Research on Asian Prescription Patterns (REAP)
REAP is the largest and the longest lasting international collaborative
project in psychiatry in Asia.
Since 2000, psychiatrists in East Asia have carried out collaborative
research to study prescription patterns of psychotropic drugs in different
countries and areas of East Asia. The research is known as REAP among Asian
psychiatrists. The countries and areas which participated in the survey in 2001
and 2004 were China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. In2008,
India Malaysia and Thailand also joined. All of the countries and areas collected
the data based on the unified research protocol using the same questionnaire.
More than 6,000 prescriptions of schizophrenic inpatients, around 2,000 in 2001,
2004 and 2008 each year, have been analyzed and compared. The results yielded
a number of interesting findings about the prescription of psychotropic drugs in
Asia. Japan was noted with its high dose prescription and poly-pharmacy. The
availability of certain drugs differs greatly from country to country. From 2001
to 2008, there has been a major shift in the prescription of FGA to SGA in all
Asian countries which participated in the REAP survey. This shift was
accompanied by the changes in the side effects and by the uses of other
psychotropic drugs. These findings were reported by Asian psychiatrists in more
than 50 reputable international journals.
In 2004, REAP members surveyed the prescription of anti-depressants and
made a follow up survey in 2013. Forty psychiatric institutions and more than
250 psychiatrists from ten countries and areas in Asia participate in the recently
concluded 2013 survey.
REAP has promoted research collaboration in psychiatry among
developed and developing countries in Asia. Also, REAPhas possibly contributed
to the improvement of the prescription of psychotropic drugs in Asian countries
which participated in the collaborative research.
