While I believe “that my reality and your reality are never
quite the same…[and that] we interpret events based upon our
experiences”, I do believe there can be objective reality that is
the same for everyone under certain conditions (Module 7 Notes
Argyle and Wright). I found an interesting example of the
difference between subjective reality which “refers to feelings
and experiences that depend on the individual's own particular
viewpoint and traits [and objective reality which] “refers to
objects and events in the world that anyone can, in principle,
observe” (Indiana University). The example was actually given
by John Locke and it involved “holding one hand in ice water
and the other hand in hot water for a few moments” (Mulder).
Then, placing both hands in a bucket of tepid water. One hand
would feel that the water is hot while the other would feel that
the water is cold, just like two different people could perceive it
in two different ways (subjectively). On the other hand, if you
were to measure the temperature of the water, you would get an
objective reality of the temperature. For instance, the water is
85*F would be an observable fact, no matter how we perceive it
individually. An example in an organization could be a form
that has to be filled out and submitted for a citizen to receive a
service. While an employee might believe there is an easier way
to do this, or that the form is not important, the fact remains
that for the citizen to receive the service, the form has to be
filled out correctly and submitted. I feel like in a workplace
there has to be some objective reality for the work to be
completed.
