addition to his professional pursuits,
Redding, CT-based David Bohn supports
numerous nonprofit organizations,
including the ALS Association.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge became a
viral sensation in 2014 and prompted
millions of people worldwide to dump a
bucket of ice over their heads to help raise
awareness for the degenerative disorder
ALS. According to the ALS Association,
the campaign helped generate more than
$115 million, funds which it has put
toward patient and community services as
well as research in areas such as gene
discovery and drug development.

3. ALS
 More than 25 ALS genes have been
discovered throughout history, and five
of those have been discovered since the
first Ice Bucket Challenge.
The most recent breakthrough is the
discovery of the KIF5A gene, which
was made possible through a
collaborative effort between more than
250 researchers analyzing genetic data
from more than 101,000 samples.
KIF5A is a microtubule-based motor
protein that plays a crucial role in
motor neuron health. By discovering
the gene, researchers now have
another target for therapeutic drug
development. Other genes discovered
since the Ice Bucket Challenge began
include C21orf2, TBK1, NEK1, and
TUBA4A.
