Centaurus Research Paper
The constellation I have chosen is Centaurus! Centaurus is of course a bright constellation that
belongs in the southern sky and is considered to be one of the largest constellations. Of course
because of its position in the Milky Way, it contains several very bright stars and to add to this, its
beta and alpha star are used to find the constellation Crux, this constellation has a magnitude of 6.5
and 281 stars and with the magnitude of 6.5 makes it visible to the unaided eye. I chose this
constellation because I find it the most interesting and I find it absolutely beautiful, we have so
much left to discover about this constellation.
Well in Greece, the Centaurus of course hence the name represents a Centaur or Ixionidae, this

Dante And Virgil's Death
Dante and Virgil came across shattered rocks and their path is blocked by Infamy of Crete disguised
as a cow. Infamy of Crete was considered as a monster, with attention to having a man's body and a
head of a bull. This monster was known as Minotaur. In order to have a safe passage, they had to
make it pass Minotaur. With this in mind, Virgil provoked the monster by insulting him. Abruptly
asking, who brought death upon him and screaming go away beast. The breaking point was when
Virgil said that Dante is only there to see his suffering. Minotaur was filled with anger and broke
loose. Unable to run, the monster jumped back and forth giving Dante and Virgil a safe path across.
As the two climb down further, they noticed a stream of

Centaurs Research Paper
Centaurs are mythical creatures born with the torso, head and arms of a man and the rest of the body
of a horse. Most centaurs are known for always being drunk and violent. They usually would drink
too much wine which would cause them to start conflicts with others, hurting people mostly women.
But not all the centaurs were bad, Chiron was one of the wise and more civilized centaurs. He was
known for his ability to treat people with his experience with medicine, he also taught others how to
hunt for food using bow & arrows.
The centaurs were originally from the mountains and forests of Magnesia which is part of the same
region of Thessaly, Greece. They had good resources living by the water, they were able to bath and
hunt for food. They also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
King Pirithous of the lapiths, son of Ixion, had invited the centaurs to his wedding. Then the
centaurs had come to the wedding and got drunk and disorderly and pursued the Lapith women. One
of the centaurs even tried running off with the king's bride. That's when a fierce battle had erupted
between them. To defend themselves the centaurs had used tree trunks and slabs of boulder as
weaponries, but ultimately the lapiths won the fight, killing many centaurs. After the battle was
finally over the lapiths had order and forced them to leave out of Thessaly.
Centaurus himself is the offspring of Ixion who had made love Hera. Ixion had abused his pardon by
trying to seduce Zeus's wife, Hera. So Zeus had made a cloud substitute of her, by which Ixion had
mated and became the father of Centaurus, who fathered all of the centaurs by the mares of Mount
Pelion. Ixion basically had betrayed Zeus which made him mad, so Zeus had punished him and sent
him to hell.
There were centaurs in the movie The Chronicles of Narnia they had a big battle with the White
witch and the Telmarines. In the book Percy Jackson– the Lighting Thief, Percy had seen centaurs
drunk outside of his train's window running wild. They were just a handful of trouble in all of the
movies and books. They were not the nicest creatures to be around you'd probably be dead or in

Analyse On The Painting : Hercules Killing The Centaur Nessus
Analyse on the Painting "Hercules Killing the Centaur Nessus"
Last week I had the opportunity to have one of the the most exciting opportunity that I could have so
far, I went to visit "The Museum of Art, Houston". For the first, I could better understand why I am
taking Huma class, and while there I could apply all the knowledge that I have been acquiring
throughout this semester. While I was seeing the pieces of art, the analyst part of me started coming
out of my mind. All the methods on how to analyse made sense. I saw different paintings and
sculptures, from egyptians art to greek. However, There was a painting that stood out of all arts that
i had seen that day, which is the painting made by Sebastiano Rucci, a beautiful illustration how
Hercules killing the centaur Nessus. Although from the story I used to watch as child, I had the
image of Hercules as a hero and never questioned about how Hercules is perceived from the people,
up to now.
The Hercules I used be amazed for, is different from what I used to imagine, and it goes from
physical appearance to how I observe the painting picture. In my mind, I always thought Hercules
huge guy, big hair and hero, of course. For me the world revolved around those sort of hero's, and I
desired to be like Hercule. However, this image of a perfect man sorf of disappeared and that the
world was all about gods and that there were different god for everything.
According to the painting information it represents a story from

Personal Narrative Essay: The Kidd
"I'm trying," the Kidd snarled. "But this miserable bird wants to put his tail feathers in my face." I
looked over and the macaw was now pacing across his forehead. Captain Bluebird roared with
laughter as I continued to ferociously kick and beat at the sea with my legs and fists using the last of
my strength to reach the shore. * * * We collapsed on the dark sand under the light of the silvery
moon gasping for air and trembling with exhaustion. Then once Captain Bluebird had regained his
strength, he built a small blaze. "Gordok summoned that monster from the deep to murder you," he
said, sitting next to me. I watched the orange sparks from the fire curl and twist into the starry sky.

I'd skidded to a stop, my left sneaker just barely missing the front spokes. I hadn't touched it. I hadn't
even really breathed on it, I don't think, yet the cycle began to teeter. Wobble. To tremble and to
shake apart. One minute it was an aluminum road racer the next a heap of tiny gears and cogs
littering the pavement. I'm not exactly sure why, but I think it was my fault. Or there was the time I'd
cut Miss Wee–Wee's grass and accidently on purpose mowed straight through a patch of her prized
pink petunias. I could've gone on and on, but I decided to put the brakes on self–loathing. "What
about my dad and Grandpa?" "They're of the same line." He winked at me. "Tomorrow, you and
Mason must go and find the centaurs. They will help you to understand how to defeat Gordok and
save our kingdom." "Do the centaurs look like men with a horse's hindquarter?" Mason whispered.

Women Are Cunning And Beast Like From The Waist They Are...
With a riotous appetite.
Down from the waist they are centaurs,
Though woman all above.
But to the girdle do the gods inherit;
Beneath is all the fiend's. There's hell, there's darkness [4.6.121–125]
Why call women centaurs? Aren't Centaurs male? This use of the word makes the passage lose all of
its intended meaning. To justify the use of this word, readers jump to the easy conclusion that Lear
is trying to say that women are cunning and beast–like or that analyzing this may be going a little
too deep. But, if King Lear chooses to overlook the entire picture that surrounds centaurs, there will
be those who choose to question his choice of words and his credibility; which weakens his plea for
pity and tarnishes his image as the wronged father. By referring to his daughters as centaurs, he fails
to take the history and the entire construct of centaurs and creates a very distorted image,
unintentionally proving to himself and the audience that he is weakened, scared and undeserving of
sympathy. With the use of one word, he has tarnished his image as a king and a wronged protagonist
on many levels.
To start, the history and etymology of the word needs to be taken into consideration. According to
the OED, a centaur referred to "A member of a people of ancient Thessaly renowned for their skill
with horses". The OED also mentions that that the Greeks coined this term to refer to a partnership
that was not familiar to them; a partnership between man and horse that would become

