4. Halftone Process 1870
■ Halftone was first printed in 1871 in
Canadian Illustrated News Prints
■ Halftone was printed inAmerican
newspapers in 1880
■ Photographs are made up of a
continuous tone of color
■ The Halftone process prints dots of
various sizes to create different
tones and shadows.
■ The picture to the right shows how
an area of continuous tone would be
displayed in halftone.
■ Allowed for photojournalists to have
their images published in
newspapers.

5. Roll Film 1888
■ Invented by George Eastman.
■ It was actually a camera that was
sold with film within the camera.
■ The film consisted of 100 exposures
and when all 100 exposures had
been used, the camera was sent
back to the company where they
developed it and then sent it back to
the customer.
■ Eastman had said “You press the
button, we do the rest.”
■ Roll film allowed for photojournalists
to take more than one picture before
having to develop them. Image source:

6. Graflex Camera 1914
■ Graflex is the combination of the
words graphic and reflex.
■ Includes a mechanically moving
curtain to allow a brief period of light
exposure to the film. This became
known at the focal-plane shutter.
■ Focal-plane shutters continue to be
used today.
■ Allowed photojournalists to keep up
with increasingly light sensitive film.

7. 35mm Color Film 1936
■ Color photographs were possible before
color film but the process was lengthy and
involved dangerous chemicals.
■ Color film sped up the developing process
and made it easier for photojournalists to
get their color photographs in hand.
■ Color film was referred to as “Kodachrome”
■ The image to the right shows the different
layers of color film resulting in the multitude
of colors seen in a color photograph.

8. Auto/Self Focusing Camera 1977
■ First mass produced automatic
focusing camera was the KonicaC35
AF.
■ It was a simple point and shoot
camera.
■ It was a time saver and improved the
quality of photographs.
■ Auto focus happens as a result of a
sensor, control system and motor to
automatically choose a focus point.
■ Photographers were able to see
something they wanted to
photograph, point their camera and
shoot the picture.

9. Online Newspaper 1980
■ The first newspaper to go online was
the Columbus Dispatch on July 1,
1980.
■ CompuServe dial up service was

10. Photoshop Editing 1987
■ Invented in 1987 byThomas and John
Knoll.
■ They sold the distribution license to Adobe
Systems Incorporated in 1988.
■ Allows for the editing of pictures.
Changing the coloring of photos, adding
elements to photos, cropping photos and
many other things.
■ Allowed photojournalists to edit their
photographs the way they wanted too.
■ Photojournalists no longer had to leave the
editing of their photographs up to the
discretion of someone else.

develop more of their own style.

11. Camera Phone
specifically iPhone 2007
■ Steve Jobs announced the first iPhone
January 9, 2007
■ The first iPhone was equipped with a 2
megapixel camera and just a couple
filters such as sepia and black and white.
■ Today’s iPhone is equipped with a 12
megapixel camera and many other photo
taking and editing options.
■ iPhones allowed photojournalists to have
a pocket sized camera virtually anywhere
they went.
■ iPhone advancements continue to come
out each time with better picture taking
