  1. 1. Individual GC & E Reflection Paper ECEP 232 Sheila Sullivan JUNNIFER VILLANUEVA November 19, 2012
  2. 2. The agency that our group visited is Bob Rumball for theDeaf at 2395 Bayview Avenue, Toronto. This agency had agreat impact on me because this is the only agency thatoffers child support programs for children who are deafand hard of hearing. The family resource centre helps thechildren and parents to socialized and also learn AmericanSign Language. The staffs offer emotional support andsocial connections to the families. Bob Rumball offersdifferent services to all deaf and hard of hearing person.Bob Rumball for the Deaf also offers workshops onunderstanding what hearing loss and educates the child orfamilies about the hearing aid technology. Bob Rumballwork simultaneously with the other organizations such asInfant Hearing Program, Toronto District School Board,Toronto Catholic School Board, Silent Voice, ProvincialSchool Branch, and Hands & Voices.com. The staffs willhelp the families to connect to the different outreachprograms and avail the services offered.Based on the presentation I have learned that manyfamilies are also facing some issues regarding communityservices. Some agencies have no access to health/dentalinsurance. There is a long waiting list to access affordablehousing and childcare subsidies. Applicants are screenaccording to their income, education like fluency in
  3. 3. English. There is also some problems on the location of theagency, some have only one location and not veryconvenient to the affected families. Evaluating theadvantages and disadvantages the agency offers, I thinkthey have more advantages that make these agencies veryhelpful to the community. The presence of these differentagencies had a great impact on the lives of the peopleespecially those who have a particular problem like teenparents, divorced, abused children, deaf and hard ofhearing, newcomers and etc. These agencies offeremotional, physical, financial, educational supports to thefamilies. Most are non-profit organizations funded byprivate sectors and donations. We as a global citizen and future Early ChildhoodEducators, we have the responsibility to support familiesduring their transitions to work towards a better place tolive and have a healthy families. We will help them to live anormal life. As future ECE’s we will be the teachers of thechildren, to guide them to become good citizens. This assignment gave us a lot of information on thedifferent agencies that are available in the community tosupport the families.
