2. message&L.A.REPRESENTATION
"Jungle"s message in this music video is to demonstrate what society is like in the present-day world, focusing on
different ethnic backgrounds, different ages, different classes and different religions to give the audience an
interpretation of the many Sub-Cultures in Los Angeles.
It also over-stereotypes these cultures to imply that being different is not all "doom-and-gloom" and that
everybody is treated with equal respect in L.A. The shots are changed between beats in this video to add to the
message as well as to emphasize Goodwin's theory of telling the story through beats.
3. maleandfemalerepresentation
With so many people being featured in this video, it
is very difficult to count every single male and
female, however it does seem obvious that the
males have the more important roles, such as the
Priest or when the band are in the center of the
street.
What we do know, however, is that the band is male-
dominated with the 3 members of X ambassadors
(plus Jamie). This represents Mulvey's theory that
women are treated like objects to appeal more to a
male audience.
4. movement&costume
All the characters are doing many different things, but whether it
is celebrating, smoking, skating, walking, praying, singing e.t.c,
one theme is constant; happiness. There are a few scenes,
however, of slums, which are mentioned but not explored into
enough.
The people are dressed to be established into their particular
mise-en-scene and in their atmosphere for this to be more
realistic. For example, the Jewish people are dressed in
stereotypical Jewish clothes with top hats and knotted hair.
They probably don't always dress like this, however in the video
they are on their way to a Jewish Wedding, where it is likely
they would wear this. There is no over amount of skin being
shown by anyone, however it is obvious that the younger
generation are usually less-dressed than that of the older, more
religious, usually less ruthless characters.
5. PRODUCTS&items
Once again, the products in the video are used to
represent the character's background. For example,
the younger generation can be seen with bikes and
skateboard to show the stereotypical, extroverted
young people whereas the older generation are seen
as being more religious, for example the Jews are
doing "the Hora" to positively stereotype their
background even further.
Brand that can be shown include the "beats" brand on
the headphones which the lead singer can be seen
wearing. This is used to appeal to younger audiences.
6. miseenscene
There is a noticeable juxtaposition between the band
members (in the video which supports the star theory)
where they are usually in darker settings, like in the bar.
All the others have brightness involved, such as the
skate park and the church, to represent that their lives
are in a happy atmosphere and the band members act
like reporters on this city.
The camera uses all sorts of shots both on the setting
and on the characters, where they can be seen staring
into the camera and changing shot at every beat to the
song. These mid-shots on the characters look strong
and slightly vicious to demonstrate that this is their world
and we are looking in on it. The scenery-shots also
demonstrate the many backgrounds this city has.
7. conclusion
I picked this performance/narrative video because it is a fine example of how to
represent something in a positive light.
The video is edited with quick shots to make it seem that there is so much going
on in this area, The musicians also act very passionately over it, with the lead
singer putting his hand on his chest most of the time while singing to show his
devotion.
