3. About Downtown Evening Soup
Kitchen
Located in New Haven, DESK runs a number of
free direct food programs for the benefit of the
community. It serves free hot meals in the
evening, seven days a week, to poor and at-risk
individuals. It also runs a bag lunch program for
schoolchildren from disadvantaged backgrounds;
a food pantry, which dispenses bags of food to the
needy every Wednesday; an emergency food
bank to provide food for individuals, families, and
children in crisis; and a bi-weekly senior food
program distributing bags of food individually
designed for each senior guest's nutritional
requirements. The Yale School of Nursing
supervises the daily medical screening of all of
DESK's meals.
4. Conclusion
DESK organizes a number of fundraising
events to raise money for its mission. These
include an Annual Soup Night as well as
auctions and shows, the proceeds of which go
to DESK. It also provides the New Haven
community with numerous opportunities to
volunteer.
