The Psychological Effects Of Night Terrors
Within a week of my birth, my parents sent me to a myopically conservative ship community to
prevent exposure of liberalism to me. Unfortunately, I felt nothing but alienation due to my inability
to relate with my peers, but relocation was unattainable. My deep desperation to escape my world of
torture caused the onset of night–terrors. Because of the potential violent qualities of night–terrors, I
decided to keep a journal to provide future references and to monitor my psychological changes.
At age twelve, each community member is delegated a daily job by the ship's captain. I never
understood how the other children stayed on task so easily, for I constantly found myself entranced
with the whirling clouds and soaring birds in the sky ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Time passed differently in the empty bunkers, making it impossible to anticipate the cold, numbing
winter nights. In time, a mandatory work check–in forced me to leave my haven, revealing an
immense change in the community's atmosphere. Everything on the ship had been tinted grey, an
ominous mist hung in the air, and every noise seemed to be muffled.
Perhaps the most unsettling deviation I saw was the sky's morphed composition. Where the
abundance of beautiful life and whimsical clouds once used to be, now was flooded with grotesque
cloud forms and hideous birds that screeched distorted notes from lullabies that once calmed me.
The sense of impending doom presented by the sky had urged me to ask the captain if a pejorative
forecast was expected. The captain asked me how detrimental weather was a concern of mine,
because he claimed to see nothing but a clear sky and serene sunrays. "Quit seeking attention so
avidly and carry on just like the rest of your buddies," he spat.
It was the most peculiar thing, for I did not feel so much as a twinge of sorrow after the captain
spoke to me in such an overtly condescending manner. Suddenly, it occurred to me that I had been
void of any emotion since the onset of winter's frigid weather. I had become a human shell–my
senses and emotions both frozen.
One sole thing remained in which my energy was invested–an intense longing for a lighthouse to
illuminate my face once

Characters In Night By Elie Wiesel
Do you think you've ever felt pain and fear in your life? The people in the Holocaust definitely have.
In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, the main character faces many struggles from the beginning to the
end of the book. Elie, the main character, changes dramatically because of his experiences in
Auschwitz and the struggles he went through at the camp.
Before Elie was sent to the concentration camp, he exhibited many character traits. These include
being observant, hopeful for the future, and faithful in what he believes in. On page 3 of Night
Wiesel wrote, "Physically, he was as awkward as a clown. His waiflike shyness made people smile.
As for me, I liked his wide, dreamy eyes, gazing off into the distance." Throughout the book, Elie
observed how people looked and how they acted. In the quote above he is observing how Moshie
the Beadle looks and acts. He also does this while in the ghetto so he won't get beaten for acting out
of line. Also in the book Wiesel wrote, "Confidence soared. Suddenly we felt free of the previous
nights' terrors. We gave thanks to God" (27). This was when Elie was just getting off the train to
head to Auschwitz after being stuck in the train for many nights. Like the quote says, he was very
happy to be let out of that train car because there was no room to move and hardly anything to eat
and drink. What he didn't know is that he was just being lead to something much worse. Elie was
hopeful that all he was going to do there was work in decent

And Night Terrors And Nightmares
Nightmares
Imagine getting out of bed, drinking your daily cup of coffee and going about your day until you
realize you are still asleep, and everything happening was unreal. This is called a false awakening,
having one every so often is not something to fret about. Although the famous philosopher Bertrand
Russell, claimed to have gone through around a hundred false awakenings when awakening from his
slumber, which made it hard for him to indicate the difference between a dream or reality. There are
many different types of nightmares and countless different ways humans react to them. Nightmares
produce very discomforting and disturbing images causing a lack of sleep, high amounts of stress or
anxiety and could provoke mental health problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Night terrors usually occur fifteen minutes to one hour after going to sleep during non–rapid eye
movement sleep. This happens before the hours of REM sleep. The longer the person is in NREM
before the night terror strikes the more scared a person will be when it occurs. Most people will
wake up gasping, moaning, crying, screaming, and breathing rapidly. Numerous people will sit up in
bed with a "wide eyed terror filled stare" this is a panic often lasting anywhere from five to twenty
minutes. With nightmares, children can often recall the experience with detail. On the other hand,
with night terrors people usually have no remembrance of the experience the next morning. Also,
night terrors can generate a heart rate of 160 to 170 beats per minute. Amazingly, this is much faster
than the normal heart rate that can be handled under most stressful circumstances. People can and
have caused injury to themselves and others through their actions during night terrors. From my
reading, "in 1943, Joan Kiger began fending off "shadowy figures" during a night terror, and while
sleepwalking she shot and killed her father and her 6–year–old brother. William Pollard, a known
sleepwalker, dreamed he was being attacked, only to awake and see that he had bludgeoned his
daughter to death with a flashlight." As you can see, these dark experiences can cause us to do

A Short Story : A Story?
Jahzara was laying on her gigantic king sized bed daydreaming about the man she loved but who
was forbidden to be with. Her mom, Oadira, walked in and saw her staring at the ceiling, blushing
and smiling uncontrollably. "Are you thinking about that boy again?" said Oadira. "He's not just a
boy mom," said Jahzara, "I love him". "A princess needs to marry a prince, not a dirty knight who's
never around." Oadira would say as the tension between the rose. "I'm 19," said Jahzara, "I can love
whoever I choose, you can't just control my life like I'm a child." After that, she stormed off to the
hill she always used to go to as a kid when she got mad. It was a calming place for her, she could see
all the buildings, the beautiful full green trees, bugs buzzing all around her, birds chirping in the
distance, the vast blue sky occasionally with puffy white clouds, but best of all, no people, till today.
"I can't believe my mom actually thinks we'd stay away from each other," said Jahzara. "She just
doesn't want her beautifully tall, dark skinned daughter with short curly black hair, delicious
chocolaty brown eyes and plump lips to end up with the wrong man," said Faarees while taking her
hair in his rough manly hand, twirling it between his fingers and staring deep into her eyes.
The rest of the night was extraordinarily romantic, Faarees brought Jahzara freshly picked red roses

