1. Who sets the fees?
As a Child Care Home provider, you manage
your home as an independent business. You
set your fees. When you decide to accept a
child or children, you sign a contract with the
parent. The contract form is available online
and contains space for you to set out terms of
care, the times your child care home is open
each day, your fee, and other agreed upon
conditions or guidelines.
How do I get paid?
Parents pay their fees directly to you.
Subsides are available to assist eligible
families with the cost of child care if their
children attend a licensed family child care
home. If your home is licensed, you may
enroll any child whether or not their family
qualifies for a subsidy.
If you are caring for a child for whom the
parent receives subsidy, you will receive the
subsidized portion of your fee directly from
the Ministry of Social Services. Parents will
pay their portion of the fee directly to you.
If you are interested in
 caring for children,
 working for yourself, and
 earning money in your own home,
then operating a licensed Family Child Care
Home may be the right choice for you.

2. What is a licensed family child care
home?
Family Child Care is the care provided to
children in a private home licensed by the
Ministry of Education.
The aim
of the Family Child Care
Home program is to have young children
cared for by a warm, caring person in a safe
and stimulating home environment that meets
their developmental needs and supports and
respects their families.
There are three models of licensed Family
Child Care in Saskatchewan:
 Family Child Care Homes operated by
one provider who is licensed to care for
up to eight children in his/her own home;
 Group Family Child Care Homes
operated by one provider with the help of
an assistant. Group Family Child Care
Homes are licensed to care for up to 12
children; and
 Teen Student Support Homes operated
by one provider who works with a high
school to care for the children of teen
parents who attend the high school.
How will parents know I operate a
child care home?
All licensed child care providers are included
on a list that the Early Learning and Child
Care (ELCC) Branch provides to parents who
enquire about child care homes or centres
near them. This list is also available on the
Ministry of Education web site.
How do I become a licensed child
care home provider?
If you think you may be interested in
operating a licensed Family Child Care Home
and would like more information, contact
ELCC at the office nearest you. Telephone
numbers are listed on the back of this
brochure.
ELCC child care staff will provide you with
resource material and will assign a Program
Consultant to help you through the licensing
process. Once you are licensed, your
consultant will continue to provide advice,
support and monitoring and will be available
to answer any questions you might have.
There is no charge for resource material or
support services provided by ELCC.
Are there other supports available?
Financial assistance is available to licensed
child care home providers who care for
children with special needs.
Parents using your home may qualify for a
child care subsidy to assist with the parent fee.
As a Family Child Care Home provider, you
have the opportunity to be part of a support
network. These networks and associations
offer various benefits that might include
professional workshops, insurance, children’s
group activities and informal get-togethers.
Is there any financial help available
to get started?
The ELCC Branch provides assistance with
start-up costs for licensed homes.
As a licensed child care provider, you would
also be eligible for a yearly equipment and
materials grant, and a monthly nutrition
grant.
