19. 19. Formatting the Units

As a rule of thumb, the more you can blend the ad unit with your site, the better.
 20. 20. Start using the same colors of your own site (e.g., same background, headline with the same link color and so on).

 21. 23. A Little Known Trick...

You can actually choose up to 4 different color palettes , and Google will rotate them randomly for you.
 22. 24. This is a useful trick to reduce ad blindness on sites that get many repeat visitors.

 23. 25. Positioning the Units Effectively

You must place units above the fold if you want to make significant money.
 24. 26. The only exception to this rule is the spot at the bottom of your posts .
 25. 27. Units placed in the middle and in the left side of your site usually perform better.

 26. 28. The Google AdSense Heatmap
 27. 29. The Champion Combo

The “Champion Combo” is my nickname for the combination of a 336x280 ad unit placed right below the headline of your pages (e.g., below post titles in your blog).
 28. 30. On 95% of the cases this combo will outperform any unit/position combination.

 29. 32. You Don't Need to Annoy Your Users

Google for “ Why Do Work Plugin ” and you'll find WordPress plugin that allows you to display the “Champion Combo” only on posts older than X days.
 30. 33. Usually I set X to 7, so my loyal users never see that ad, while all visitors coming from search engines do!

 31. 34. Using Section Targeting

The more relevant the ads displayed in your AdSense units, the higher your CTR and earnings will be.
 32. 35. You can help Google here using the Section Targeting feature.
 33. 36. These are tags you'll place inside your HTML to emphasize important sections of your content.

 34. 37. Here Is How It Works...
 35. 38. You Can Also Ignore Sections
 36. 39. Test, Test, Test

The principles we covered today will help you optimize your AdSense units, but you'll still need to test if you want to maximize your earnings .
 37. 40. Simply experiment with different ad units, different colors, and different positions.
 38. 41. Track the results by creating one channel for each unit .
