2. A little background?
A cross cultural background – A Sri Lankan
from Bangladesh, married to a Brahmin –
what more can you ask for !
Mom is an awesome cook, and my entry
into the kitchen was only post marriage.
Learning recipes from my MIL to satisfy the
hubby’s taste buds, to learning Sri Lankan
cuisine to satisfy mine – boy what a time !
I’ve collected quite a few books over that
period, and now after 12 years, I can
proudly say that I can cook well
3. Sweet’ ‘Art?
It’s been Sujani’s and my dream for a while,
but never had the courage to start. With the
support of friends, and Suzie’s college, we
started on Feb 14 this year.
I don’t have a formal training but attended
Naveena’s fondant decorating class and
Rumana’s chocolate decorating class. Sujani
is more talented and thanks to her
education, she understands the science
behind baking. She has also done internships
one at a reputed star hotel in Chennai and
one at the Westin in Bangladesh where she
trained under well established chefs.
4. Sugar Free Cakes?
We’ve been making sugar free
cakes using Sucralose. But we’d
also been looking out for healthier
options. After a lot of research, we
started using Fructose, which
doesn’t have any added chemicals.
Oh and there’s no butter in these
cakes too. So eat without watching
your diet!
5. Sisters? Fights? Did you throw
cakes at each other? :P
Sujani and I are the souls behind
Sweet’ ‘art. Baking is a passion for
both of us; We never get tired,
even at mid night. And touch
wood, we never argue!
When Sujani is overloaded with
projects in college, I work alone
(but is quite rare)
Psst: We are 5 sisters, (need you
ask as to what goes on at home)
6. 2 boys! How crazy can it get?
Oh yes, but they are absolute darlings too! My
elder son is so proud to take cupcakes every
other day to school and show off his mom's
talents. He is my biggest critic too !
I always ensure that I give priority to my kids
over my work, actually that’s why midnight
baking happens a lot.
I am a full time mom, cook, cleaner, laundry
lady and sometimes driver too ;-) ! My hubby
travels for almost 20 days a month, so I have to
be THE parent around, full time, no
compromise!!
But I guess that’s what most working mothers
do! We are great at Multi-tasking :-)
7. Biggest order?
Our biggest order till date would be a
birthday cake (Chota Bheem theme)
alongwith 200 cupcakes. It was one of
the initial orders when my sister had
gone out of town and I didn’t know how
to work with fondant. I informed the
client that we’d do a simple cake with
plain cupcakes. But once I saw the
photos of the birthday kids, I saw my
kids' faces on them. :) So there I was,
taking print outs and cutting small figures
and sticking them on cupcakes with
toothpicks and simultaneously working
on the cake (all in one day)
Suffice to say, the clients loved it!
8. Ingredients?
My husband travels a lot. So our
supply does come from Singapore,
Dubai, US and also UK (our sisters live
there). We import cocoa (Hersheys),
baking soda, food flavorings, food
colors, sprinkles, add-ons etc. We have
tried alternative local brands for cocoa
but were never satisfied with the
results.
I don’t deny we get the same stuff
here nowadays but they are way too
costly. Like I said before, no
compromise on quality especially for
our precious little customers.
9. Specialties?
Personally I prefer our vanilla
cupcakes. However many have
complimented our eggless chocolate
cupcakes and cakes. On the dessert
front, it is the Tiramisu which is a
hot-seller now. Thanks to Yogita at
Harrisons, we know it is in demand.
10. HBG and Showcase?
We would like to take this
opportunity to thank HBG for the
kind of exposure we've got after
joining. Till date we haven’t
advertised about ourselves except
for these forums.
Hoping to have a wonderful time at
the Bakers Showcase on 13th.
