OPENING NIGHT English Segment
Good evening everyone, thank you for coming. Before I begin my segment on English
education, I have to ask you a simple and basic question. Why is it important to learn English?
China is a very big country, which speaks Mandarin as a standard language, why should you take
the time and effort to learn a strange new language? There are many answers to that question but
only one reason. The world today is becoming smaller each day. As new technologies and
innovations are invented to help the whole world communicate with one another, and faster modes
of transportation made to connect us together, yes, the world is becoming a smaller place, and
China is no different. English is the international language of diplomacy, business,
science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, aviation, UN & NATO armed forces,
engineering, tourism, Hollywood films and arguably the best pop and rock music in the
world.Today in this world, there are 52 countries that use English as their official language and
many other countries that use English as their second language. English is an international
language and it acts as a common thread for people of different nations, it is a common mode or
tongue in which we can communicate. We need to know English to communicate effectively too
many developed countries. Do you know what a G8 country is? Do you know which country
is a G8 country? G8 is a term used to signify the countries with the largest and prosperous
economies. These countries include: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, US, Canada and Russia.
China trades with all of them. 3 of those countries speak English nationally and the others also
have the ability to communicate in English. So if you want or wished to be apart of China’s global
economic growth, then English should be your first step towards your goal. On the otherhand,
what if you don’t want to do international business and you know that you just want to stay in
China. Do you still think that English should be important? The answer is YES! Tourism in
China has expanded over the last few decades and is continuing to grow. China is one of the
world’s most- watched and hottest tourist markets! China was the 3rd
most visited country in the
world with over 55.98 million oversea tourists in 2010, which also created over 45.8 billion US
dollars, as foreign exchange income. That’s not all, China is expected to be the fastest growing
tourist location in the world from 2006-2015 and China is to become the largest tourist country
and among the largest for oversea travel by the year 2020. Now with so many foreigners visiting
and planning on visiting in the future, soon learning English will not just be important but it will
be required for you to be successful in China.
Our intentions are to prepare you for the world. We foster not just Chinese
leaders but global leaders. We provide you with the tools you need to adapt and overcome any
situation that involves the use of the English language. Whether it is tests, assignments or if you
just want to sharpen you English skills, we can help you achieve your goals. English is not
math, you cannot learn by just memorizing numbers, you must practice.
We focus on oral English education. Our teachers practice speaking with
our students, correcting and improving their pronunciation. It is still important to learn how to
read and write, but being able to read and write in English is not enough! (Try the “Usually”
example with a volunteer; also many students have problems pronunciating words and adding new
sounds like "new-uh or good-uh" and most Chinese need help knowing the difference between
he and she, because of the "ta" that is used for both girl and boy in China.....If you continually
speak the wrong way it will become habit and habits are hard to break.) Oral English is used in
the best careers, the best universities, and is increasingly being used at job interviews.
So
like it or not, English is a very important language to learn how to speak.
We teach every level of English. For students in pre-school, we begin by
introducing the younger kids to the English alphabet and numbers. For students from
elementary and middle school, we begin by introducing them to English words, and have
them read, repeat and understand. Later on students will be introduced to sentences as
their skills improve. Our key focus with beginners is pronunciation. So we prepare the
younger students to be able to read and understand the words from our specially
designed English books. Our books have been used for the last 4 years
and are very well-designed for elementary, middle/high-school and university students,
with our primary goal being to increase your overall knowledge of the English language,
whatever level you are. Also with our experienced English teachers we will be able to
help you in your learning process. Ladies and gentlemen, I will not lie to you, the English
language is not easy, and the English language contains around 500,000 to 1,000,000
words, but luckily you only have to learn 20,000 words to get by. I have often said that
there are two levels of English that can be achieved. One level of learning English is
enough for you to live. The other level of English can help you make friends. Whatever
level you want to achieve, our English institute can help you get there.
Now I know that most of you are University students, and I am happy to say that at
SDA, university students are our specialty. Here at SDA we provide 5 levels in learning
English for university students. At each level, you are taught “Essential English
expressions” and new words every week. As well, you practice English dialogues to
improve your reading and pronunciation skills. To challenge you we provide you with
substitution models to help you comprehend words and sentences. (Give example from
level one….Repeat after me…”I live in Seoul”,“I live in Beijing”,“I live in Canada”….now
if I say Yuxi, what do you say?....”I live in Yuxi”…right…If I say France….you would
say…?) Your English must be quick and precise and the only way of achieving that is
practicing short and easy sentences... At the beginning. Now most importantly we teach
you conversation skills. Through repetition and comprehension, we help you pronounce
and understand basic conversation sentences in the beginning. (Give example:”How are
you?”, “What is your name?” Why do you want to study English”?) As your English skills
improve, the more challenging the conversations will become. (Give examples from level
three…) We also help teaching you proper sentence structure, for example, in the
English language the sentence structure is subject/ verb/ object with the time/place
adjectives at the end of the sentence, while Chinese sentence structure has its adjectives
before the subject/verb/object. So teaching how to properly create sentences is one of
our main goals.
Some of my students know that when it comes to learning oral English I have certain
methods that can help. Write, read, listen and speak. One should write correct English
sentences as much as possible to understand correct sentence structure. One must
read as much as possible to see how a correct sentence is written. One should listen to
English conversation to understand how a correct sentence with correct pronunciation is
said, and finally one should speak as much English as possible because practice makes
perfect. All these methods are taught and used to sharpen your English skills.
There may be many reasons why you need to learn English, but the undeniable truth
is that English is the future of China, and our language institute will help you prepare and
be confident in that future, because fortune only favours the bold and the well-prepared.
