This presentation takes a look through some of the pictures in the DkIT archive while giving them some context, it goes from the 1970's when the college was founded to present day. It also showcases how far DkIT has come since it was first founded.

8. • Up until 1973 when women got married they had to give
up their job in the civil service (Smyth 2010)
• There were 23 female politicians from 1923-1977. In
1977, there were 6 female TDs (Buckley 2013, p.345;
Coakley 2010, p.127; Randall and Smith 1987, p.193)
• There were 2795666 Catholics in Ireland during this
period; this was 93% of people in the country (CSO 2018)
• The Vocational Education Committees were a local
authority body that administered all third level education
until 1992. The boards were elected locally and the
bishop in the picture was the chairman for the Louth VEC.

13. • The Oil Crisis took place in 1973, when the oil
producing countries in the Middle East banded
together to form OPEC (Mitchell 2010, p.196). They
then proceeded to cut the supply of oil to the West
which raised prices, with the result that ordinary
people were faced with huge oil shortages. This led
to huge inflation within Ireland.
• The ESB had a monopoly over the electricity market
in Ireland in this period (Gaffney et al 2017, p.72).
• There were 151 sunny days in 1978 on average (Met
Eireann 2018).

22. The Irish Independent, The Irish Times, The Irish Sun, The Herald, Irish
Daily Star, Irish Daily Mirror, Irish Daily Mail, Irish Examiner, Irish News
of the World and the Irish Press were the daily papers from 1970 -2010;
in 2015 it was the same except for the News of the World and the Irish
Press which closed down in 2011 and 1995 respectively. (O’Brien 2008,
p.56; Horgan 2001, p.95)
Television stations:
In 1970 RTE was the only Irish television station. Set up in 1961, it
enjoyed an Irish TV monopoly. Some counties had access to the BBC
(1952) along with UTV (1959) (Morash 2010, p.75).
Radio stations:
Radio Eireann (1937) and BBC (1922) were the two major radio stations.
There were also the pirate radio stations Radio Melina and Radio
Caroline (1964). Because of the RTE monopoly all other Irish stations
were shut down (Morash 2010, p.78).
The internet was first introduced into Ireland in 1992 by the team of
Colm Grealy and Barry Flanagan (Barry Flanagan 2012).