Scythian Women's Role In Greek Myth
Amazons were mythic female warriors, who fought many male Greek heroes and supposedly some
real ancient men. They are first mentioned in Homer's Iliad as Amazones antianeirai, but their part in
Greek myth likely goes further back. They are one of the most prevalent subjects of Greek vase
paintings, and they are commonly seen in murals, clay dolls, sculptures, and monuments of the
ancient world. They were said to be fierce fighters, mainly with bows and javelins. Amazon's
fighting was up to par with the male heroes they faced. They valued comradery, much like Greek
hoplites. They are associated with land to the East of Greece, especially Scythia. The Ancient
Greco–Roman world commonly believed Amazons were real women of the remote past, and some
even thought Amazons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scythians were nomadic peoples of the steppes that thrived from the seventh century BCE to around
CE 500. Scythian women lived much like the men (Mayor 2014, 10–11). Pomponius Mela (ca CE
43) says the women participated in war because the Scythians were so savage (3.34–35). Three out
of four female graves of the steppes include weapons, which suggest they were warriors (Mayor
2014, 11). One fourth century female grave near ancient Tyras includes a skeleton with skull
wounds and a bronze arrowhead in her knee; moreover, the grave's goods include a quiver, twenty
bronze–tipped arrows with red–stripped wooden shafts, an armored leather belt with iron plates, and
many 'commonly' female goods. Arrows are the most common weapon in female warrior graves. All
evidence shows that armed women and men were buried the same (Mayor 2014, 64–66). Scythians
were not Greeks, but they did interact often. Greeks saw them defiantly as other than them, not to
mention female heroes were far from an actuality in Greek society. Amazons were popular in myth,
but they were not meant to reflect a Greek conception of warfare

The durability of clay has brought forth an immense abundance of Greek pottery, a craft mastered
by Athenian artists. Archeologists have found hundreds of varieties in creation, shape, function,
style, and artwork in Archaic vases. The museum has been blessed with one of these priceless
artifacts; it is the duty of this establishment to accumulate as much data as possible surrounding the
vase. In first identifying technique, dimensions, and condition, as well as describing shape,
ornament, and figural scenery, one may then begin to analyze the vase. This serves the general
purpose of understanding where the artifact stands in Greek culture and history. Through the

His four legs stand more relaxed than those of the centaur to his right, who lunges forward towards a
human enemy. This centaur differs from the first in that he faces away from the viewer; his bare
back is exposed, and in his right hand he grasps the front of the spear. However, his left arm is open,
exposing the palm of his left hand. The third centaur is bearded and is shown in profile. Facing the
humans to his left, he stands on his hind legs, recoils in defense, and holds his spear behind his head
with both hands. His left hand grasps the front of the spear, and his right hand grasps the back of the
spear. To his right there is a small insect–like figure, with two sets of wing–pairs protruding from its
upper section and legs jutting from its lower section.
Of the human figures, the first is male and faces the two centaurs to the left of the viewer. Also
lunging forward, he plants his front foot as the heel of his back foot rises. His hair is shorter than
that of the centaurs, and he holds the Boeotian variation of the hoplite shield that covers his mouth
and chin. This shield is decorated with the outline of a turtle. The restored condition of the body
leaves his clothing, or lack thereof, indistinguishable. It is also hard to discern whether he or the
character to his right is holding a sword, which is short and points downward. The next figure, also
human, lunges in the opposite direction. He is bearded and mustached, and lion skin is draped

Primo Levi's Quaestio De Centauris

Trachi, being a centaur, is made aware of this encounter because he receives a pang of anxiety

The narrator doesn't just begin at the beginning of Trachi's life or his friendship with the narrator.
Instead, he starts with the origin of the species themselves. Within a sort of book of Genesis, we see
how the species began. This telling of this story allows the narrator to display his credibility and
show that he believes in the centaurs and carries a deep understanding of them. This sort of start
gives him time to win over his listeners. The narrator has specifically chosen to tell this story "Ab
ovo," in order to start with the beginning of time and work from there. This choice tells something
about the narrator. This decision allows the speaker to gain our trust before breaking the news that
he is actually a terrible person that betrays his friend. Had he chosen to start with the story about
going off in the woods to sleep with Terese, we would see him as more of a villain than by
beginning innocently with the origin. This crafty plan of his shows us that we cannot trust our
narrator because of the way he uses the story to his

The Mythology Of Greek Mythology
There are many different types of different creatures of Greek Mythology. There are Centaurs,
Minotaur, Pegasus, Sirens, Medusa, and many more. These creatures can either be helpful to the
Gods and Goddesses or they can work against them. Some of the creatures' stories even intertwine
with the stories of the Gods and Goddesses of Greek mythology. I will concentrate on the following
creatures: Centaurs, Pegasus, Sirens, and Medusa. My favorite creatures out of all of these are the
Sirens, because I think that they were beautiful creatures with an evil side about that. I will explain
what they are, where they came from, and the different myths about them. Centaurs are half–man
and half–horse. There are many different myths as to how the Centaur was born. One myth, the most
popular one that has different stories around it, is that Ixion raped Hera, the wife of Zeus. Zeus did
not believe Hera when she told him this so Zeus made a cloud (Nephele) that looked like Hera to lay
with Ixion to see if it would happen again and this was how the Centaurs were born. Much to
everyone's surprise, there are female centaurs and they are said to be of great beauty. Centaurs can
either be described as wild and bold creatures or as savages. They are said to be the first man race to
inhabit the forest of Thessaly. They are also sometimes called beasts, because of how they looked.
These creatures are featured in the movie Percy Jackson: The Lighting Thief, and many like it. Now

Portrayal Of Centaurs In Ancient And Modern Literature
he Portrayal of Centaurs in Ancient and Modern Literature Commonly characterized as a
mythological creature containing the upper half of a human and the lower half of a horse, Merriam–
Webster defines a centaur as the following: "any of a race of creatures fabled to be half human and
half horse and to live in the mountains of Thessaly" ("Centaur"). But how did the conception of a
centaur first occur? What and where is its origin? And what about centaurs has captured the
attention of people for hundreds of years? Many scholars, both modern and ancient, have debated
over the origin and role of centaurs, and have come up with conclusions ranging from descendance
from Gods to the misinterpretation of a skilled horseback rider. However, these scholars, with a few
exceptions, have come to the conclusion that most centaurs represent the wildness of life, animal
desires, barbarism. From the ancient Library of Apollodorus, to J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter
series, ancient and modern authors alike have written about centaurs in books and stories. This paper
discusses the potential origins of centaurs, how their description developed over time, and their role
in both Ancient Greek mythology and modern literature.

