• Met Mr Kim who is coming to USA and will call me

• Worked out train schedules in sign language
• Street Car to Bomb Site/Peace Park
• Walked park in rain (57F). Museum Closed
• Bus to RxR (someone paid 50yen for each bus trip)
• Met Submarine Cap’t from WW II on Bullet train #1
• Two Bullet trains (19100Yen) Ended in Fuji Station
• Hotels closed. Slept 3-4am in Train Station (Raining)
• Ate only 3 oranges, Nuts, Raisins, Candy, Juice today

• Slept 3hrs Until Dawn– Rained pretty hard all night
• Tried to get a bus tour with Sign Language (S/L)
• Hoshino appeared Speaking English. Helped buy
ticket to Tokyo & invited me to eat at his house
• Met his wife, Kyoco. Ate big breakfast there. Bath
in deep tub. Used traditional Japanese toilet.
• Uncle Nozawa & son, Terruaka drove me up Mt Fuji
• Toured temples . Ate lunch near top of Fuji
• Looked at photos from his trip to USA @ his house
Walked to RxR with Terruaka. Caught train @ 525p

• Cruised through Gaku Gei Dai Gaku suburbs
• Mac really knows his way around here.
• He was a draft dodger who left Baltimore, USA and
lives here now wheeling & dealing.
• A real Free Spirit – Child of the Universe !
• We ate @ McDonald’s
and went back to his place

about Life, Karma, the Orient, …,

• Toured Tokyo with Mac. Mailed stuff home by ship

• All of us walked to YMCA & got beds for $5.50/night

• China tour was “full” but he got me on it.
• Walked Kowloon 4 hrs w Robin. Unable to fit in a side
trip to Thailand and still get into China.
• 2p Bus tour of HK Island, Victoria Peak, Beach, Boat ride
on Aberdeen Bay. It’s a World Trade Center
• Met Jay Seymour (Alaska) @ MacDonald’s. Walked
streets, rode subway under water & ferry back
• Washed clothes. Met Bob McGinnes (Kodak)
• YMCA for the night

• Bus tour to China border thru Kowloon
• Rickshaw Ride. Picked up tailor-made Safari Jacket
• Ate at supermarket. Changed money @ a bank.
• Mailed souvenirs home at Post Office.
• Walked to Train Station. Reworked Pan Am itinerary.
• New Plan for Bahrain without having a Visa
• Walked more miles. Bus back to YMCA

• Photographed Sunrise in Bahrain
• Bus to Manama: met driver, Narendran from India
• He dropped me off at each of 8 stops to walk
around, then picked me up on his next round.
• Spent evening & night with him after his work.
• Stayed w him in Indian Compound
• Dinner and Cinema with English subtitles
• Bath & washed clothes
• Hospital to examine my swollen lips (was a reaction
to Quinine Pills I took weekly). Got a shot there
• Dropped me at Airport at 01325am
49. May 15 Thursday (Cairo)
• MS 865 (707) 1800 miles Bahrain to Cairo, Egypt
• Got thru customs first and signed up w Green Valley
tours. Got Room & full tour Package for $200 (L280)
• Paid L125 for 5 tours & 2 Sleeper RxR to/from Luxor
• Left one bag in office and started touring @9am
• Tour 1= King Tut Exhibit@ Cairo Museum, Bazaar
Ripoffs & driving thru Cairo until 3pm
• Tour 2= Pyramids (Paid guard on camel to let me
climb to top of Cheops, alone) 13 using timer
took 3 minutes up the corner opposite Sphinx.
• Climbed down. Camel Ride L5. RxR @ 7p slept in
seat. Dinner on route to Luxor
54. I set the timer on my
Pentax SLR and ran up
to do handstands. Did
about 13 but only
caught four well enough
to post here. Couldn’t
know how they turned
out until I developed
the film 4 weeks later.
55. May 16 Friday (Luxor)
• Overnight Train (12hrs) Cairo to Luxor – Arr 830am
• No Green Valley tour guide, so tourist police
arranged a buggy to Nile for me. Called tour Co.
from a hotel & Guide, McHagagy met me there 10a.
• Tour 3=Ferry boat & Valley of Kings: Tut & Ramsey
VI, Hatshepsut Tombs. Ferry and lunch
• Tour 4= Karnek (Ramsey II) & Luxor Temples via
horse&buggy; Lunch/Dinner@ New Winter Hotel
• Back to RxR: Left for Cairo at 1030p on Sleeper.

