Stop the Education cuts!
Budget cuts at Birmingham City Council’s Central Services mean that staff in the Outdoor
Learning Service, Music Service, BASS, Education Action Zones, the City Learning Centres,
Governors and School Support, Health Education Service, catering and cleaning and
more are not only facing real cuts and redundancies now, but the prospect of being
privatized into ‘trusts or cooperatives’. The result of these cuts will be increased charges
and fewer staff, producing a poorer service for our children leaving schools expected to
deliver more for less.
Our children are at risk of losing the vital experiences of learning at Birmingham museums,
libraries, school farms or in outdoor settings forever. They are at risk of losing help with
behaviour, decent school meals, expert training for teachers or being able to get a wider
experience of sports and music.
We don’t believe that these cuts have to happen. The Trades Union Congress has made
clear that by tackling tax avoidance by the wealthy we can both reduce the deficit and
have decent public services for all. Instead of implementing plans to cut our services, we
urge Birmingham City Council to stand up for its children and staff by pressing the
Government for more money.
