The splendid mariposa lily is a perennial bulb native to coastal California from Marin County to Baja California. It grows 1-2 feet tall with very narrow leaves that wither before or at blooming time. From mid to late spring, it produces lovely purple flowers with darker splotches at the base and showy anthers surrounded by white hairs. It prefers well-drained, sunny or partly sunny locations and only needs winter/spring water with no summer water needed. It is a low maintenance plant that attracts pollinators and reseeds easily.