• Watched Sunrise in Cairo

• Cairo – Tel Aviv @noon
• Met Sheila Simpson & rented car together
• Picked up 2 Israeli Soldiers – on way to Jerusalem
64. • Drove to Dead Sea in dark but stopped by 3 Patrols
• Showed US Passports to get thru.
• Drove back to Tel Aviv (TLV) but flight to Turkey was
canceled. My car was towed but we got it back
• Drove to Mediterranean Beach then back to TLV 3a
May 19 Monday TLV to Roma AZ 737 (707)
• Returned car (380km 21.5 liters)
• Unable to sail from Haifa to Istanbul so rescheduled
a flight on Al Italia to Roma in 1 hour. Made it @ 6p
• 1500 miles in 3 hrs. Arr Roma 6p

PhD in Roma. We walked Roma/he
bought Dinner. He called me in 1990.

Post Cards I bought here. Back thru
Customs and onto same Plane. A huge
African Woman had my seat. Got her
to change seats and we took off again.

Marco Site on my own in Evening.
• Gave guide, Joe, $100 to buy me a
Train Ticket to Nairobi from
Mombasa for tomorrow
• Malindi was closed at 5pm
101. • Found a phone in a travel agency but no one spoke
English. Called the San Marco Italians but could
barely understand them. They sent a car to pick me
up, but it was 2 hours late due to Flat Tire.

106. May 28 – After the tour on the Texas Site Launch Pad, the San
Marco guys got me to Mombasa on time to meet the tour
again and take that train back to Nairobi. I walked around
Mombasa a while and bought some souvenirs. Then I gave Joe
the tour guide money to return to that hotel he was in and
find my special shirt that he left there. It was a wash & wear
(big deal back in 1980). Sleeper Train back to Nairobi.

Flew PAN AM 191: Nairobi (NBO) Lagos – Abidjan,
Ivory Coast – Monrovia Liberia (my friend Nicolle got
off here) – Dakar, Senegal (Short Transits again)
May 30 Friday: Arrived in JFK at 6am
Called my Cousin, Mike Desimone and reconfirmed
my next flight to Buenas Aires for Evening (PA Office
said no Visa required, so I canceled my flight at
10am to Caracus. Asked Mike to pick me up and he
did. Took me to have lunch with family

113. May 30:
So, when I got to JFK they told me I did need a Visa even to
Transit thru Argentina, and they would not let me on that
flight to Buenos Aires. With one day left on the Passport 30
the farthest I could go was to Los Angeles.
Caught the last flight of the day to LAX and planned a way to
get to South America on route. Had to use the reservation
schedule booklet onboard and make reservations in LAX.
One connection to Miami was a standby, but as I was exiting
the plane in Houston, they called up standbys and so, I made
it through New Orleans to Miami.
Met Diane and Harry Jones.
2hrs in MIA was enough time to catch PA445 to Caracus
(CCS), Venezuela.

so they would not let me

115. Sunday June 1, 1980
Spent most of the day working with
Pan Am reps in CCS to get on a flight
back to USA. Finally got the last seat
on PA 442 which was late and had
mechanical issues. Met Ehjan Hemnat
from Iran, whose brother is a GSFC
Contractor?! We flew to Miami on
PA442, then to Altlanta on EA452.
Ehjan had trouble getting his Big Red
Bag off EA452 in Atlanta (ATL).
I flagged down EA 452 (8300) and
pulled his bag out of Cargo for him,
before it took off. Flew to BWI
on EA434 (727) and arrived 0207 on
Monday June 2. Met my Dad at BWI.