The Fears Of Fear : Fear Of Darkness
I've always had fears in the back of my mind but as I've got older I have come realize that they were
childish and silly thoughts that stopped me from achieving big things. The first fear I had was
Nycophobia or in other words the fear of darkness. I could distinctly remember when I could see
shadows on the wall which in my mind were monsters, ghosts.
The fear of darkness is a common phobia to have but to me it was more than just a fear it was an
integral part of my life. Most young children can go to bed and fall asleep without any hassle,
however in my case going to bed was like being sent to death. There I would lay on my bed in a
dark room when I would see a shadow zoom past the wall causing me to scream like a little girl, it
was embarrassing. Then again, this was only one of the encounters I had with 'spirit world' but there
was one encounter and this was the worst of all, it was that scary it could frighten a grown man. And
it all started at my little old grans house.
My granny's house lay on a narrow street next to the graveyard which really spooked me out,
however I did have my granny to look after me, right? No, instead of sleeping in my grans nice cosy
bedroom that night I had to sleep downstairs on my own in my uncle's old room. This room was the
complete opposite of my grans it was a cold and smelly old room which was almost non liveable.
Despite this, I did have a huge double bed all to myself. I arrived and I was dreading it, it is not

Examples Of Father Son Relationship In Night By Elie Wiesel
Night by Elie Wiesel is a short book about Wiesel's experiences in the Auschwitz sub–camps. The
theme developed by Wiesel throughout the text is the idea of loss and dehumanization, which are
prevalent during the entire book. Wiesel writes this book from his own perspective, but he alters the
character slightly to distance himself from the horrible events that occurred. The book is organized
into parts, each with differing times which in turn cover the five years of his experiences. This essay
will describe the relationship between Eliezer and his father, Schlomo. The relationship
development aspects I will discuss occurred at the fire pits of Birkenau, the constant beating of
Schlomo at Buna, and finally, Schlomo's death in Buchenwald.
Eliezer and Schlomo's father–son relationship is the reason Elie had hope throughout the Holocaust.
After the selection at the arrival of Auschwitz., Elie and his father had to walk towards the fire pits,
where babies, children, and adults are being thrown in. Elie and his father thought that this was their
fate as well. Such a traumatizing event brings forth a critical quote spoken from Schlomo, "You
should have gone with your mother". This in context, references to the selection, as Schlomo did not
want to see his son die. Another idea used to portray this extreme idea of mental torture was a
thought from Eliezer, where he wants to throw himself into the electric fence to escape the brutal
death of burning in the pits. This started

Night Terrors : The Causes And Effects Of Night Terrors
When you are awoken to a screaming child, sweating with a rapid heart rate. See tears forming in
their eyes. Try to shake them awake but they are stuck in a deep sleep. This is what many parents are
faced with every night from their children. Night terrors can potentially be a very scary scene that
someday might take place.
Night terrors can also be classified as sleep terrors. It is a sleep disorder causing feelings of terror or
dread, and typically occurs during the first hours of stage three–four rapid eye movement (NREM)
sleep. Sleep terrors usually begin in children between the ages of three and twelve, and usually stop
during adolescence (Schacter). Night terrors are a relatively common occurrence that usually only
appears in young children. A night terror will usually occur after the young child goes to bed. They
can actually be hereditary. A new study that took place in Toronto explained that night terrors, in
which children exhibit sudden bouts of extreme fear and screaming an hour or two after going to
sleep, appear to have a strong hereditary component (ABSM). The Canadians have done multiple
studies that have made their way over to the United States and we now have studies of our own.
Scientists have determined that more than 40% of sleep terror cases can likely be attributed to
genetics. "The study brings strong evidence that genetics plays a major role," said principle
researcher Dr. Jacques Montplaisir, a professor of neuroscience and psychiatry at the

Effects Of Sleep Walking And Night Walking
Abstract
One of the most frightening sleep occurrences to a family is when a family member is having a night
terror, or sleep walking. It's difficult to understand how someone could have their eyes open,
walking, and talking but not really being awake. For the person that has the sleeping issue, they have
no memory of the occurrence. However, observing a person going through one of these episodes
makes it appear that the person is witnessing pure horror, not to mention the confusion if they
happen to wake up. This paper will explore the psychophysiological aspects of parasomnia with a
focus on night terrors and sleep walking. Including psychological aspects that pertain to the mind,
and the physiological aspects that pertain to the living system of sleepwalking and night terrors. The
paper will also examine an actual current case of a 4–year–old that currently has night terrors, and
an 18–year–old young adult that sleep walks almost nightly. Finally, the paper will conclude with
current treatments for both night terrors and sleeping walking when the person doesn't just grow out
of the sleep disturbance. Taking a closer look into parasomnias, will offer more clarity in
understanding how important good quality sleep is to all people of all ages.

Sleep Disorders: Night Terrors and Sleepwalking
The one human need that all organisms require is sleep. The body will eventually shut down to get
rest because it requires sleep to function properly. Adequate sleep is what keeps our learning and
memory on point. Sleep–deprived people can't focus their attention to its full potential, because
there is a lack in a basic human need. Studies done on both animals and humans suggest that the
quantity and quality of sleep have a profound impact on learning and memory. According to the
article, "In the study, findings suggest that sleep disturbances can be detected using both subjective
and objective measures and that, for these individuals, fluctuations in sleep duration may have real
consequences for daytime anxiety" (Mullin et al., 2017). When sleep lacks the other areas fall short.

