
⢠NAU Job 31:26 If I have looked at the sun when it shone
Or the moon going in splendor 27 And my heart became
secretly enticed, And my hand threw a kiss from my
mouth, 28 That too would have been an iniquity calling
for judgment, For I would have denied God above.
46. Luke 7:47, Our Many Sins Are Forgiven
⢠NAU Luke 7:47 "For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have
been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.â
⢠Even when we are in Christ, sometimes our sins can be overwhelming.
Remember, Christ paid it all!
⢠NAU Psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He
removed our transgressions from us.
⢠NAU Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of
it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward
to what lies ahead,
⢠NAU Colossians 2:13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the
uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having
forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of
debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us; and He
has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
47. Luke 7:50,
⢠NAU Luke 7:50 And He said to the woman,
"Your faith has saved you; go in peace.â
⢠It feels to me like the Holy Spirit added this
verse so that we would not think that
somehow salvation comes my foot washing
and tears.
⢠Salvation is by Godâs grace alone, received
through faith alone, in Christ alone.

49. Luke 7:34, Christians In The World
⢠1 Samuel 16:7 1 Corinthians 5:9-10, 12-13 Matthew 5:16 Isaiah 9:2 Matthew 13:24-30 Daniel 3:12 Hebrews 13:17 Luke 20:22-25
⢠Do you think Christians should shop at grocery stores who sell beer and tobacco products? And what about supporting businesses that support homosexuals and/or abortion?
â˘
ANSWER:
⢠There is a vast difference between businesses that are clearly supporting sinful acts like abortion and homosexual activity and those that simply carry items that MAY be sinfully abused. For
instance, in past GMLs, we showed scripturally that drinking wine (including beer) and smoking cigarettes were not necessarily sin in themselves.
⢠The Bible says we must pay taxes (Luke 20:22-25) and obey the laws (Hebrews 13:17), even if the government is corrupt - assuming that you don't disobey God by obeying the law (Daniel 3:12).
⢠"Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" But He detected their trickery and said to them, "Show Me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's." And
He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." â Luke 20:22-25 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your
souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you. â Hebrews 13:17
⢠"There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the administration of the province of Babylon, namely Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego. These men, O king, have disregarded you; they
do not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up." â Daniel 3:12
⢠The Bible also says Believers and nonbelievers WILL live together until the end of the world.Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man
who sowed good seed in his field. But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the
tares became evident also. The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?' And he said to them, 'An enemy has done
this!' The slaves said to him, 'Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?' But he said, 'No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. Allow both to grow
together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, 'First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.'" â
Matthew 13:24-30 By living and working together, God can use us to be witnesses to nonbelievers of His love. The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them. â Isaiah 9:2 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. âMatthew 5:16
⢠This is God's chosen method of spreading the gospel. Therefore, it is God's will that Christians interact with non-Christians.
⢠I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; I did not mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters; for then you would have
to go out of the world . . . For what have I to do with judging outsiders? . . . But those who are outside, God judges. â 1 Corinthians 5:9-10, 12-13 Using an application of this verse, you would be
legalistic to say that you won't go to a store to purchase milk and eggs if they sell wine, beer and cigarettes. But abortion and homosexuality are clearly out of bounds. Therefore, if a business is
promoting homosexual activity AND you have an alternative choice, take the alternative. But if the only local source of electricity is promoting homosexual marriages, it would be dumb to cancel
the service. Remember, God knows your heart.
⢠But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance,
but the LORD looks at the heart." â1 Samuel 16:7.
⢠1 Samuel 16:7 1 Corinthians 5:9-10, 12-13 Matthew 5:16 Isaiah 9:2 Matthew 13:24-30 Daniel 3:12 Hebrews 13:17 Luke 20:22-25
50. Matthew 9:17, Wine
⢠Romans 14:21 It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine [oinos] ,
or to do anything by which your brother stumbles.
⢠Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine [oinos] , for that is
dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
⢠1 Timothy 3:3 not addicted to wine [paroinos] or pugnacious, but
gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money.
⢠<3943> ĎόĎÎżÎšÎ˝ÎżĎ paroinos
⢠Meaning: given to wine, drunken
⢠Origin: from 3844 and 3631
⢠Usage: addicted to wine(2).
⢠1 Timothy 3:8 Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not
double-tongued, or addicted to much wine [oinos] or fond of
sordid gain,
51. Matthew 9:17, Wine
⢠Matthew 9:17 "Nor do people put new wine [oinos] into old wineskins;
otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine [oinos] pours out and the wineskins
are ruined; but they put new wine [oinos] into fresh wineskins, and both are
preserved.â
⢠<3631> ÎżÎšÎ˝ÎżĎ oinos
⢠Meaning: wine
⢠Origin: a prim. word
⢠Usage: wine(33), wine*(1).
⢠[oinos] used 4Xâs in Mark 2:22, 3Xâs in Luke 5:37-38
⢠Luke 7:33 "For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no
wine [oinos] , and you say, 'He has a demon!â 34 "The Son of Man has come
eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard,

