3. THE CHALLENGE
As a design studio at Arizona
State University we were given
the challenge to revitalize and
improve the site of Gammage
Auditorium which is located on
the southwest corner of the
Tempe Campus.
After researching the original
construction documents, it was
determined that the landscape
was not considered to have
historical significance like the
building and fountains.
The holistic goal of this design
is to maintain the integrity of
Gammage Auditorium while
making the additions to the
landscape distinct yet
compatible with Frank Lloyd
Wright’s design.

4. VEHICLE ORIENTED DESIGN
The site around Gammage
was design for vehicles. All of
the inner circulation around
the building and also on the
surrounding streets include
wide traffic lanes and parking
but no bike lanes.
This is inappropriate for the
context and use of the site
due to its immediate vicinity to
the university. To resolve this
issue my design will focus on
the pedestrians and bicyclists
that frequent the area.

5. PARKING CIRCULATION
The parking lot at Gammage
Auditorium is inefficient and
over-utilized.
It is used by the students of
ASU during the day and also
by the patrons of auditorium in
the evenings and weekends.

The parking lot appears to
have connectivity through the
entire site however those
roads are closed during
shows, leaving only one route
to exit and enter the lot.
The long rows of parking
increase speeding and make
the area unsafe for
pedestrians.

6. LACK OF FUNCTIONAL
GATHERING SPACES
Gammage now is surrounded
by underused large grass
areas both along the Apache
Blvd. curve and at the
intersection of Gammage
Parkway and Forest Ave.
Both of these lawn areas are
retention basins used mostly
for drainage when the site was
flood irrigated.
Currently, the lawns serve as
barriers to pedestrian
circulation and the vegetation
is used as a campsite for the
homeless.

7. MANAGING WRIGHT’S LEGACY
Frank Lloyd Wright is one of
the most iconic architects of
history. His work on
Gammage Auditorium and at
Taliesin West are of great
significance to Arizona.
One of Wright’s main
conceptual legacies was
creating the effect of
compression and release. As
the design for Gammage’s
landscape emerges, I plan on
implementing my own version
of his concept as well as
maintaining the circular motif
of the building.

8. OVERALL CONCEPT AND IMAGES
Vision
The main concept of
my design is the
continuation of
Wright’s circular motif
which is seen
throughout the
entirety of Gammage
Auditorium
Overall the design
should promote
pedestrian comfort
and use while
maintaining a distinct
yet compatible
appearance in
relation to Gammage.

9. PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED DESIGN
Around the building perimeter
the streetscape will become a
pedestrian plaza that only
emergency vehicles can
access.
Gammage is on Arizona
State University’s
campus therefore
should accommodate
patrons of the
auditorium and
students.
.
In order to make this site
more of a pedestrian friendly
environment, traffic calming
elements need to be used.
For Forest Ave. this means
taking out the on-street
parking to make room for a
protected bike lane.

10. IMPROVE CIRCULATION
There is a lot of traffic in this
area of campus no matter if
there is a show at Gammage
or not. Commuting students
use the parking lot during the
day and there are multiple bus
routes that go down Forest
Ave.
But those are not the only
circulation issues with the
site. Pedestrians do not have
a safe crosswalk anywhere in
the area and when people
come to the shows it is even
more difficult to get to the
building due to lack of access
points and ADA ramps.

11. IDENTIFY AREAS FOR GATHERING AND EDUCATION
Gammage should
welcome utility and
functionality of space
for educational and
social uses.
Gammage has three lawn
areas that are underutilized as
gathering spaces. There are
very few people that enjoy
and use the massive lawns
even if the weather is nice.
Vision
The lawn adjacent to
campus should include an
outdoor classroom setting
as well as seating for
students.
The front lawn can be
used for small events and
socializing before a show.

12. In this quadrant the design
focus will be on the parking lot
and views from Apache Blvd.
The parking lot will become
more linear and easily
navigated. And also will
provide a pedestrian safe zone
that leads to the Gammage
fountain. The circulation will
change dramatically to
enhance the use of the
parking lot
Views from Apache Blvd of
Gammage will be framed a
rammed earth wall.
NORTHWEST QUADRANT
Zones

13. SOUTHEAST QUADRANT
Just like the Northwest
quadrant, this quadrant will
focus on parking and defining
the front edge of the site.
The walls will be built up to
initially hide Gammage then at
specific moments along the
wall a spectacular view of
Gammage appears.
There will be multiple access
points to the ticket booth with
an emphasis on ADA ramps
which are currently missing
on the site.

14. BUILDING FOREGROUND
Zones
The foreground of
Gammage will look the
most different in
comparison to the other
changes in the design.
This area will become a
gathering and garden
space that can be used
before and after the
shows. There will be a
wall here as well which
will display the signage
for the building and hide
the full frontal view of
Gammage.
If a driver is to glance at
Gammage from the road,
they should see the real
money shots and not just
the face of Gammage.

15. CAMPUS QUADRANT
The campus quadrant is the
main access point from ASU to
Gammage.
The intention is to maintain the
integrity of the two lawn
spaces by keeping the
sidewalk that splits the spaces.
The original Gammage design
is very symmetrical. The plan
is to mirror the spaces created
to match the other side.

16. GAMMAGE PARKWAY AND FOREST AVE.
INTERSECTION
Details
This intersection is a cause of
concern for all bicyclists,
pedestrians and vehicles.
The roundabout will slow
down traffic and relieve
congestion caused by the bus
stop in the corner. Buses will
be the only vehicle allowed in
the outer lane which keeps
the traffic moving. Other
vehicles will now have the
opportunity to do a U-turn
safely without interfering with
pedestrian crossing
On Forest Ave. the on-street
parking was repurposed into a
protected bike lane on both
sides of the road.

17. PARKING
Details
The parking lot has been
transformed to be linear with
multiple exits and routes
within the aisles.
In the center aisle and at the
bottom of each wing there is a
designated pedestrian island.
These allow for safe passage
through the parking lot.
The center aisle is a direct
access to the front doors of
Gammage. The terminus of
the aisle leads to the historic
fountain which wrapped with
an inviting and elegant
staircase.

18. GATHERING SPACES
Details
These symmetrical gathering
spaces can be used as both an
outdoor classroom and hang
out place for students.
Students now have benches
and an amphitheater to use.
Also at the front of the site, the
lawn is now a place for sitting
and socializing before events.

19. THE BUILDING PERIMETER
Details
The building perimeter that
was once all parallel parking
is now a plaza for patrons to
use before, after and during
an event.
The plaza is elevated higher
than the parking lot and the
front lawn which also serves
as a gathering space.
The fountains are now a focal
point from the parking lot.
With stairs and ramps to
create an elegant and royal
entrance to Gammage
Auditorium.

20. SO WHAT?
This design gives some ideas
on how Gammage can be an
even more remembered and
utilized place for people.
The landscape around
Gammage is a big part
of the experience.
As a historically significant
building Gammage Auditorium
brings many people to the
ASU campus.