Shadow of the Night
Shadow of the Night
On a freezing, dark blue night of Li, in the Village of Li–Marta. This was an old little village, the
houses were nothing but ash and rubble except an old abandoned barn. The barn had creaking floor
boards and a rotten wooden roof.
In this abandoned barn there lived a young and confident farm boy; his clothes were ragged and full
of holes. The young boy was called Rye named after the agricultural god Ren–Rye.
As Rye was sitting on the creaking floor boards a thought hit him, he remembered something his
mother told him, "be strong like an ox!" Suddenly a gang of raiders came down from the north came
to torch the village to ashes. A horn blew. It was the raider chieftain Kai Tai's way of terrifying the
villagers. Outside the Barn two raiders were battering through the barn door, then Rye's mother said
"hide, son! Hide in the rafters!" from his hiding place Rye saw the doomed doors explode into a
shower of splinters and he saw his mother being dragged away.
Rye remembered those horrendous moments. In frustration he would kick a stone for no purpose or
reason. His father fought till his last breath and defending Rye, valiantly clutching his pitchfork.
Rye had woken up from that dreadful nightmare, he was now somewhere unfamiliar a dark, dark
place, where there was no light. It was the spirit realm of Gahem a quiet but deadly realm to stay in.
Suddenly out of the darkness a shadow appeared the shadow had black clothing and a dark purple

Night, By Eliezer Wiesel
There are many important themes and overtones to the book Night, by Eliezer Wiesel. One of the
major themes from the book includes the protagonist, and author of his memoire, Elie Wiesel's ever
changing relationship with God. An example of this is when Moche the Beadle asked Elie an
important question that would change his life forever, as the basis of his passion and aptitude for
studying the ancient texts and teachings of Judaism, "When Moche the Beadle asked Elie why he
prayed, Elie couldn 't think of an answer that truly described his faith, and thought, "a strange
question, why did I live, why did I breathe?" (Wiesel 14).
The book begins describing Elie's religious teacher of the Kabbalah, Moshe the Beadle, as a "jack of
all trades," or the "go–to man" for advice or jobs. Kabbalah is a type of religious study derived from
Judaism. It is very rare and only practiced by a small part of the Jewish population, this includes
Rabbis. This is because you can only study Kabbalah, written in the Zohar text, or other
subcategories of Jewish mysticism, until you have mastered the Tora and Talmud. Kabbalah is a
very advanced level of religion and interpretation.
The book takes place during the span of World War II, and continues through Elie's perspective, as a
prisoner, persecuted due to his religion as a Jewish student. The first main plot line is when Elie and
his family are taken from their happy, peaceful lives in the small town of Sighet Transylvania, and
are put into a

Theme Of Survival In Night By Elie Wiesel
"I don't know how I survived; I was weak, rather shy; I did nothing to save myself," – Elie Wiesel.
The author of Night, Elie Wiesel, wrote this book to tell the story of what he experienced during the
Holocaust. He writes how when he first walked through the gates of what he soon found out was a
concentration camp, he was immediately separated from his mother and sisters, and moved to a
separate line with his father. He and his father survived the best they could together, until his father
could no longer go on and Elie was left to survive on his own with the rest of the prisoners. He
survived the beatings, harsh weather, hunger, and overall the concentration camps. He lost his
family through the process, but he made it. This makes it very clear that the theme, survival, is
important in the book in order to show Elie's strength and how he fought to stay alive during the
duration of time he was held in concentration camps. First, the theme survival, is very easily shown
in the text when Elie is hurt very badly by a Kapo. "I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the
whip...I had not realized it, but I had fainted." (Wiesel 57–58) Elie Wiesel had caught Idek, the Kapo
in charge of his block, with a Polish girl, and Idek punished him for it. He called out his number in
front of a large group of people, and ordered him to lay down on a crate. He then whipped Elie
twenty–five times. The pain was so unbearable, that Elie had fainted during it, and a group of men
came over

The Night Terror On January 11, 1997, the Winchester family resided in Apple Hill, a small town in
Oregon. Their household only had dinner together every Saturday evening due to the parents
working countless hours to provide for their children. Shirley, the mother worked the nocturnal shift
at Stone Gate Hospital and Robert, the father worked for the FBI. Needless to say, they were
constantly busy, but promised their kids they would have their favorite meal when they got home –
spaghetti and garlic bread. "Oh no, while I was at the mini mart it slipped my mind and I forgot to
buy the bread. Nancy, do you mind going by the store and picking it up for me?" Shirley asked.
"Sure, since I have nothing better to do with my time," Nancy sneered,

Night Terrors Essay
Night terrors affect many children in their early years. Unfortunately, it is a topic that is not
addressed as a key cause of behavior and educational challenges throughout education. This first
journal that is titled, Just a Scary Dream? A Brief Review of Sleep Terrors, Nightmares, and Rapid
Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder, helps describe what night terrors really are. According to
Haupt, M., Sheldon, S., and Loghmanee, D.,
"Sleep terrors typically occur in the first half of the night and in most cases will consistently occur a
specific amount of time after sleep onset. They usually begin with the child suddenly sitting upright
in bed and emitting a powerful, piercing scream. Severe autonomic discharge occurs and manifests

One of the advantages is that the magazine article provided some valuable information about how
night terrors may make children fatigued. Another advantage of this source is that it is reliable. It is
a fairly known online magazine that produces highly qualified information to the readers. With that
being said, there are a few disadvantages to this source. The biggest disadvantage of this source is
that although it is implied, the author does not blatantly state that night terrors correlates to
childhood fatigue. Another disadvantage is that even though the article provides good information, it
is not long enough to get an abundance of information. Even though this source had advantages and
disadvantages, it still served the purpose of providing adequate information for my

Nightmares and Night Terrors
Imagine this. There is a young boy named Toby, and he is three years old. He lives with his mother,
father, and twin sister Anna. They are a happy family and they get along great, so it was completely
unexpected for everyone to wake up to screams coming from the twins' room. It was only half past
ten at night, a couple of hours after they went to bed. The parents rush into the room fearing the
worst, only to see Toby sitting upright in his bed screaming and crying. The mother tries to talk to
Toby and get him to quiet down but he is just scanning the room with his dazed eyes still crying and
yelling. Anna shakes Toby's shoulder telling him to stop yelling but he just throws his arms around

"Night terrors are not technically dreams but are instead sudden fearful reactions that occur during
transportation from one sleep form to another" usually the transition of going from non–REM to
REM sleep (Edwards). NREM, or non–REM, is the stages before REM sleep. And "The longer the
person is in NREM (non–REM) before the night terror strikes, the more petrified they will be when
it occurs" (Richards).
Terrors are called a few different things, like sleep terror, but are known medically as pavor
nocturnus. Like many medical terms, pavor nocturnus is Latin, and it means "fear of the night"
(Strickland). Night terrors are unpredictable and can last anywhere from around ten minutes to thirty
minutes, possibly longer. During these terrifying minutes, the person experiencing the terror may
cry, scream, breathe heavily, sweat, and most of the time their eyes are open (Strickland). Deirdre
Barrett says that "Night terrors are a phenomenon of the deepest parts of non–REM sleep, when the
brain is less active" and because the brain is less active, you are more likely to not remember the
night terror ever happening when you wake up the next morning (Edwards). Although it is more
likely to not remember the terror when you wake up, some can remember pieces of the night terror,
and a few can even remember the whole entire thing (Richards).

