Billionaire Oprah Winfrey is best
known for hosting her own
internationally popular talk show,
The Oprah Winfrey Show, which
was the highest rated program of
its kind in history and nationally
syndicated from 1986 to 2011.
She is also an actress,
philanthropist, publisher and
producer.

• Born 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi
• Spent her early years in house without
electricity and running water.
• She learned to read at home, and
skipped kindergarten to go straight
into first grade.
• Education and books helped Oprah to
realize that this was not all that there
was in life.
• Attended TSU in 1971 and majored in
speech communication and
performing arts.

• At the age of 19, began working at
WVOL radio in Nashville as a reporter.
• At 19 years old, she became youngest
person and 1st African-American woman
to anchor the news at WTVF-TV.
• In 1977, Co-anchor the Six O-Clock
News in Baltimore.
• Co-host of local talk show, People Are
Talking at Baltimore.

• In 1984 she hosted WLS-TV’s
half hour morning talk show, AM

• Within a month, Show became
the dominant talk show in

• The show expanded to one hour
