Q1 –
In what ways does your
media product use, develop
or challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
Still 1 - Magazine advert
• In the magazine advert we chose to use a close up image
because this is a common convention for
singer/songwriters as it shows their emotions; vulnerability
which helps the audience to connect with the artist.
Allowing the audience to feel closer to the artist and have a
connection makes them able to relate to the
song/video/artist as they don't feel intimidated by their star
persona.
•
We chose to emphasize the contrast of the red lips to
signify love and passion as this not only links in with the
lyrics but emphasis on colour appears to be common on
magazine adverts as it allows certain meaning to be
emphasized and in this case love and passion.
•
The writing we chose to use was decided after thorough
research to ensure the font style fit in with the genre and
the artist, we decided to go for a more bolder font to
emphasis and make clear what we wanted to say as some
magazine adverts such as Taylor Swift Red had fronts
similar to this while most had handwritten styles but we
though this font is more suitable and relevant to us.
Still 2 – Digi -pak
• We decided to have a range of tones and colours to
our digi-pak as this is something we gathered from
our research' especially from Lucy Rose's digi-pak
but also because we though it added more emotion
into the digi-pak and made it a little different from
others as we agree with Goodwin about having
links but we do think that there should be a little
diversity between artists.
•
We chose to keep the front cover of the digi-pak
and the magazine advert the same to help us create
a brand images but also for familiarity so that the
audience find it easy to recognise as this was also a
common convention when seeing the brand image
of an artist as a whole (digi-pak, magazine advert,
music video and any other merchandise).
•
We chose to use a couple of location shots on the
digi-pak to keep the continuity with the music video
and to keep the link between the lyrics and the
visuals so again it is easy to recognise and to add to
the naturalistic theme of our artist again helping to
create a brand identity.
Still 3 - Mid close up
• We chose to use this shot along with the effect of a double
mirror to show her split emotions and personality and she
transforms depending on her environment; her friends and her
family as you can hear with through the lyrics through the song
relating to Goodwin’s theory. By using the split mirror we
decided it made our music video a little different as this is
something we had not seen in our music video research, helping
to make ours stand out and that a little difference is good.
•
By brightening the lighting and adding a slight blue tone to the
scene helped us to represent and portray the emotions as blue
signifies sadness and this is her particular emoticon and this
point in the song. Making sure we emphasized the emoticons
was important as this is a common convention in music videos to
ensure the audience understands the song. Also in our chosen
genre mid close up shots are very important and popular as they
help show the artists emoticon again allowing the audience to
connect with them.
•
We had the background and her clothing dark to make sure we
kept the emphasis on her face and therefor her emoticons as we
found out that during close up shots of the artists (manly whilst
performing) it was very minimalistic keeping all of the attention
on the artist, the lyrics and her emoticons helping to add to the
effect given on the audience.
Still 4- Location shot
• Due to our artist being a singer songwriter we
decided to use a lot of location shots as this seemed
to be a common convention in music videos,
especially those of Lucy Rose and more so in our
music video as it linked in with the lyrics again making
a strong emphasis on Goodwin’s theory.
•
The use of the castle along with the artist walking
away from it was one of the key links in our music
video as the use of the castle was very important due
to its representation of a house as the castle is a ruin
which again represents her emoticons as she is torn
between her emoticons and love for her family but
also her friends almost as though she doesn't know
where she belongs. The cold eeriness feeling to the
castle also helps portray her emoticons.
•
Representations through the location are seen
frequently in Lucy Rose's music video for example -
whenever there is a use of a location shot it is very
lonely and full of flowers which links in with the lyrics
'nobody knows' showing how she is alone as no one
know where she is or what feelings she is hiding
inside to herself.
Still 5- Slow motion
• We used slow motion to emphasise the running
away from her troubles and almost as though she
is running away from her emoticons but there is a
feeling of being lost as she doesn't know where to
go with her constantly looking back.
•
This shot links in with lyrics really well and is again
a common feature for a singer/songwriter music
video to add to the emoticons e.g. - 'where’s the
place you'd run to hide' this is a clear example of
our links between the lyrics and the visuals but
again linking in with the emoticons.
• The slow motion also links in with the pace of the
music video and therefor makes sure there is
continuity throughout as opposed to having her
sprint through the trees.
Still 6- Fade (Dissolve)
•
We decided to use 2 transactions
throughout the music video to keep it
continuity but also it was a very subtle
transition that helped to break it up but
also fit in perfectly to the genre as
opposed to using a cartoon effect for
instance.
•
Transactions are used throughout music
videos and they are good to link in when
there is a change of scenes of emoticons
and hence why we used it.
• We also particularly like the dissolve on
this part of the music video as the two
faces are a clear match in terms of the
place and therefor links in really well and
helps to make the transition smoother.
Still 7- Friendship Pyramid
• We used the effect of each layer coming in one
by one to emphasise the building of her home,
which is made of her friends where she feels
most comfortable which again links in with the
lyrics and the whole story of the music video
and the message were trying to get across.
•
Again the location used is natural and links in
with the rest of the video as it does in Lucy
Rose's music video making constant references
to nature and the outdoors.
• This shot also helped to add more of a story
line to our music video as a narrative was very
important for our genre and this scene helps us
with this as the message of the song is about
her friends so therefor by showing her with her
friends we link this in closely with the lyrics
which stated by Goodwin is very important.
Still 8 - Performance shots
•
Performance shots are key in music videos as
it is as much about the song and the lyrics as it
is about the instruments and performance and
in Lucy Roses music video there are a lot of
these as they help add to the recognition of
the song and the talent of the artist helping
the audience to understand the artist a bit
more.
•
Playing the piano is a key instrument in
singer/songwriter music videos as they go with
the genre and the subtle tones you can create
by using them but also the tension so
therefore it helps to add more emoticon into
the song as opposed to using the drums.

  • 1. Q1 – In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • 2.