Essay On Night Terrors
Night Terrors Madi Lew Psychology 2200 Troy University September 11, 2017 Night terrors, also
known as sleep terrors, are episodes of screaming, intense fear and flailing while still asleep (Mayo
Clinic, 2017). Sleep terrors are considered a parasomnia, a disorder characterized by abnormal
behavior of the nervous system while sleeping, and are often paired with sleepwalking, which is also
a parasomnia. They are characterized by frequent recurrent episodes of intense crying and fear
during sleep (Web MD, 2017). Night terrors typically occur in children ages three to twelve, with
many of the children's night terrors beginning around three and a half (Web MD, 2017). Adults can
develop night terrors, though it is very uncommon (Sleep Association). Night terrors tend to run in
families. Both gender and race are affected equally. Approximately fifteen percent of children
experience night terrors (Sleep Association, 2016). Most of the time, they have no specific causes,
but certain things can cause them from time to time (Web MD, 2017). Some of the things include
stressful life events, fever, sleep deprivation, medications that can affect the brain, and recent
anesthesia given for surgery (Web MD, 2017). Night terrors in adults can be brought on by a deeply
traumatic or emotional event, or it can be developed by a history of depression, anxiety, or bipolar
disorders (Sleep Association, 2016). In children, there is no link to emotional disorders, or disorders
that will be developed later in life (Sleep Association, 2016). A typical night terror begins about
ninety minutes after falling asleep, during stage four of sleep (Web MD, 2017). It begins with a
piercing scream. The child will sit up in bed in a state of panic – eyes open, heart pounding,
perspiring, and breathing rapidly (Sharma, 2006). They could get out of bed and walk or run around,
and some adults are at risk of preforming violent acts during this time. The subject is still in a sleep
like state during night terrors outbursts and can be awoken with some difficulty (Sleep Association,
2016). One sleep terror episode can last anywhere from a couple of seconds to a few minutes, but
some episodes may last up to thirty minutes (Mayo Clinic,

Night Terror Vs Nightmares Research Paper
Nightmares Vs Night Terrors:
People don't really know the difference between nightmares and night terrors unless they experience
it. Nightmares and Night terrors are somewhat similar but different in many ways. A nightmare is
basically a terrifying dream in which the dreamer experiences various feelings such as helplessness,
extreme anxiety, sorrow, etc. Night terrors are a form of sleep disorder in which a person partially
awakens from sleep in a state of terror. (alaska sleep)The reason I choose this topic was because I
think it's something that would be beneficial to learn, I wanted to know the difference between them,
and how the person reacts. All that kind of stuff is interesting to me. It's also really interesting to

Other reasons can be confusion, guilt, disgust, and sadness. (Stanford For Kids) When someone
fears something they are frightened or when someone sees a horror movie they react differently than
when they see a comedy movie. This is because horror movies build up tension which makes us
curious, but also terrified of what might happen or pop out. Nightmares can help us find out fears
that we have, but never knew we had. If it's not fear that causes nightmares than it is most likely
confusion, guilt, disgust, etc. Which can stay with you longer than a nightmare caused by fear.
Having a lot of stress can be one of the main reasons to have a nightmare. Having a nightmare that
is caused by stress is actually helpful, it helps get rid of all the stress, since you let most of your
emotions out through nightmares. When you get so overwhelmed during a nightmare you will
probably be tired afterwards. This means that after your nightmare you will be more relaxed because
all your emotions, stress, and fear is gone. Having nightmares really does help, let out all negative
thoughts or negative things in general. The reasons for having night terrors are actually similar but

Essay On Sleep Deprivation
Death by sleep deprivation is a very relevant and apparent problem. Yet in today's culture people
glorify those who talk of how little sleep they get each night or boast of pulling all–nighters. Many
people don't realize it, but sleep deprivation is often linked to an unknown sleep disorder
(Progressive Medical Center). These disorders come in many different colors and sizes, ranging
from trouble getting to sleep to constant nightmares and waking in confusion. This may not sound
very monstrous however, disorders like insomnia, different parasomnias, and sleep paralysis can be
very scary and ruin people's lives. Lack of sleep puts you at higher risk for heart problems, stroke,
obesity, and even mental impairment. Sleep is crucial to rejuvenate and restore the brain and to
regulate your body's growth development and healing. Sleep disorders are seen as monstrous
because they prevent people from getting a healthy amount of sleep, which is damaging and harmful
in many different aspects. As Beyoncé once said "Having peace, happiness, and healthiness is my
definition of beauty. And you can't have any of that without sleep"(Beyoncé). One of the most
essential elements to a great day is an even better nights sleep. When you wake up, your body has
prepared you for your day. You will wake with better problem solving skills, the ability to make
decisions, more creativity and a larger attention span. If your body is still in the developing stage,
sleep pushes the growth process.