Summary Of The Centaur
Within May Swenson's "The Centaur," she talks about a little girl that uses her enormous mind to
imagine herself transforming into a horse. The girl is in a whole new world of her imagination as she
rides through the hills of her backyard. Swenson allows readers to take part in the transformation
from human to horse that the adolescent girl described undergoes, thus emphasizing the importance
of childhood and imagination on the woman identity and how strong and intelligent they could be.
In the poem, May uses the Greek mythological creature, the Centaur, as a symbol of the girl
pretending to ride the horse and then became the horse himself. A centaur is a half–man half–horse
creature. Centaurs are strong creatures they stand for being strong, brave, and they have a hard
identity which reflects the girl's identity of having all these characteristics. Swenson makes it seem
as though the girl herself is a Centaur. In words and phrases like: "my hair flopped to the side like
the mane of a horse"(line 29 to 30), "I shied and skittered and reared"(line 33),"I was the horse and
the rider"(line 38), "spanked my own behind"(line 40 ), and "my two hoofs beat a gallop along the
bank"(line 41 to 42 ) . All these symbolize that the girl is imagining to be a horse and a human at the
same time like a centaur. At the end when her mother said: "why is your mouth all green ?"(line 71 )
it shows how the girl has a very high level of imagination that while she was imagining to be

This story is entirely linked by Trachi, because if you were to remove this central figure, there
would be no relation between these events. Trachi's existence is relied on to tell the story. He is the
reason Levi spends much of this story detailing the history of Centaurs. Then Trachi links us to the
person speaking. This story is a string of episodes all linked by Trachi, they are not linked by outside
actions or causes. For example, the way that we get from the blacksmith to the veterinarian or the
story of the great flood to the first centaur birth is Trachi. These moments are linked by this one
person. However this story is not merely episodic, there is more to the story. Upon picking apart
each individual episode, it becomes clear that these single events contain a more unified action. One
example is the episode about the great flood. Once you pick apart this moment we can see how each
episode contains a unified action. This instance begins by saying that an ark was built because a
great flood was coming. Since everything died in the flood, the deceased formed a fertile mud
around the earth, and this caused a great ecstasy where life and love sprung forth. This meant that
new species could arise, like the centaur. By sectioning off each episode, the speaker is able to craft
similar motifs within them. For example, the motif within this episode of new creatures being

The Centaur By May Swenson Essay
It is unavoidable to doubt one's ability to succeed in a world filled with so many options to fail.
From the time the main character of "The Centaur" by May Swenson was ten years old, he became
enthused by adventure. He was invested himself in all that could be in the world despite obstacles.
Swenson utilizes language, imagery, structure, and point of view to illustrate the main character's
thought process as he explores his mental capacity and physical being. Tying in the mystical
background of the title, "The Centaur," the author uses imagery to drive the contents of the poem.
The poem begins with the main character longingly reminiscing on a naïve stage of his life: "The

basks in the glory of his younger years, and longs for a time when he was oblivious to all of the evils

mystical imagery. "My teeth bared as we wheeled and swished through the dust again. I was the

Formal Analysis: Roman Sarcophagus Essay examples
Formal Analysis: Roman Sarcophagus
There have been countless duels between two opposing sides in the history Roman artistry. This
sculpture relief signifies the classic battle of good versus evil. Time and time again, benevolent
heroes find themselves in a struggle to combat worthy yet malicious adversaries. The Roman
sarcophagus, a two by five feet marble coffin, is certainly no exception. It represents another
division to this timeless good–evil epic, its visual characteristics, emphasis on contrasts, and its
extensive array of details give it an identity that is uniquely its own. It portrays a sense of legendary
fantasy to the viewer, one pertaining to hostility, violence, and pure anger. The sculpture seems

Some of the colors seem out of place. The variation in color may be a result of the author
emphasizing certain areas of the sculpture. Most notably, the artist selects to present the sculpture in
three–dimensions, using this technique to accentuate and magnify the combatants and their physical
attributes. Certain parts of these dimensions seem to stick right out at you, giving the viewer a good
impression of the violence and hatred of war.
Interestingly, instead of four, only three sides of the Sarcophagus are filled with images. The long
section illustrates two Greek heroes, presumably Herakles and Iolaos, battling evil centaurs. The two
other sections show a centaur attacking a lioness and the other, the representation of peace in this
work, two centaurs getting along. Herakles and Iolaos are highlighted by the artist's careful attention
to make them protrude the greatest, accentuating their impact and overall importance in this
sculpture. Every powerful muscle in their bodies is portrayed and given detail in three dimensions.
The three–dimensions not only bring these characters closer to reality but also heighten the heroic
nature, masculinity, and belligerent attitude of the Greek heroes. Instead of using basic geometric
shapes to create works of art, the sculptor chooses to increase the detail in the Sarcophagus by
giving everything in the sculpture individual characteristics and traits. They are presented as being

the people surrounding them. In Greek mythology heroes are often sent to defeat these creatures that

the Centaurs not all were this way, in fact one Centaur by the name of Chiron was instructed by

not only held in high regard by the Greek people but also the gods. Being instructed by the gods and

spacecraft reached the Moon about 63 hours after launch.
Surveyor 1 landed on the lunar surface on 2 June 1966 at 6:17:36 UT (1:17:36 a.m. EST) at about 3

The Centaur placed the spacecraft into an Earth parking orbit and then restarted 6.7 minutes later

a 14.29 second firing of the verier engines was performed at 1:45 UT on 9 September. Immediately
following the maneuver the spacecraft began losing helium pressure. It was concluded that the
helium pressure valve had not reseated tightly and the helium was leaking into the propellant tanks,
causing an overpressure which opened the relief valves, discharging the helium. A new emergency
landing plan was adopted. Early vernier engine firings were made while there was still helium to

Compare and Contrast Two Works of Art
Anthony Arteaga
Art History Ancient World
Homework Assignment #1
Compare and contrast the subject, concept, and the Formal Element of the two works of art. Also,
explain which category this work falls in. The two pieces I have chosen can be found on page 200,
figure 6–51, Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian's Villa and on page 434, figure 14–8,
Battle of the Bird and Serpent. Not only did I choose these pieces for their beauty, but also because
both works have similar yet different subjects, concepts, and formal elements. Both of these images
have subject matter that is the same even though they're different.
The subjects for the Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts from Hadrian's Villa are animals; centaurs

Also, the shapes in the background are fuzzier and assumed in piece one where the shapes in piece
two are sharper and more defined. Another formal element is texture. The first piece, according to
the text, is a floor mosaic which is composed of many colored tesserae that were laid down in
irregular, curving lines, which effectively imitated painted brushstrokes. The individual tiles are
more apparent when viewed closely. This gives the piece a grainy and earthy texture, where it
physically looks bumpy. The textbook says it has foreshortening, the illusion created on a flat
surface in which figures and objects appear to recede or project sharply into space. The second piece
was drawn with tempera on parchment. This makes the piece look smooth, flat, and two
dimensional. The next element is color. The hues in both pieces are relatively earth toned. Both
pieces have a low level of saturation. In piece one, the sky is mustard brown with a section of mint
green that frames the boulder that the male centaur is holding. The rocky scenery has browns and
creams with a dull green and brown center. A bright green patch of pine trees is in the corner that
contrasts with the sky and rocks. The colors to the second piece are similar in the sense that it has
low saturation. The colors are dull and warm. This piece utilizes reds and oranges, in the serpent,
that the first piece does not. Because of the tan

Alpha Lupus: A Story Behind The Constellation
I really like the constellation Lupus also known as the wolf mainly because I really like wolves and
well I have a few ideas on a story behind the costellation. You can see Lupus best in June at 9:00
pm. The neighboring constellations are Centaurus, Circinus, Hydra, Libra, Norma, Scorpius. The
brightest star in the constellation is Men, Alpha Lupi, with an apparent visual magnitude of 2.30.
There are no meteor showers associated with the constellation. Lupus belongs to the Hercules

