My English Skills Essay
Learning a language is one of the most difficult skills that a human can ever learn. Yet, it is also
one of the most critical skills that everyone must develop to properly live in a civilized society.
Learning a second language such as English is no different, except that it is for the great benefit of
having the opportunity to be eligible for many more jobs inside and outside the birth country.
Naturally, it is why developing English skills is the landmark goal that majority of people want to
strive for. In my experience of developing my English skills, there are many things that I encounter
as part of my development. The aspects throughout my English skill's development include how I
developed the skills, the big hurdles hindering my mastery,...show more content...
The first time I have attended classes in an English–speaking environment dated back to when I was
still a 7th grader, which is the grade at my high school that I have the choice to choose the so–called
English Program course in which the teacher for every subject except Thai and History taught in
English. Consequently, the constant exposure to English language classes up to this day is what
formed the root of all the motivation I have today for maintaining my improvement on my English
skills. Furthermore, as the result of the motivation, learning English by myself became the primary
passive activity for all of my leisure time. Since the last decade, the online world has become the
primary place where I always read and listen to everything in English. For instance, when watching
YouTube videos, I always listen for the content that is spoken in the video. At the same time, I also
exposed myself to all kinds of English accents, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, which in
turn means lead to less effort on trying to understand real conversations in English. Indeed, the ways
I have advanced my English skills is the backbone of all the motivation to keep it strong and

Essay about The History of English
The History of English The most commonly spoken language in our day, would be English or as
some people might call it " The Lingua Franca ". It is a language, which is taken almost a thousand
years to evolve, mainly through its borrowings from other languages such as French and Latin. It is
actually classified as part of the Germanic group of languages. Even though it is the most commonly
spoken language today, it is not without its faults, which would be its phonetic symbols only,
representing one sound and each sound would have its appropriate symbol. Most European
languages are very similar to those spoken in India and Persia, assuming that most of the European
peoples are descendants of the...show more content...
(Lecture notes, M. Disney) Latin influenced English before the Anglo–Saxons arrived in England.
The Germanic tribes who later settled on the isles were in contact with small parts of the Roman
civilization. Some of the words borrowed by the Germanic groups were: Mint: Minet, Street: strata
via When the first English tribes came to settle in England they made contact with the people that
had been part of the Roman Empire which probably spoke a form of Latin. Some of their words past
in to the language of the new conquerors. (Lecture notes, M. Disney) In the sixth century St.
Benedict reintroduced Christianity. As the religion spread English added a large number of Latin
words to itself to express new ideas connected with the religion. However, this lead to the loss of
grammatical gender of the language and therefore mixed the vocabulary. (Internet 1) In the eighth
century the Danes made continual raids upon the English coasts which they later settled. They were
then defeated by King Alfred the Great. A hundred years later another Danish King invaded England
and managed to get his son, Canute, was put upon the English throne. These Danish invasions,
however destructive they were, had quite a tremendous influence upon the English language. The
English borrowed words such as skin, ill, get and leg. (Lecture notes, M. Disney)

Essay On English Grammar
English grammar is an extensive and complicated set of rules that govern how we speak and write
using the English language. Grammar has evolved over many centuries, and the rules change from
time to time. Teaching grammar plays a central role in every ESL / EFL teacher's classroom. The
topics cover a range from letters and sounds, parts of speech, vocabulary and stories to dialogue and
conversation, listening comprehension, reading comprehension and written composition. English
language and its usage have become extremely emotive issues in recent years... 'An Introduction to
English Grammar' is an invaluable guide to the study of English language in an accessible format.
Generally the authors begin with an introduction chapter on the nature of grammar and on the
varieties of English and move on to provide an outline description of English grammar. It is to be
understood that "Recognizing the goal of the grammar course is to improve students' grasp of
English grammar, and not to make students into linguists. Many authors have written streamlined,
concise textbooks they avoid getting caught up in details that are interesting to linguists...show more

In my remarks I hope to dispel some of the misunderstandings that promote its continuing existence.
But, before viewing the role that grammar has played in the history of second language teaching,
let's first explore the nature of grammar. Linguists define grammar as a set of components: phonetics
,the production and perception of sounds, phonology ,how sounds are combined, morphology ,the
study of forms, or how elements are combined to create words, syntax ,how words are strung
together into sentences, and semantics or meaning. Because all languages are characterized by these
components, by definition, language does not exist without

Standard English Essay
The question to ask is: 'Why not use Standard English all the time?'
Language is a powerful communication tool the user holds to express their individual identity and
ingroup solidarity. The use of Standard English helps to direct this, as it acts as the structure of
communication, ingroup and between speech communities to effectively present a standard for
mutual understanding. Outside of Standard English comes the use of slang, netspeak and textspeak,
which helps to develop and enrich the language, as well as evolve with contemporary Australia and
its fast paced lifestyle. Using the Standard all the time would be exclusive of the linguistic freedom
formed by the world beyond Standard English with varying ethnolects, but is also a...show more

Other forms of the English language are developed from speech communities with an intention, for
efficiency and to show inclusion, and to exclude others. It also helps to convey a specific identity of
the speaker, with the use of syntactic and phonological differences from Standard English. These
modifications form non–standard dialects, transferring the speaker's cultural background and
language to provide a better perception and reflection of identity. The falling intonation accompanied
with interrogatives in the Asian ethnolect, such as 'Gravy?', is the opposite of the rising intonation
used for the same purpose by Australians, and can quickly cause conflict between the two
communities due to the missing benchmark in language. Pronoun deletion in 'No like' ('I don't like
it') is a feature of many ethnolects (Greek, Aboriginal English), and is differing from the Standard,
yet still helps to get the message across. Ethnolects develop from Standard English, and helps to
express a user's identity through their language use and in–group solidarity within the speech
community.
There are a range of English varieties which are different from the Standard, developed from
communities of speakers all sharing the same use of language. Aboriginal English, a dialect of
Australian English, remains a lingua franca for their speakers, used as a common language to
communicate between tribes for mutual