The Fairness Of Faith In Night By Elie Wiesel
Kids tend to rebel against their parents as they grow older. In the memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel recalls
his experiences with his family during World War II. His mother and sisters were taken away from
him as soon as he arrived at Auschwitz, only his father remained. Elie Wiesel witnessed many
terrible events during his first night at camp; the only thing that kept him in line was his father. Elie
Wiesel's father kept him from possibly killing himself. When Elie Wiesel lives in the concentration
camp with his fellow Jews, he begins to question the fairness of God, who he had followed his entire
life. Elie Wiesel lost faith in God, particularly the faith that He would use His divine power to help
him, and he began to rely on his father instead, which gave him more reason to live. When Elie
Wiesel was a kid, he had extreme faith in his religion. Moshe the Beadle is the first person to
question Wiesel's faith. Moshe the Beadle asks Elie Wiesel why he prays; after pondering the
thought, Wiesel replies, "I don't know why" (p. 2). Elie Wiesel does not know the reason why he
prays to God when he doesn't receive anything back. His faith now seems weaker, despite the hours
he devotes to God. God gives him Moshe the Beadle when he wants to study the cabala, and his
father won't help him, but once Wiesel arrives at the concentration camp, God shows no such help as
he did at that time. Although God may have left Wiesel, his father stepped up to take care of him and
show him that all

Relationships In Elie Wiesel's Relationship With His Father
When relationships are challenged, they can either be made stronger or destroyed. Elie Wiesel's
relationship with his father is tested on numerous occasions throughout the time of the Holocaust.
Wiesel writes about his horrific experiences, most of which are in the Nazi concentration camp of
Auschwitz, in his memoir Night. Throughout his time in the concentration camps, Wiesel manages
to stick by his father's side, which is hard to do. In doing so, Wiesel's relationship with his father
prospers, rather than declines. Wiesel's relationship with his father, although difficult to maintain at
times, led to his survival during the Holocaust. As Wiesel writes in the beginning of his memoir, the
relationship between him and his father is impassive and simple. Their relationship never really has
much of an impact on Wiesel during his childhood. Wiesel mentions, "My father was a cultured,
rather unsentimental man" (2). Because Wiesel's father never shows any affection towards Wiesel, it
is hard for him to form any sort of relationship with him whatsoever. Wiesel also writes, "There was
never any display of emotion, even at home. He was more concerned with others than his own
family" (2). Wiesel's father was highly involved in the Jewish Community of Sighet, and he would
even consult in public matters. Due to Wiesel's father's busy schedule, the bond between him and his
son is neglected.
As the enforcements of the Holocaust start appearing in Wiesel's hometown, his father's behavior
begins to slowly change, making it easier for Wiesel to connect with him. While watching other
families being deported, Wiesel, his father, and the rest of his family witness the Hungarian Police
strike old men and women, without reason, with truncheons, for the first time. The next day, as they
are being deported from the ghettos, Wiesel writes, "My father wept. It was the first time I had ever
seen him weep. I had never imagined that he could" (16). Wiesel's prior belief that his father was
emotionless is proven to be wrong before they even arrive at the concentration camps. Wiesel is able
to relate to his father in this moment, for he too is terrified of what lies ahead. As Wiesel and his
family arrive at Birkenau, the Nazis

Night Terrors And Sleep Nightmares
INTRODUCTION A night terror or sleep terror is a very frightful event that a child and parents go
through. Many parents who have a child who experiences night terrors have many questions. What
is a night terror? How did he/she get night terrors? What are the symptoms? What can I do to stop
night terrors? Those are many questions that parents and family members want answered by a
doctor, psychologist or therapist. Unfortunately, they won 't receive many answers Night terrors also
known as sleep terrors can be defined as a "sleeping disorder characterized by high arousal and an
appearance of being terrified" (Meyers, 2014). Night terrors most commonly occur with children.
Many people in general not just parents get confused between a nightmare and a night terror.
Nightmares occur during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep which is a state of sleep where people
are conscious. When a person wakes up from a nightmare they have a "vivid memory of a long
movie like a dream" (nightterrors.org). Night terrors, on the other hand, occur "during NERM–3
sleep, within two or three hours of falling asleep, and are seldom remembered" (Meyers, 2014).
Since the child is in such deep sleep he/she will not remember a night terror. Since the child cannot
remember their dream it makes it hard for doctors and psychologist to figure out what the child is
fearful of, and why it is occurring. Although it is difficult for professionals to diagnose, it is
beneficial to the child not

Night Terrors Essay
Night terrors also known as Pavor Nocturnus can be a scary thing to experience, but they can
happen to anyone no matter what age, race, sex, or religion you may be. This disorder loves
everyone! But not everyone is aware of this disorder and how severe it can affect someone's life. So
in this paper, I am going to shine some light on the situation. I am going to talk about what night
terrors are, who is affected by them, what causes them, night terrors in children, night terrors in
adults, the symptoms, and how they can be treated. Night terrors are a form of a sleep disorder in
which a person experiences episodes of screaming and intense fear while partially still asleep.
According to the Mayo Clinic, "Sleep terrors affect almost 40 ... Show more content on

Some underlying conditions may be restlessness, mood disorders, restless legs syndrome, and many
other conditions.
Childhood night terrors are not an abnormal thing it seems to be part of the immature nervous
system developing. But this may cause the fight–or–flight response to occur at the wrong times.
Children who sleep in unfamiliar places may be more likely to experience night terrors. Children
typically grow out of night terror on their own. However, as stated in HealthLine, there are times
when you should talk to your child's doctor. "Contact a medical professional when: night terrors
happen frequently, they regularly interrupt your child's sleep, your child becomes afraid to go to
sleep, you are worried your child may hurt themselves during a night terror, the night terrors seem to
follow a pattern. Night terrors that continue after your child's teen years or that begin happening as
an adult are also cause for medical concern." night terrors in adults: According to the American
Academy of Family Physicians, "possible causes of night terrors in adults are: post–traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, some depressive disorders, general anxiety disorder, substance
abuse, and particularly alcohol abuse." In Adults, night terrors can be more severe than in children.
They may be accompanied by sleep disturbances, such as insomnia or sleep

Difference Between Night Terrors
I negatively judged the difference between night terrors and nightmares. I related them to each other
and made the assumption that they were different only in the dreams. This was not true and learning
more about night terrors made me change my position on what the difference really was between
night terrors and nightmares. Night terrors are "a sleep disorder characterized by high arousal and an
appearance of being terrified" Myers (2014). Nightmares, whoever, occur during the early morning
REM while night terrors occur during the REM 3 stage of sleep. In REM 3 the brain is more active
which is why "night terror patients showed an inhibition of outward expressions of aggression and a
predominance of anxiety, depression, tendencies obsessive–compulsive/,

Essay On Sleep Disorders In Children With Autism
Treating Sleep Disorders in Children with Autism
Several studies have been conducted that take a look at treatments for children with autism suffering
from sleep disorders. Sleep disorders may even be more common in children with autism spectrum
disorders. There's been countless of different types of treatments, but one treatment in particular is
Melatonin. Melatonin helps control your sleep and wake cycles. Studies have shown that melatonin
is promised in treating sleep and insomnia in children with autism. This literature review will look at
how melatonin has a major positive effect on kids suffering sleeping disorders, including suffering
from autism.

