1. BBFC Analysis
Who is the BBFC?
The British Board of Film Classification BBFC is an independent organization,
which categorizes different movies into different age ranges judging on the
content that is in the movies. It was established in 1912 by the film industry
when local authorities started to apply their own, widely varying, censorship
standards on films. In 2010, the BBFC started a statutory requirement to
classify video games.
The Universal (U) Age Rating means that the content is suitable for
everybody. However, in cinema conditions, children who are under the age of
4 are not allowed to watch universal films while at home, they can.
Parental Guidance (PG) Age Ratings mean that some scenes in movies may
be unsuitable for children under the age of 8. However, parents are advised to
consider whether the content may be unsuitable towards young or more
sensitive children.
The 12 rating certificate means that the content in the movie is suitable for 12
year olds minimum. This means there is only a little bit of graphic content
such as little adult content such as glimpse of body parts depending on the
content. Later, the age rating certificate 12A was introduced due to Spiderman
2 being rated a fully restrictive 12 years meaning that parents could not take
their children to cinemas to watch it. This 12A rating has only been applied to
cinemas.
The 15 rating certificate means that there is a bit of graphic content such as
violence, adult content, taste and decency, and swearing. For example, a bit
of nudity can be shown depending on the context that it is in. A scene that
creates intensity, for example, in the Last King of Scotland, when the captain
is hanging the person by hooks, it makes the audience tense to the scene,
even though they cannot actually see the hooks going in, but they can feel
how intense the pain the person is experiencing.
The 18 rating certificate means that there is quite a lot of graphical content
such as a lot of violence, adult content, taste and decency and swearing. For
example, if someone swears a lot in a movie, this could bump the movie up to
an 18 because they are using a lot of inappropriate language which is very
unsuitable for younger age groups.