Who Is Heracles A Hero
Heracles, son of Zeus and Alcemena was a strong baby ever since he was born. His stepmother,
Hera, was tremendously jealous of him, because Zuse had an affair with Hercules mom. So she
would always try to make his life miserable. She made him go crazy, to the point that Heracles
murdered his wife and kids. When Heracles was little, Hera tried to kill him by putting two snakes
in his crib. But Hercules being the tough baby he was, killed the snakes by choking them. Later on
Heracles asked king Eurystheus to make him immortal so that he can clear his sins. So heracles had
to do some labor, that in my opinion did not make him a hero. Because when he was doing his 3rd
labor heracles knew that the hind was a special pet to Diana, but he still shot it either way. Also
Heracles killed a lot of centaurs with his poisonous arrows in his 4th labor. Then Heracles killed

Not only, but also, another reason why Heracles is not a hero to me is because he killed a lot of

Analysis Of The Centntaur By May Swenson
In May Swenson's poem "The Centaur," she talks about a little girl that uses her enormous mind to
imagine herself transforming into a horse. The girl is in a whole new world of her imagination as she
rides through the hills of her backyard. Swenson allows readers to take part in the transformation
from human to horse that the adolescent girl described undergoes, thus emphasizing the importance
of childhood and imagination on the woman's identity and how strong and intelligent they could be.
Words and phrases like: "my hair flopped to the side like the
mane of a horse"(line 29 to 30), "I shied and skittered and reared"(line 33),"I was the horse and the
rider"(line 38), "spanked my own behind"(line 40 ), and "my two hoofs beat a gallop along the
bank"(line 41 to 42 ) . All these symbolize that the girl is imagining being a horse and a human at
the same time like a centaur. At the end when her mother said: "why is your mouth all green ?"(line
71 ) it shows how the girl has a very high level of imagination that while she was imagining to be a
horse she

Greek Mythology: The Reputation Of Sagittarius
I've decided to write about the constellation called Sagittarius. I've chosen this specific constellation
because my zodiac sign is Sagittarius. It has been listed by the astronomer Ptolemy in 2nd century.
The word Sagittarius means Archer and it's derived from Latin. It's usually represented by a centaur
drawing a bow. This constellation has qute a rich mythology in a few cultures. For example, the
Babylonian mythology tells us, that Sagittarius had been identified as the god Nergal. Nergal is a
centaur–like creature firing an arrow from a bow. He's usually portrayed with a pair of wings and
two heads – one of a human and one of a panther. He also typically has a scorpio's sting at the end of
the horse tail. In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is portrayed as a centaur, a hlaf–human and a half–
horse. However, the Greek adopted some features from the Sumerian mythology, which caused
some confusions when speaking about the identity of the archer. One group of people says, that the

food for them. Once he went hunting again and his girlfriend stayed at home doing some
housework. But then, while she was gardening, she got attacked by a huge poisonous scorpio. In that
time, Sagit returned home and he saw what happened. He fired an arrow from his bow and killed the
scorpio, but it was already too late for his girlfriend, she died. He didn't bury her the classical way.
He laid her on the boat and sent her along the stream of water. Then he fired another arrow, this one
was burning. Since then the Sagittarius is represented as a man on a horse firing a fiery

My favorite constellation is Sagittarius because not only is it my horoscope, it has my favorite star

our Sun, and despite being so bright, it's one hundred and forty five years away from us. Back to the
topic of Sagittarius, it also has my favorite mythological creature in it– a centaur drawing its bow.
Sagittarius was created when the centaur Chiron offered to take place of Prometheus, the titan who
gave the idea of fire to man. He was a gentle centaur despite the bestiality of his race and was
especially renowned for training the heroes Jason, Hercules, and Achilles. One day, when Hercules

Basilisk Research Paper
Basilisk
The Basilisk, also known as the King of Serpents, is one of the deadliest creatures in Harry Potter. It
can kill when directly looking at its victims and petrify them when looking at them indirectly, such
as through a mirror reflection. In Harry's second year at Hogwarts, the basilisk of Salazar Slytherin
terrorizes the school and manages to petrify a few students. In Harry's world, basilisks are born
when a chicken egg is hatched beneath a toad and the first to have accomplished this was a Greek
wizard named Herpo the Foul.
The basilisk is one of the most famous mythical beasts and appeared in legends all throughout the
centuries, beginning with writings by the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus. Most commonly,
the basilisk is described as the king of serpents, possesses the ability to kill with a single glance and
is born the same way J. K. Rowling describes it in Harry Potter – when a toad or a snake hatches the
egg of a chicken. It is also often said that basilisks can petrify with its gaze. Legends say that a bird

Similar to Greek myth, the centaurs in Harry Potter have diverse personalities; some, like Firenze,

As Hagrid describes them as "ruddy stargazers" (Rowling, 2014, 273), Centaurs look up at the stars
to read the future, which reflects the legend of Chiron. While centaurs do not use wands for magic,
they are skilled in magical healing, divination, archery and astronomy, traits that are identical to
those of the original Greek mythological centaurs. Firenze's choice to become a teacher at Hogwarts,
as well as his mentor–like personality, is similar to the myth of Chiron (cf. Colbert, 2008,

Analysis Of May Swenson's Poem 'The Centaur'
May Swenson's Common Denominator Imagine reading a poem and believing it means one thing,
but the underlying message is something completely different. Authors like to use different literary
techniques to make a valid point, to make the reader feel a certain emotion, or even to share a
distinct memory with their reader. Poetry has helped authors focus their readers on their work by
achieving themes that may portrayed in several pieces of their work. In May Swenson's case, she
used a variety of techniques to create different emotions for the reader, while expressing certain
periods of her life. May Swenson uses nature in her poetry to personify sexuality and make it into a
repetitive theme in her work. Many of Swenson's critics can agree ... Show more content on

As Swenson tries to connect the little girl riding a horse to a more private and personal scene, it can
be agreed that she is using this as an allegory that creates the poem's theme. In addition to the
previous poem, Swenson also uses the same method to create and capture the same feeling and
emotion. In her poem "Sleeping with Boa," Swenson again uses a personified form of nature to
render her risky sexual theme. A perfect example of how she creates this image is when she states,
"She likes my stroking hand. And she even lets me kiss." Swenson successfully conceives a sexual
imagery while standing by a simplistic nature–based poem. "Jumping off the bed, she shows me her
behind," is a line that describes the boa leaving her owner and the owner showing admiration. This
erotic imagery expressed in her poem serves as a representation of recognition of desire and the
willingness the two characters express while they share that desire amongst themselves. There is a
connection between the two main characters, the narrator and its pet, which causes this to be
analyzed as a more sensual relationship rather than the ordinary pet/owner relationship. Swenson
uses the boa, a reptile which is often feared by many, to show that even something so powerful can
be delicate when it comes to a relationship like this. It is almost as if she would like that fear to be
forgotten and