The participants were interviewed extensively about their sleep histories. A number of different
problems around sleep are observed in children. They can include bedtime tantrums, night walking,
nightmares, sleep terrors. We can't be certain that these sleep terrors will follow into children's
adulthood lives but with studies like this, there's a possibility we can make changes. Treatment for
sleep terrors usually begins by telling parents to wait and to see if they disappear. Afterwards if the
sleep terrors are more frequently, antidepressants will be recommended for treatment. These
antidepressants are supposed to help, they reduce the time someone spends in deep sleep, which are
the stages 3 and 4. Unfortunately antidepressants have not showed to have effectiveness on sleep
terror.
Others studies have looked at caregiver spillover effects. In these studies it goes more in depth on
how sleep problems in children with autism most of the time are under–recognized and because of
we don't recognize the issue it leads to it being under–treated. Identifying treatment value
accounting for health effects on family members (spillovers) could improve the perceived cost–
effectiveness of interventions to improve child sleep habits (J. Mick Tilford 2015). Participants for

Creative Story : A Short Story
"Hi kid. How was your day?" the sound of her father greeted Maddie as walked through the
doorway. How was your day? It made her pause. That was such an everyday question but after
everything that happened, it became quite loaded. Throughout the entire day, Maddie had constantly
felt eyes on her. Watching. Judging. Wondering. Sympathizing. And everything in between. It
seemed like everyone heard the news. Everyone had something to say about it except no one had
dared to tell it directly to her face. Realizing that a long time had passed, she looked up at her father
and answered, "It was fine." Fine. Probably the furthest from where she was at. But she could keep
pretending. Right?
"Are you coming with us?" her father asked, hopefully.
"I don't know. I have a lot to do."
"Maddie, honey, I know that it has been hard on you. But I know that Tori would want you to come.
You haven't visited since the first night." "I'll think about it." Maddie said, trying not to give her
father too much hope.
"Well, uh––" he was cut off by Maddie running up the stairs. He shook his head and continued on to
make dinner.
She needed a break. She ran towards her room and slammed the door. It was a mess, clothes thrown
everywhere, papers littered the floor... everything skewed out of place. She dropped her book bag
down and flopped onto her bed. It has been a long couple of day. Really long. She knew that she
probably... no... was being selfish. Her mother spent long hours at the hospital watching over

Night, Hope, By Elie Wiesel
Forty–two years after entering the concentration camp for the first time, Elie Wiesel remarked, "Just
as man cannot live without dreams, he cannot live without hope" (Nobel Lecture 1). This means a
lot from someone who endured almost two years of the terror in the WWII concentration camps.
During these two years, Elie endured the sadness of leaving his former life and faith behind, the pain
of living off of scraps of bread, and the trepidation of the "selections", where he almost lost his
father. He watched the hanging of innocent people, was beat by Kapos and guards time after time,
and marched in a death march right after having a foot surgery. Through all of this, he survived
because he remained hopeful. Hope was all the Jewish people ... Show more content on

Even as the war got closer, the Jewish people remained hopeful and they tried to see the good in
things, as absurd as it sounds. For example, when they were forced into the ghettos, people looked
on the bright side, and found good things about them. Elie, looking back on the ghettos experience
stated, "People thought this was a good thing. We would no longer have to look at all those hostile
faces, endure those hate–filled stares" (Wiesel 12). So, even after the hate of the Germans had
reached Sighet, the people were still thinking positive. They never even ventured to think about how
situations could turn negative. When things did get negative, and they learned that they would have
to be transported, they started having more pessimistic thinking, but they still were counting on a
miracle to pull through for them. When Elie asked his father when they were expected to depart, he
replied, "'The day after tomorrow. Unless...things work out. A miracle, perhaps...'" (Wiesel 18). This
shows that Elie's family still had hope as they were going to be transported. They were more worried
than they had been before, but they still had hope for a miracle. Overall, at the beginning of the book
the characters were very hopeful and optimistic, even though scary events were happening around
them. Next, as the book progressed,

The Night By Elie Wiesel
In Night by Elie Wiesel, the author reflects on his own experience of being separated from his
family and eventually his own religion. This separation was not by any means voluntary, they were
forced apart during the Holocaust. Wiesel was a Jew when the invasion of Hungary occurred and the
Germans ripped members of his religion away from their home in Sighet. A once peaceful
community where Wiesel learned to love the Kabbalah was now home to only dust and lost
memories. Most members of that Jewish community were never to return, hell greeted them with
open arms as they walked through the now rusty gates of Auschwitz. In order to survive
unimaginable circumstances that were enforced in these camps, a boy had to hang on to his
humanity. But by no means did humanity stay with the boy, being subjected to the horror of
concentration camps, Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Elie Wiesel saw first–hand how members of
other communities attempt to silence opposing voices. All of the pain that Wiesel saw inspired him
to keep watch and tell stories for people who wouldn't live on to tell them for their own families.
Stories are what keeps a person alive and through Eliezer's words that he puts down many are able
to get a sense of closure in knowing what occurred at these camps. One story occurred on the first
train ride away from home, a lady named Madame Schächter was beaten up for crying out against
imminent death, unseen by others. She stayed like that all through the day, dumb, absent,