52. Luke 7:34, Drinking Alcohol
⢠QUESTION
Dear Compass,
⢠I must say that I never really thought about French kissing and lusting. That study really gave me another avenue of thought. So, just curious, what do you think about drinking?
⢠ANSWER
Contrary to popular belief, the Bible does not forbid drinking alcohol. Jesus, as an example, drank fermented wine, and His first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana.
⢠The Son of Man has come eating and drinking âLuke 7:34
⢠As recorded in John 2:1-11: Miracle of Cana, Jesus turns water into wine.Paul, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, describes the benefits of drinking in certain situations:
⢠. . . use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. â1 Timothy5:23And the Old Testament addresses wine more than once in non-prohibitive terms.
⢠So your barns will be filled with plenty
And your vats will overflow with new wine. âProverbs 3:10And your mouth like the best wine!
It goes down smoothly for my beloved,
Flowing gently through the lips of those who fall asleep. âSong of Solomon 7:9
⢠And wine which makes man's heart glad,
So that he may make his face glisten with oil,
And food which sustains man's heart. âPsalm 104:15
⢠But Paul also gave warnings to the church leadership not to get drunk or become addicted to wine.Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor
enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good âTitus 2:3not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. â1 Timothy 3:3
⢠And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit âEphesians5:18
⢠And the Old Testament gives practical advice regarding its use and the consequences of immoderation:
⢠. . . whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise. âProverbs 20:1. (See also Proverbs 23:20, Isaiah 28:7, Isaiah 5:22 and Proverbs 23:31-33.)All Christians also have a responsibility to be careful
and not cause a brother to stumble, e.g. drinking in front of a weaker Christian brother who believes it is wrong.
⢠But take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. â1 Corinthians 8:9Regarding church leaders the Bible states:
⢠Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain â1 Timothy 3:8
⢠For the overseer (Elder) must be above reproach as Godâs steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine âTitus 1:7
⢠Therefore, if you are in leadership in the church, you shouldn't be addicted to, or have "too much," alcohol.
⢠For women the Bible says:
⢠Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips, nor enslaved to much wine . . . âTitus 2:3Everyone else falls somewhere between "not much" and "drunk."

⢠QUESTION FOR THE DAY
⢠Dear Compass,
⢠I am a Christian who has been divorced and is now remarried. At the time when I was considering divorce, I wasn't a very mature Christian and
truly believed that God gave me the ok to divorce. I now believe that Satan tricked me into thinking I was hearing from God. My husband had
been a Christian earlier in his life but had gotten involved in adultery and drugs and had slipped away from his faith.
⢠I am now happily married to my second husband of 8 years, and although he is not a Christian, I do believe God is beginning to work in his life. I
know I should have sought a Christian husband, but I can't change the past.
⢠Would you please give those of us who are remarried and didn't trust God for our first marriages some Scripture to reassure us that we are
forgiven and that we can put this behind us to go on with our lives? Someone once told me I am committing adultery daily due to getting
remarried, and this haunts me to no end. Some days I feel like I am going to hell for being remarried, and I can't seem to find peace.

ANSWER:
⢠When God looks at Christians, He sees perfectly righteous individuals, not the sinners that we are.
⢠for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God âRomans 3:23 Three verses you should commit to memory ("Your word I have treasured in
my heart, That I may not sin against You." âPsalm 119:11)
⢠As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. âPsalm 103:12
⢠. . . forgetting what {lies} behind and reaching forward to what {lies} ahead, âPhilippians 3:13
⢠And when you were dead in your transgressions and uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all
our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us {and} which was hostile to us; and He has taken it
out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. âColossians 2:13-14
⢠It may also be encouraging to you that those who have really messed up in this life can be more motivated to unabashedly seek God's will -
therefore, understanding the depth of your forgiveness, you could actually be more effective for the cause of Christ:
⢠For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little. âLuke

57. MUMMY MASK MAY REVEAL OLDEST FRAGMENT
OF THE GOSPEL OF MARK
JAN 20, 2015
⢠The Story: A text found on papyrus used on a mummy mask may be the oldest copy of a gospel known to existâa
fragment of the Gospel of Mark that was written during the first century, before the year AD 90. Until now, the oldest
surviving copies of the gospel texts date to the second century (the years AD 101 to 200). The Background: In 2012
Daniel Wallace, a New Testament scholar at Dallas Theological Seminary, mentioned in a public debate that researchers
had found a fragment of the earliest copy of the Gospel of Mark. This weekend, another scholar, Craig Evans, a professor
of New Testament studies at Acadia Divinity College in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, reconfirmed the existence of the fragment.
This text was written on a sheet of papyrus that was later reused to create a mask that was worn by a mummy. Although
the mummies of Egyptian pharaohs wore masks made of gold, notes LiveScience, ordinary people had to settle for masks
made out of papyrus (or linen), paint, and glue. Given how expensive papyrus was, people often had to reuse sheets that
already had writing on them. Scientists have developed a technique that allows them to remove the text from the mask
without harming the ink on the paper. The gospel fragment is one of hundreds of new texts. "We're recovering ancient
documents from the first, second and third centuries. Not just Christian documents, not just biblical documents, but
classical Greek texts, business papers, various mundane papers, personal letters," Evans told Live Science. Evans also
told Live Science that the text was dated through a combination of carbon-14 dating, studying the handwriting on the
fragment and studying the other documents found along with the gospel. Because of a nondisclosure agreement, Evans
said he can't say more about the text's date until the papyrus is published later this year.
⢠Why It Matters: Andreas J. KÜstenberger and Justin Taylor have argued that the evidence suggests the exact date of
Jesus crucifixion was April 3, AD 33. A fragment from before AD 80 would establish that the Gospel of Mark had not only
been written within 50 years of Jesusâ death and resurrection, but that it would have already begun to circulate widely.
âTo have a first-century witness to the text of the New Testament is unprecedented,â says Denny Burk. âThat a fragment
of Mark was found in Egypt is even more astonishing. That would seem to require that the original was probably penned
decades before.â Justin Taylor recommends Christians take a âwait and seeâ approach. "Itâs tempting to be either naĂŻve
(of course this is true!) or cynical (of course this isnât true!)," says Taylor. "One of the unfortunate things about
announcing a discovery apart from a published peer-reviewed process is that the church and the culture simply have to
take the scholarsâ word for it. I would prefer that these things be vetted before they are publicly discussed." 57
