A Brooklyn-based company created an initiative called Columbia Cares to raise funds for the American Childhood Cancer Organization, surpassing their $10,000 goal by February. Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related deaths for children between 5-14 years old, with around 13,400 children diagnosed annually. New statistics show approximately 15,780 new childhood and adolescent cancer cases expected in 2014, with over 66% of cases in children 14 years old or younger.

2. A Brooklyn-based company, Columbia Utilities
created Columbia Cares, an initiative initially created
to raise funds for the American Childhood Cancer
Organization. Setting out to raise $10,000 by the end
of 2014, Columbia Utilities surpassed its goal by
February.
According to the National Academy of Sciences,
cancer is the leading cause of disease-related
deaths in children. In fact, the illness makes up
approximately half of deaths for children between
the ages of 5 and 14. The American Childhood
Cancer Organization's research states that an
estimated 13,400 children are diagnosed with cancer
each year.
3. In 2014, the American Cancer Society released
new numbers showing that about 15,780 new
cases of childhood and adolescent cancer are
expected for the year. Derived from data
collected by the National Cancer Institute, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
and the North American Association of Central
Cancer Registries, the count also sheds light on
the fact that more than 66 percent of cases will
be in children 14 years of age and younger.
Common forms of cancer in children include
acute lymphocytic leukemia, brain cancer,
and neuroblastoma.
