4. ‘create an original brand sting that
has smacks of E4 attitude and can be
played out on our telly-channel. It
can be live action; it can be animated;
it can be 2D, 3D, or 4D; it can be hi-fi,
lo-fi, big-budget or no-budget’

Stings must be eye catching and creative- they have to grab the viewers
attention within a split second! E4 stings represent everything they are aboutwildness, fun, creativity and freshness; this is what needs to be captured in
ten seconds. There ‘ATTITUDE’ must be visible to the audience. E4 are
known for strange promotion campaigns and have been since 2005; according
to an online source, the Estings are apart of Channel 4’s commitment to
‘nurture and develop new talent in exciting and innovative ways’.
5. E4 was launched as Channel 4’s
companion channel on the 18th
January 2001.
The core target
audience is 1535.
The stings can follow any
structure and include
anything desired as long as
it’s 10 seconds or under.
Promiscuity, violence,
swearing and drugs are
permitted as long as it doe’s
not cause offence and is
suitable to air- however it
must be after 10pm.
The current stings are created by anyone and
everyone who wishes to produce one and
judged by a Channel 4 panel. Since the launch of
Estings back in 2005 they have become more
wacky and imaginative. They range from flying
cows, to brain eating dogs and melting
grannies. Each year they become crazier, louder
and more attention grabbing- exactly how E4
want to be represented.
From 2001-2005 E4
used simple idents
until it was decided
these would be
scraped and
replaced with
stings; they wanted
to produce a new,
more innovative
image for
themselves that
would bring in
there target
audience.