Sleep And Non Rem Sleep Disorders
Parasomnias
Introduction
Parasomnias is a variety is sleep disorders that cause abnormal behavior in brain activity. Para
means "faulty", and the Latin origin of somnia, "somnus" means "sleep" (source 5). About 1% to
10% of the population experiences those sleeping disorders, most of which are children. This
sleeping disorder usually occurs during the transition from one sleeping stage to another; the two
sleeping stages include Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and non–REM sleep (source 4). Those
that have parasomnias, especially children, may experience many things that include somnambulism
(sleepwalking), somniloquy (sleep talking), pavor nocturmus (night terrors), and sleep enuresis (bed
wetting); however, some can be extreme and can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Non–REM Sleep Disorders
Arousal Disorders Confusional arousals usually occur in the first half of the sleeping cycle (source
1). They are characterized by the sudden awakening during the night with feelings of disorientation
and extreme confusion. Some, especially adults, may display violent or improper acts, while those
that experience them the most, children, usually begin to cry (source 3). These arousals are also
called sleep drunkenness because those that experience these symptoms don't remember what they
have done after waking up. The motor behavior is affected for those with this disorder; it is often
regarded as normal, simple behavior. Sometimes, however, those experiencing the arousal disorder
could become aggressive and sexually active without knowing it. This sexual behavior is often
referred to as sexsomnia. This disorder is prevalent amongst children younger than the age of 13,
and it begins to decrease as the age increases (source 2). Episodes could last up to 45 minutes
(source 5), and attempts to wake up those that are experiencing an episode could actually increase
the parasomnia effects (source 4); arousals could be influenced by the lack of sleep, medications that
include tranquilizers and antidepressants, and infections of the body. Family history and genetic
factors, in addition, could play a major part in causing the

It was was a normal night as usual for Phil and his family. Wash up, eat dinner, say a prayer and go

family went to sleep that night and Phil could not fall asleep, so he went to get a glass of water, his
mouth was dry, and proceeded toward the kitchen. He looked at the dark night sky and saw
something in the shadows, a bright light. however he responded to this unusual bright light with a
melancholy demeanor. Phil went upstairs and walked into his room and laid back down on his bed,
next to his wife, his children downstairs in their rooms sleeping happily forever. Phil fell asleep,
however a few minutes later Phil woke up struggling to breath, smoke in the air, and heat nearly
burning his flesh as the house was engulfed in flames. To most many would react in a startled

Night Terrors "Every night around 10:30 Billy Bolts out of bed and starts screaming uncontrollably.
I often find him running around his room looking frantic. I try to hold him, but he just pushes me
away. I don't understand what is happening. He looks terrified, and it frightens me" (Mindell 257).
The above quote represents a classic episode of night terrors, or sleep terrors (the terms are
interchangeable). Night terrors – called incubus in adults and pavor nocturnus in children (Durand
31) – fall into a larger category of sleep disorders called parasomnias, which are sleep disorders that
are classified by abnormal or paranormal brain activity (psychnet). It's also considered a disorder of
"partial arousal", where the child is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, out of those same children, for 100 of them (67.1%), the night terrors disappeared during that
age range – ages 3–10 years (Laberge, et al 6). There were no gender differences noted for night
terrors in this study – they appear to affect boys and girls almost equally (Laberge, et al 7). Children
with night terrors (also children with sleep talking and teeth grinding, among a few others) had a
significantly higher anxiety score than did children with some of the other parasomnias (i.e.:
enuresis) (Laberge 7). Family issues didn't seem to affect any of the parasomias (Laberge, et al 8).
No one knows exactly what parasomnias are, and unfortunately, no one knows exactly what causes
them, either. In one study I read, it was suggested that these occurrences are related to a delayed
maturation of the central nervous system (Fleiss 30). This was the only reading that I saw this in.
However, it has been discovered that parasomnias have a genetic link – they run in families. For
example, if your child has night terrors, it is very likely that someone else in your family had either
night terrors or some other form of parasomnia (confusional arousals, sleepwalking or sleep talking)
(Mindell 263). Also, they appear to be developmental, with children seeming to experience them at
certain ages. There are other possible contributing factors as well, which I will list here: Sleep

Night Terrors In Childhood
In childhood, emotions are what rule us. Normally night terrors are controlled by the subconscious.
Basically, whatever is feared, changed, worrying, or even frustration, can have an effect on the child
leading to a night terror. Children are heavily influenced by their parents, this is why in a separation
or divorce the child often suffers severely, in cases with the children who also suffer from night
terrors, this is an even more difficult time. Any emotional, physical, or mental changes could be
considered stressors or triggers – cause of the night terrors. In

What May Trigger Night Terrors?
What May Trigger Night Terrors? Night terrors are a type of parasomnia, that cause screaming,
intense fear, and flailing, while still asleep. These episodes are most common but not limited to
children between ages of four to twelve, for they can also still occur in adults. Mostly children are
affected by this parasomnia, but only three to six percent of them have these night terrors, and the
percentage of occurrences in adults are lower. Some studies show that there are some variables, such
as tiredness, or drugs, may cause a development of these disturbances during sleep. While most will
grow out of their sleep terrors, some may not, and must find different ways to control or reduce their
chances of having night terrors. Usually, night terrors are not normally due to psychiatric disorders,
so with that in mind, it is logical to assume that they are often triggered by certain environmental
factors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also known as night terrors, these episodes are often paired with other prarsomnias, such as
sleepwalking. A Parasomnia is an undesired occurrence during sleep, such as sleep talking, sleep
walking, and night terrors. During these sleep terror episodes, an individual might kick and thrash
around while still unconscious, stare wide eyed, scream or shout, and so on. Night terrors are said to
be able to occur for a period of up to 30 minutes, once about that much time has passed, the person
will once again lye down and go to sleep. Once the next day comes around the corner, usually the
child or adult will not have any recollection of the event, but they at times remember small

"Highwayman, slow down or force will be a factor of this chase." George wittingly says,
"Ok, if we have to!" George shoots the third redcoat. Now only one redcoat remains. The last red