Ancient Greek Centaurs: The Monster's Body
It frolics in the woods of the legendary Mount Pelion in Greece, it marches on the wide green fields
above Aslan's stone tablet in Narnia, and it hunts in the damp darkness of the Forbidden Forest at
Hogwarts. It has appeared throughout history and across oceans, a resilient beast which is half–
horse, half–human. Because of its pervasiveness, it is an ideal tool for analyzing human societies
and relationships. As one of the most familiar Greek monsters on the planet, its name is easily
recognizable by many people all over the world: the centaur.
Centaurs are massive human–horse hybrids. They inherit the physical traits of both species of which
they are made up. Their horse bodies grant them extraordinary speed and strength, and their human

These reincarnations are consistent with another of Cohen's theories, "The Monster Always
Escapes" (Cohen 4). However, most modern representations of centaurs are not rowdy and savage
like Greek centaurs; instead, they are associated with nobility and wisdom. The reason for this is
that humans' relationships with horses have changed over the centuries, which in turn changed the
way humans portray centaurs. Back in Ancient Greece, horses were primarily used in wartime,
which made most people learn to fear them. On the other hand, nowadays horses are used more for
sport and art, and are admired for their grace, speed, and strength. This transformation has
significantly altered how people view centaurs, and it has cemented the centaur's place in human
culture as a peaceful symbol of knowledge and fairness. It is also important to note the effect that
Christianity had on the centaur, which transformed its physical image from that of the Grecian
savage to the modern figure. In Ancient Greece, centaurs fought with rocks and sticks and other
natural objects, contributing to their barbarism. However, with the rise of mounted archery during
the medieval era, when Christianity was very influential, centaurs started to appear in literature with
bows and arrows, which soon became their signature weapons. Christianity also adopted the centaur
as an example of how a desire

The object of his image always was a life of intellectuals; he was well familiar with life and habits

It is also worth noting that Peter is an example of an explicit image of the narrator. Despite the lack
of self–presentation and the fact that we learn his name only in the second chapter, the constant use
of the pronoun "I" indicates this.
But in that novel there are two of the narrators. In several chapters of the novel, where describes
imaginary mythical scenes involving George Caldwell, the explicit narrator is absent. Instead there
is an objective narrator. He is dissolved in the text, he is impersonal, and he has no name. He is
omnipresent. Precisely it is closest to the author, because, despite the fact that the narrator is not
involved in the story, he is the author of evaluative judgments about the characters.
For example, wondering about George Caldwell, he says that George was professional in his field
and gives him other flattering epithets. Another example, when he described the body of Caldwell as
"tall and handsome." From this we can judge about the author's positive attitude to this character.
We should also talk about the time of the narrative. Artistic time [художественное время] is a
sequence of events in the specification. Different types of mismatch temporal order of the narrative
with a temporary order of story is called anachronism according to Gérard Genette. There are two
types of anachrony, but in the novel is only present analepsis. Genette called so any

but the main way the Sagittarius is thought of is as Chiron, a centaur. Chiron is the son of Cronus

Red Figure Vase Painting Analysis
The Terracotta Kalpis/Hydria (Water Jar) with Achilles and Penthesilea was created by the berlin
painter circa 500 B.C. towards the end of the Archaic period which lasted from circa 600 B.C–480
B.C. During this period Greek city states capitalized on trade expansion. The increase in trading
created a much wealthier society and people. As a result of this, art gained a newfound appreciation;
because more people could afford to spend money on luxuries art became esteemed and a new way
to compete to showcase one's wealth. This caused artists to start signing their works in order to

In addition to the characters, one can also find remnants of the Greek key pattern along with other
various symbols along the gilt wreath that creates the platform for the narrative. However, in
comparison to the Terracotta Neck Amphora with the Battle between Herakles and the Centaur
Nessos there is a significant lack of detail and extravagancy in the overall iconography. This can be
seen not only in the elaborate floral and curvilinear detailing of the registers but also, in the sheer
numbers of registers themselves. The Terracotta Neck Amphora with the Battle between Herakles
and the Centaur Nessos paid close attention to detail and displayed a clear value for extravagance.
The Terracotta Kalpis/Hydria (Water Jar) with Achilles and Penthesilea on the other hand, has only
one register that highlights a very dramatic story like and places immediate focus on the narrative.
It's important to note the layer of space at play in this piece portrayed by the overlapping of legs and
bodies. The characters of the vase consist of Penthesilea, the queen of the Amazons who was
fighting for the Trojans in the Trojan war, and acclaimed Greek hero Achilles. The scene depicts the
end of a battle in which Achilles kills Penthesilea. However, as he looks her in the eyes in her last

