The document provides information about COVID-19 including how it started, symptoms, severity, prevention methods, and what to do if infected. It began in China in late 2019 and has since spread worldwide. Common symptoms include fever, cough and difficulty breathing. Prevention methods discussed include frequent hand washing, social distancing, avoiding touching the face, and practicing respiratory hygiene like coughing into the elbow. The document also explains that most cases are mild but some can be severe, especially in vulnerable groups. It recommends seeking medical advice if symptoms develop.
3. Introduction
• Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious
disease caused by a newly discovered
coronavirus.
• It started in China in end 2019.
• As of March 23, more than 340,000 people have
contracted the virus worldwide, causing over
14,000 deaths.
• It belongs to a group of germs/ viruses that can
cause anything from simple cold to influenzas
• It probably spread from an animal- not yet sure
3
5. Coronaviruses can spread easily
• Coughing and sneezing without covering the
mouth can disperse droplets into the air.
• Touching or shaking hands with a person who
has the virus can pass the virus between
individuals.
• Making contact with a surface or object that
has the virus and then touching the nose,
eyes, or mouth.
5
6. How serious is it?
Most people infected will experience mild to moderate
respiratory illness and recover without requiring special
treatment.
It can cause serious illness in
• Older people,
• those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer ,
• pregnant women and
• those with low immunity ( HIV infection, chemotherapy,
radiation, steroid treatment etc.)
6
7. Stage of severity
Rough percentage of
people with COVID-19
Mild disease from which a person can
recover
More than
80%
Severe disease, causing breathlessness
and pneumonia
Around 14%
Critical disease, including septic shock,
respiratory failure, and the failure of
more than one organ
About 5%
Fatal disease 2%
7
8. Symptoms
Cold- or flu-like symptoms usually set in from 2–4 days after a coronavirus
infection and are typically mild.
Symptoms may include
8
sneezing runny nose Fatigue
cough fever Sore throat
exacerbated asthma
10. You can prevent getting infected
by the following methods
10
11. Wash your hands frequently
The virus commonly spreads from YOUR hands to
your body through your mouth and nose
Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with
soap and water as it kills viruses that may be on
your hands.
Do this every hour
Wash hands after touching things brought from
outside the home by anyone.
11
12. This is how you should wash your hands
To make sure that the virus cannot hide anywhere
12
14. Maintain social distancing
• Do not be near ANYONE
• Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between
yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
• Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray
small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which
may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe
in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the
person coughing has the disease.
14
15. 15
Do not touch others. No shaking hands.
Any virus can spread from one person to
the other even through mere touch
16. • stay at home • avoid close contact with
other people.
16
17. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
• Why?
• Hands touch many surfaces and
can pick up viruses. Once
contaminated, hands can
transfer the virus to your eyes,
nose or mouth. From there, the
virus can enter your body and
can make you sick.
17
18. Practice respiratory hygiene
• cover your mouth and nose with your bent
elbow or tissue/handkerchief when you cough
or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue
immediately.
• Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good
respiratory hygiene you protect the people
around you from viruses such as cold, flu and
COVID-19.
18
22. If you have the infection
• Stay at home-
• Keep away from others at home.
• rest and avoid overexertion
• drink enough water
• avoid smoking and smoky areas
• take acetaminophen for pain and fever
A doctor can diagnose the virus responsible by
taking a sample of respiratory fluids, such as mucus
from the nose, or blood.
22
23. seek medical advice
• If you develop fever, cough and difficulty
breathing, seek medical advice promptly as this
may be due to a respiratory infection or other
serious condition.
Why?
• They can diagnose your sickness
• They can treat you.
• This will also help to prevent spread of COVID-19
and other viruses.
23
24. Finally..
• Do not be afraid.
• Do not believe rumors.
• Stay at home
• Keep yourself occupied
• Eat healthy food
• Follow the orders of the government
• Pray and act responsibly
