Family and friends of the late president Corazon “Cory” Aquino gathered at
La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) Sunday to commemorate her first death
anniversary.
Most of those who came wore yellow, Aquino’s signature color.
At the same time, President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, with sisters Ballsy,
Pinky, Viel, and Kris, unveiled a historical marker near the Namfrel
Operation Quick Count board containing the 1986 snap elections tally. The
said poll spurred the first People Power.
It was also in LSGH where thousands of Filipinos flocked to attend the
former president’s wake after she succumbed to colon cancer August 1 last
year.
A video presentation in honor of the late president was shown. Its message
read: “She may have passed on but her legacy lives on.”
Rapa Lopa, nephew of the late president, said in his speech that his “Auntie
Cory” was a “shining example of moral governance.”
Cory’s People ower People Movement was also relaunched, with “seed
people” including CNN Hero of the Year Efren Penaflorida.
Over a dozen priests, led by Bishop Socrates Villegas, also held a Mass for
Aquino’s death anniversary.
In his homily, Villegas told the president not to allow his successor to inherit
a corrupt government.
“Iyong parte ko po na ipapamanang maayos sa kasunod ko, siyempre iyon
po ang misyon natin na maisa-ayos,” the President said in a press briefing
after the mass when asked to react about Villegas’ call.
2. In his speech, Aquino recalled the past year.
“Napakarami pong nangyari sa loob lamang ng isang taon . Ang pagpanaw
ng ina namin ang siyang nagtulak sa napakaraming taong pilitin at hamunin
akong tumakbo bilang pangulo. Sa pagbababang luksa natin, sa tulong ng
Maykapal at sa balikat ng taumbayan, ako po ay narito ngayon bilang inyong
pangulo,” he said.
He then thanked his supporters during the campaign.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who helped
us get to where we are now, and are still with us in the more difficult part of
the journey towards change,” he said.
Apart from the Aquino family, also seen at the area were Vice President
Jejomar Binay and his family, the president’s Cabinet members and his
girlfriend Shalani Soledad.