Centaurus Research Paper in 40 Characters

  • 1. Centaurus Research Paper The constellation I have chosen is Centaurus! Centaurus is of course a bright constellation that belongs in the southern sky and is considered to be one of the largest constellations. Of course because of its position in the Milky Way, it contains several very bright stars and to add to this, its beta and alpha star are used to find the constellation Crux, this constellation has a magnitude of 6.5 and 281 stars and with the magnitude of 6.5 makes it visible to the unaided eye. I chose this constellation because I find it the most interesting and I find it absolutely beautiful, we have so much left to discover about this constellation. Well in Greece, the Centaurus of course hence the name represents a Centaur or Ixionidae, this creature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Dante And Virgil's Death Dante and Virgil came across shattered rocks and their path is blocked by Infamy of Crete disguised as a cow. Infamy of Crete was considered as a monster, with attention to having a man's body and a head of a bull. This monster was known as Minotaur. In order to have a safe passage, they had to make it pass Minotaur. With this in mind, Virgil provoked the monster by insulting him. Abruptly asking, who brought death upon him and screaming go away beast. The breaking point was when Virgil said that Dante is only there to see his suffering. Minotaur was filled with anger and broke loose. Unable to run, the monster jumped back and forth giving Dante and Virgil a safe path across. As the two climb down further, they noticed a stream of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Centaurs Research Paper Centaurs are mythical creatures born with the torso, head and arms of a man and the rest of the body of a horse. Most centaurs are known for always being drunk and violent. They usually would drink too much wine which would cause them to start conflicts with others, hurting people mostly women. But not all the centaurs were bad, Chiron was one of the wise and more civilized centaurs. He was known for his ability to treat people with his experience with medicine, he also taught others how to hunt for food using bow & arrows. The centaurs were originally from the mountains and forests of Magnesia which is part of the same region of Thessaly, Greece. They had good resources living by the water, they were able to bath and hunt for food. They also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... King Pirithous of the lapiths, son of Ixion, had invited the centaurs to his wedding. Then the centaurs had come to the wedding and got drunk and disorderly and pursued the Lapith women. One of the centaurs even tried running off with the king's bride. That's when a fierce battle had erupted between them. To defend themselves the centaurs had used tree trunks and slabs of boulder as weaponries, but ultimately the lapiths won the fight, killing many centaurs. After the battle was finally over the lapiths had order and forced them to leave out of Thessaly. Centaurus himself is the offspring of Ixion who had made love Hera. Ixion had abused his pardon by trying to seduce Zeus's wife, Hera. So Zeus had made a cloud substitute of her, by which Ixion had mated and became the father of Centaurus, who fathered all of the centaurs by the mares of Mount Pelion. Ixion basically had betrayed Zeus which made him mad, so Zeus had punished him and sent him to hell. There were centaurs in the movie The Chronicles of Narnia they had a big battle with the White witch and the Telmarines. In the book Percy Jackson– the Lighting Thief, Percy had seen centaurs drunk outside of his train's window running wild. They were just a handful of trouble in all of the movies and books. They were not the nicest creatures to be around you'd probably be dead or in some trouble messing around with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Analyse On The Painting : Hercules Killing The Centaur Nessus Analyse on the Painting "Hercules Killing the Centaur Nessus" Last week I had the opportunity to have one of the the most exciting opportunity that I could have so far, I went to visit "The Museum of Art, Houston". For the first, I could better understand why I am taking Huma class, and while there I could apply all the knowledge that I have been acquiring throughout this semester. While I was seeing the pieces of art, the analyst part of me started coming out of my mind. All the methods on how to analyse made sense. I saw different paintings and sculptures, from egyptians art to greek. However, There was a painting that stood out of all arts that i had seen that day, which is the painting made by Sebastiano Rucci, a beautiful illustration how Hercules killing the centaur Nessus. Although from the story I used to watch as child, I had the image of Hercules as a hero and never questioned about how Hercules is perceived from the people, up to now. The Hercules I used be amazed for, is different from what I used to imagine, and it goes from physical appearance to how I observe the painting picture. In my mind, I always thought Hercules huge guy, big hair and hero, of course. For me the world revolved around those sort of hero's, and I desired to be like Hercule. However, this image of a perfect man sorf of disappeared and that the world was all about gods and that there were different god for everything. According to the painting information it represents a story from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Personal Narrative Essay: The Kidd "I'm trying," the Kidd snarled. "But this miserable bird wants to put his tail feathers in my face." I looked over and the macaw was now pacing across his forehead. Captain Bluebird roared with laughter as I continued to ferociously kick and beat at the sea with my legs and fists using the last of my strength to reach the shore. * * * We collapsed on the dark sand under the light of the silvery moon gasping for air and trembling with exhaustion. Then once Captain Bluebird had regained his strength, he built a small blaze. "Gordok summoned that monster from the deep to murder you," he said, sitting next to me. I watched the orange sparks from the fire curl and twist into the starry sky. Not sure why he wanted me know this, unless he needed me to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I'd skidded to a stop, my left sneaker just barely missing the front spokes. I hadn't touched it. I hadn't even really breathed on it, I don't think, yet the cycle began to teeter. Wobble. To tremble and to shake apart. One minute it was an aluminum road racer the next a heap of tiny gears and cogs littering the pavement. I'm not exactly sure why, but I think it was my fault. Or there was the time I'd cut Miss Wee–Wee's grass and accidently on purpose mowed straight through a patch of her prized pink petunias. I could've gone on and on, but I decided to put the brakes on self–loathing. "What about my dad and Grandpa?" "They're of the same line." He winked at me. "Tomorrow, you and Mason must go and find the centaurs. They will help you to understand how to defeat Gordok and save our kingdom." "Do the centaurs look like men with a horse's hindquarter?" Mason whispered. "I mean do they have tails and hooves?" Captain Bluebird ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Women Are Cunning And Beast Like From The Waist They Are... With a riotous appetite. Down from the waist they are centaurs, Though woman all above. But to the girdle do the gods inherit; Beneath is all the fiend's. There's hell, there's darkness [4.6.121–125] Why call women centaurs? Aren't Centaurs male? This use of the word makes the passage lose all of its intended meaning. To justify the use of this word, readers jump to the easy conclusion that Lear is trying to say that women are cunning and beast–like or that analyzing this may be going a little too deep. But, if King Lear chooses to overlook the entire picture that surrounds centaurs, there will be those who choose to question his choice of words and his credibility; which weakens his plea for pity and tarnishes his image as the wronged father. By referring to his daughters as centaurs, he fails to take the history and the entire construct of centaurs and creates a very distorted image, unintentionally proving to himself and the audience that he is weakened, scared and undeserving of sympathy. With the use of one word, he has tarnished his image as a king and a wronged protagonist on many levels. To start, the history and etymology of the word needs to be taken into consideration. According to the OED, a centaur referred to "A member of a people of ancient Thessaly renowned for their skill with horses". The OED also mentions that that the Greeks coined this term to refer to a partnership that was not familiar to them; a partnership between man and horse that would become ... • 13. Scythian Women's Role In Greek Myth Amazons were mythic female warriors, who fought many male Greek heroes and supposedly some real ancient men. They are first mentioned in Homer's Iliad as Amazones antianeirai, but their part in Greek myth likely goes further back. They are one of the most prevalent subjects of Greek vase paintings, and they are commonly seen in murals, clay dolls, sculptures, and monuments of the ancient world. They were said to be fierce fighters, mainly with bows and javelins. Amazon's fighting was up to par with the male heroes they faced. They valued comradery, much like Greek hoplites. They are associated with land to the East of Greece, especially Scythia. The Ancient Greco–Roman world commonly believed Amazons were real women of the remote past, and some even thought Amazons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scythians were nomadic peoples of the steppes that thrived from the seventh century BCE to around CE 500. Scythian women lived much like the men (Mayor 2014, 10–11). Pomponius Mela (ca CE 43) says the women participated in war because the Scythians were so savage (3.34–35). Three out of four female graves of the steppes include weapons, which suggest they were warriors (Mayor 2014, 11). One fourth century female grave near ancient Tyras includes a skeleton with skull wounds and a bronze arrowhead in her knee; moreover, the grave's goods include a quiver, twenty bronze–tipped arrows with red–stripped wooden shafts, an armored leather belt with iron plates, and many 'commonly' female goods. Arrows are the most common weapon in female warrior graves. All evidence shows that armed women and men were buried the same (Mayor 2014, 64–66). Scythians were not Greeks, but they did interact often. Greeks saw them defiantly as other than them, not to mention female heroes were far from an actuality in Greek society. Amazons were popular in myth, but they were not meant to reflect a Greek conception of warfare ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Description, Function, Attribution, and Analysis of a... The durability of clay has brought forth an immense abundance of Greek pottery, a craft mastered by Athenian artists. Archeologists have found hundreds of varieties in creation, shape, function, style, and artwork in Archaic vases. The museum has been blessed with one of these priceless artifacts; it is the duty of this establishment to accumulate as much data as possible surrounding the vase. In first identifying technique, dimensions, and condition, as well as describing shape, ornament, and figural scenery, one may then begin to analyze the vase. This serves the general purpose of understanding where the artifact stands in Greek culture and history. Through the examination and research of figural scenes, it is then possible to compare ... This centaur differs from the first in that he faces away from the viewer; his bare back is exposed, and in his right hand he grasps the front of the spear. However, his left arm is open, exposing the palm of his left hand. The third centaur is bearded and is shown in profile. Facing the humans to his left, he stands on his hind legs, recoils in defense, and holds his spear behind his head with both hands. His left hand grasps the front of the spear, and his right hand grasps the back of the spear. To his right there is a small insect–like figure, with two sets of wing–pairs protruding from its upper section and legs jutting from its lower section. Of the human figures, the first is male and faces the two centaurs to the left of the viewer. Also lunging forward, he plants his front foot as the heel of his back foot rises. His hair is shorter than that of the centaurs, and he holds the Boeotian variation of the hoplite shield that covers his mouth and chin. This shield is decorated with the outline of a turtle. The restored condition of the body leaves his clothing, or lack thereof, indistinguishable. It is also hard to discern whether he or the character to his right is holding a sword, which is short and points downward. The next figure, also human, lunges in the opposite direction. • 17. Primo Levi's Quaestio De Centauris Primo Levi's "Quaestio de Centauris" centers on Trachi the centaur and his relationship with the narrator. Between these two characters, a friendship forms: Living together causes them to grow up with each other. They must come to terms with the reality of the world and this realization hits at a climactic moment, and here we see a great shift occur. One day Trachi expresses that he has feelings for Terese, a family friend of the narrators, but later the narrator goes away and has sex with Terese. Trachi, being a centaur, is made aware of this encounter because he receives a pang of anxiety anytime a sexual encounter occurs in the vicinity. Not only does this event cause their relationship to break, but with it the entire trajectory of the story changes. The narrator doesn't just begin at the beginning of Trachi's life or his friendship with the narrator. Instead, he starts with the origin of the species themselves. Within a sort of book of Genesis, we see how the species began. This telling of this story allows the narrator to display his credibility and show that he believes in the centaurs and carries a deep understanding of them. This sort of start gives him time to win over his listeners. The narrator has specifically chosen to tell this story "Ab ovo," in order to start with the beginning of time and work from there. This choice tells something about the narrator. This decision allows the speaker to gain our trust before breaking the news that he is actually a terrible person that betrays his friend. Had he chosen to start with the story about going off in the woods to sleep with Terese, we would see him as more of a villain than by beginning innocently with the origin. • 21. The Mythology Of Greek Mythology There are many different types of different creatures of Greek Mythology. There are Centaurs, Minotaur, Pegasus, Sirens, Medusa, and many more. These creatures can either be helpful to the Gods and Goddesses or they can work against them. Some of the creatures' stories even intertwine with the stories of the Gods and Goddesses of Greek mythology. I will concentrate on the following creatures: Centaurs, Pegasus, Sirens, and Medusa. My favorite creatures out of all of these are the Sirens, because I think that they were beautiful creatures with an evil side about that. I will explain what they are, where they came from, and the different myths about them. Centaurs are half–man and half–horse. There are many different myths as to how the Centaur was born. One myth, the most popular one that has different stories around it, is that Ixion raped Hera, the wife of Zeus. Zeus did not believe Hera when she told him this so Zeus made a cloud (Nephele) that looked like Hera to lay with Ixion to see if it would happen again and this was how the Centaurs were born. Much to everyone's surprise, there are female centaurs and they are said to be of great beauty. Centaurs can either be described as wild and bold creatures or as savages. They are said to be the first man race to inhabit the forest of Thessaly. They are also sometimes called beasts, because of how they looked. These creatures are featured in the movie Percy Jackson: The Lighting Thief, and many like it. Now and days we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Portrayal Of Centaurs In Ancient And Modern Literature he Portrayal of Centaurs in Ancient and Modern Literature Commonly characterized as a mythological creature containing the upper half of a human and the lower half of a horse, Merriam– Webster defines a centaur as the following: "any of a race of creatures fabled to be half human and half horse and to live in the mountains of Thessaly" ("Centaur"). But how did the conception of a centaur first occur? What and where is its origin? And what about centaurs has captured the attention of people for hundreds of years? Many scholars, both modern and ancient, have debated over the origin and role of centaurs, and have come up with conclusions ranging from descendance from Gods to the misinterpretation of a skilled horseback rider. However, these scholars, with a few exceptions, have come to the conclusion that most centaurs represent the wildness of life, animal desires, barbarism. From the ancient Library of Apollodorus, to J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter series, ancient and modern authors alike have written about centaurs in books and stories. This paper discusses the potential origins of centaurs, how their description developed over time, and their role in both Ancient Greek mythology and modern literature. Famous Malevolent Centaurs Eurytion Eurytion, the centaur responsible for causing the Centauromachy, depicts the violent, sexual nature of centaurs. He is the reason Levi spends much of this story detailing the history of Centaurs. Then Trachi links us to the person speaking. This story is a string of episodes all linked by Trachi, they are not linked by outside actions or causes. For example, the way that we get from the blacksmith to the veterinarian or the story of the great flood to the first centaur birth is Trachi. These moments are linked by this one person. However this story is not merely episodic, there is more to the story. Upon picking apart each individual episode, it becomes clear that these single events contain a more unified action. One example is the episode about the great flood. Once you pick apart this moment we can see how each episode contains a unified action. This instance begins by saying that an ark was built because a great flood was coming. Since everything died in the flood, the deceased formed a fertile mud around the earth, and this caused a great ecstasy where life and love sprung forth. This meant that new species could arise, like the centaur. By sectioning off each episode, the speaker is able to craft similar motifs within them. From the time the main character of "The Centaur" by May Swenson was ten years old, he became enthused by adventure. He was invested himself in all that could be in the world despite obstacles. Swenson utilizes language, imagery, structure, and point of view to illustrate the main character's thought process as he explores his mental capacity and physical being. Tying in the mystical background of the title, "The Centaur," the author uses imagery to drive the contents of the poem. The poem begins with the main character longingly reminiscing on a naïve stage of his life: "The summer that I was ten – Can it be there was only one summer that I was ten? He basks in the glory of his younger years, and longs for a time when he was oblivious to all of the evils of the world. Containing many simple phrases, the structure of the poem brings an airy vibe to the mystical imagery. "My teeth bared as we wheeled and swished through the dust again. I was the horse and the rider, and the leather I slapped to his rump spanked my own behind," reads the poem. Descriptive verbs allow the reader to see the character's movements. This sculpture relief signifies the classic battle of good versus evil. Time and time again, benevolent heroes find themselves in a struggle to combat worthy yet malicious adversaries. The Roman sarcophagus, a two by five feet marble coffin, is certainly no exception. It represents another division to this timeless good–evil epic, its visual characteristics, emphasis on contrasts, and its extensive array of details give it an identity that is uniquely its own. It portrays a sense of legendary fantasy to the viewer, one pertaining to hostility, violence, and pure anger. The sculpture seems overly shallow due to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the colors seem out of place. The variation in color may be a result of the author emphasizing certain areas of the sculpture. Most notably, the artist selects to present the sculpture in three–dimensions, using this technique to accentuate and magnify the combatants and their physical attributes. Certain parts of these dimensions seem to stick right out at you, giving the viewer a good impression of the violence and hatred of war. Interestingly, instead of four, only three sides of the Sarcophagus are filled with images. The long section illustrates two Greek heroes, presumably Herakles and Iolaos, battling evil centaurs. The two other sections show a centaur attacking a lioness and the other, the representation of peace in this work, two centaurs getting along. Herakles and Iolaos are highlighted by the artist's careful attention to make them protrude the greatest, accentuating their impact and overall importance in this sculpture. Every powerful muscle in their bodies is portrayed and given detail in three dimensions. The three–dimensions not only bring these characters closer to reality but also heighten the heroic nature, masculinity, and belligerent attitude of the Greek heroes. Instead of using basic geometric shapes to create works of art, the sculptor chooses to increase the detail in the Sarcophagus by giving everything in the sculpture individual characteristics and traits. The individual tiles are more apparent when viewed closely. This gives the piece a grainy and earthy texture, where it physically looks bumpy. The textbook says it has foreshortening, the illusion created on a flat surface in which figures and objects appear to recede or project sharply into space. The second piece was drawn with tempera on parchment. This makes the piece look smooth, flat, and two dimensional. The next element is color. The hues in both pieces are relatively earth toned. Nergal is a centaur–like creature firing an arrow from a bow. He's usually portrayed with a pair of wings and two heads – one of a human and one of a panther. He also typically has a scorpio's sting at the end of the horse tail. In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is portrayed as a centaur, a hlaf–human and a half– horse. In Harry's second year at Hogwarts, the basilisk of Salazar Slytherin terrorizes the school and manages to petrify a few students. In Harry's world, basilisks are born when a chicken egg is hatched beneath a toad and the first to have accomplished this was a Greek wizard named Herpo the Foul. The basilisk is one of the most famous mythical beasts and appeared in legends all throughout the centuries, beginning with writings by the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus. Most commonly, the basilisk is described as the king of serpents, possesses the ability to kill with a single glance and is born the same way J. K. Rowling describes it in Harry Potter – when a toad or a snake hatches the egg of a chicken. It is also often said that basilisks can petrify with its gaze. Legends say that a bird (the rooster ... As Hagrid describes them as "ruddy stargazers" (Rowling, 2014, 273), Centaurs look up at the stars to read the future, which reflects the legend of Chiron. While centaurs do not use wands for magic, they are skilled in magical healing, divination, archery and astronomy, traits that are identical to those of the original Greek mythological centaurs. Firenze's choice to become a teacher at Hogwarts, as well as his mentor–like personality, is similar to the myth of Chiron (cf. Colbert, 2008, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of May Swenson's Poem 'The Centaur' May Swenson's Common Denominator Imagine reading a poem and believing it means one thing, but the underlying message is something completely different. Authors like to use different literary techniques to make a valid point, to make the reader feel a certain emotion, or even to share a distinct memory with their reader. Poetry has helped authors focus their readers on their work by achieving themes that may portrayed in several pieces of their work. In May Swenson's case, she used a variety of techniques to create different emotions for the reader, while expressing certain periods of her life. May Swenson uses nature in her poetry to personify sexuality and make it into a repetitive theme in her work. Many of Swenson's critics can agree ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Swenson tries to connect the little girl riding a horse to a more private and personal scene, it can be agreed that she is using this as an allegory that creates the poem's theme. In addition to the previous poem, Swenson also uses the same method to create and capture the same feeling and emotion. In her poem "Sleeping with Boa," Swenson again uses a personified form of nature to render her risky sexual theme. A perfect example of how she creates this image is when she states, "She likes my stroking hand. And she even lets me kiss." Swenson successfully conceives a sexual imagery while standing by a simplistic nature–based poem. "Jumping off the bed, she shows me her behind," is a line that describes the boa leaving her owner and the owner showing admiration. This erotic imagery expressed in her poem serves as a representation of recognition of desire and the willingness the two characters express while they share that desire amongst themselves. There is a connection between the two main characters, the narrator and its pet, which causes this to be analyzed as a more sensual relationship rather than the ordinary pet/owner relationship. Swenson uses the boa, a reptile which is often feared by many, to show that even something so powerful can be delicate when it comes to a relationship like this. It is almost as if she would like that fear to be forgotten and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ancient Greek Centaurs: The Monster's Body It frolics in the woods of the legendary Mount Pelion in Greece, it marches on the wide green fields above Aslan's stone tablet in Narnia, and it hunts in the damp darkness of the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts. It has appeared throughout history and across oceans, a resilient beast which is half– horse, half–human. Because of its pervasiveness, it is an ideal tool for analyzing human societies and relationships. As one of the most familiar Greek monsters on the planet, its name is easily recognizable by many people all over the world: the centaur. Centaurs are massive human–horse hybrids. They inherit the physical traits of both species of which they are made up. Their horse bodies grant them extraordinary speed and strength, and their human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These reincarnations are consistent with another of Cohen's theories, "The Monster Always Escapes" (Cohen 4). However, most modern representations of centaurs are not rowdy and savage like Greek centaurs; instead, they are associated with nobility and wisdom. The reason for this is that humans' relationships with horses have changed over the centuries, which in turn changed the way humans portray centaurs. Back in Ancient Greece, horses were primarily used in wartime, which made most people learn to fear them. On the other hand, nowadays horses are used more for sport and art, and are admired for their grace, speed, and strength. This transformation has significantly altered how people view centaurs, and it has cemented the centaur's place in human culture as a peaceful symbol of knowledge and fairness. It is also important to note the effect that Christianity had on the centaur, which transformed its physical image from that of the Grecian savage to the modern figure. In Ancient Greece, centaurs fought with rocks and sticks and other natural objects, contributing to their barbarism. However, with the rise of mounted archery during the medieval era, when Christianity was very influential, centaurs started to appear in literature with bows and arrows, which soon became their signature weapons. Christianity also adopted the centaur as an example of how a desire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Despite the lack of self–presentation and the fact that we learn his name only in the second chapter, the constant use of the pronoun "I" indicates this. Instead there is an objective narrator. He is dissolved in the text, he is impersonal, and he has no name. He is omnipresent. Precisely it is closest to the author, because, despite the fact that the narrator is not involved in the story, he is the author of evaluative judgments about the characters. For example, wondering about George Caldwell, he says that George was professional in his field and gives him other flattering epithets. Another example, when he described the body of Caldwell as "tall and handsome." From this we can judge about the author's positive attitude to this character. Red Figure Vase Painting Analysis The Terracotta Kalpis/Hydria (Water Jar) with Achilles and Penthesilea was created by the berlin painter circa 500 B.C. towards the end of the Archaic period which lasted from circa 600 B.C–480 B.C. During this period Greek city states capitalized on trade expansion. The increase in trading created a much wealthier society and people. As a result of this, art gained a newfound appreciation; because more people could afford to spend money on luxuries art became esteemed and a new way to compete to showcase one's wealth. This caused artists to start signing their works in order to receive recognition because of their new value and importance in society. In addition to the characters, one can also find remnants of the Greek key pattern along with other various symbols along the gilt wreath that creates the platform for the narrative. However, in comparison to the Terracotta Neck Amphora with the Battle between Herakles and the Centaur Nessos there is a significant lack of detail and extravagancy in the overall iconography. This can be seen not only in the elaborate floral and curvilinear detailing of the registers but also, in the sheer numbers of registers themselves. The Terracotta Neck Amphora with the Battle between Herakles and the Centaur Nessos paid close attention to detail and displayed a clear value for extravagance. The Terracotta Kalpis/Hydria (Water Jar) with Achilles and Penthesilea on the other hand, has only one register that highlights a very dramatic story like and places immediate focus on the narrative. It's important to note the layer of space at play in this piece portrayed by the overlapping of legs and bodies. The characters of the vase consist of Penthesilea, the queen of the Amazons who was fighting for the Trojans in the Trojan war, and acclaimed Greek hero Achilles. The scene depicts the end of a battle in which Achilles kills Penthesilea. However, as he looks her in the eyes in her last fleeting seconds of life, he falls in love ...