Customer's Always Right?
Have you heard of the Wal–Mart lingo "customer's always right?" Well, the lingo only work for
Wal–Mart because the notion is far from that at Roadrunners or "Roadies." I started working night
shift at Roadies in the beginning. And then moved to swing shift to opening shift at 4AM, Mondays
thru Friday. So, I know the whole operation like the back of my hand. Roadies in Wapato, is known
for its hot deli food. The convenience store is a one quick stop shop when you're in a hurry, for a
quick bite to eat, or a convenient stop for gas when traveling afar or when the gas tank is just simply
low on fuel. Especially with an icy cold hard beverage (for 21 years old and over) that'll do with hot
wing justice. The place offers a totally different atmosphere throughout the day. It's a completely
different operation from mornings, middays, and nights. The customers vary from different times of
day and night and I can almost predict the type (crazy and crazier) of customers at the same time of
the month as well.
Customers at Roadies range from somewhat normal and polite to disrespectful. The customers in the
morning are mainly farm workers and 95% don't speak English. So, I make do with the language
barrier. A coworker of mine, Sarah Divina asked, "Will it hurt them (Mexicans) to at least try to
learn some English? I can understand if they're new in this country, but most of them had been here
for years." At first, it felt like I could only perform my job with one hand behind my back.

Nature And Nature : The Physical Characteristics Of Nature
When the word "nature" comes to mind, (at least to me and google images), scenes of thick, dense
forests with light barely prevailing through the canopy, birds of paradise and their fruitful colors
bathing in the tropical sun, and every imaginable shade of green encompassing the premise first
come to mind. But for a girl born and raised in the Entertainment Capital of the World known no
other than Las Vegas, the most natural things I have ever seen are the palm trees in my very
backyard and the desert sands that occupy everything else. But just because my take on the physical
characteristics of nature is narrower than others, does not mean I cannot appreciate nature on a more
spiritual scale.
Although most of my life takes place indoors, from attending school, to cheer practice, to even
visiting the grocery store, I often find myself turning to nature as my getaway in many spare
moments. When the chance presents itself, I occasionally will just sit in my backyard, embracing
nature and all of its glory, from its sunlight hitting my skin or its slight breezes that balance out the
Vegas heat. I may even bring a novel with me and read in peace, or more simply rest my body and
mind and become one with my nature. The serenity of that time and place, of me enjoying what I
call nature, creates an escape for my mind to wander and explore, and most importantly forget. My
favorite time to do this is at night; where the scorching heat has now decreased to a cool nighttime

Causes Of Night Terrors
If you have ever been awakened by someone screaming in panic, heavily sweating, and tossing
around in their sleep, you have most likely experienced someone having night terrors. Night terrors
is defined as a sleep disorder associated with arousal of terror or dread (Healthline). Occasionally,
night terrors can happen to adults, but they are most common in children ages 3–12 (WebMD).
However, higher percentage of children do grow out of night terrors while entering the teenage
years. Unlike a nightmare, victims of night terrors have no recollection of the episode. The triggers
of night terrors are not fully understood. They occur equally between boys and girls and are
outgrown by adolescence. Some theoretical reasons for episodes of night ... Show more content on

Terrors seem to be more common in children with elders who have experienced terrors, it's
hereditary. Night terrors does not only affect children. Adults can be victims, but it is close to rare.
Adults who suffer from night terrors usually have a history of bipolar disorder, depressive disorders,
and anxiety disorders (Sleep Education). If you are unsure if someone is experiencing night terrors,
be sure to pay attention to the symptoms. If the victim begins to sit upright in bed, scream or shout,
perform dangerous actions, are hard to wake up, are confused when woken up, or not able to
remember what took place, they are more than likely suffering from night terrors (Sleep Education).
Night terrors are similar to nightmares, but it does have it's differences. When you have a nightmare,
you are able to remember some or most of the dream and are able to interpret it. With night terrors,
the victim has no recollection on the episode and seem confused when asked about it. In most cases
along with night terrors, victims can suffer from exhaustion. When having an episode of night
terrors, you are unconsciously awake, meaning you don't know you are awake. This can make the
body and brain tired from reoccurring

Themes And Change In Barn Burning By William Faulkner
In "Barn Burning" by William Faulkner, the setting of the story plays a very important role. Sarty
struggles with the conflict of following his dad in completing illegal acts, or to follow his moral
beliefs and disobey his father. When the Snopes family arrives at Major de Spain's mansion, Sarty
has hope that his father will change his tendencies to burn down barns. Faulkner also shows a
contrast between daytime and nighttime; during the day, Abner is less likely to do illegal things, and
during the night is when he begins to act illegally again. At the end of the story, Sarty is at the top of
a hill at midnight thinking about the changes that have occurred in his life. Through the use of
location and time of day, Sarty's thoughts and emotions are shown within many different situations.
Faulkner uses time of day to compare the different activities that Sarty and his father are involved
in. During the day, Sarty is very hopeful that his father will change his illegal actions; also, during
the day Sarty is mostly working, or in the courthouse. Soon after the Snopes family arrives at Major
de Spain's mansion, Abner ruins a rug inside the house. Abner goes to court and receives a
punishment of paying Major de Spain twenty bushels of corn; Sarty hopes that this punishment is
enough to change his father's illegal actions. As Sarty works on the fields, he thinks to himself,
"maybe this is the end of it. Maybe even that twenty bushels that seems hard to pay for just a rug

Summary Of ' The ' O Clock News On The Eyes Darted Around...
His eyes darted around the circle. There were twelve objects surrounding him. Without even
realizing it, he was about to make the most important decision of his life. This was probably the
most bizarre collection of items anyone will ever see. A book, a chicken leg, a ruler and a lipstick
would have no business being together in any other circumstances. After a few more minutes, he
crawled toward the seal. The man and the woman standing around the circle tensed in anticipation.
At the last moment, he stopped, turned toward the miniature bale of straws, and picked it up. The
woman stifled a groan, and the man turned away in exasperation. And just like that, the man and the
woman have decided that their one–year–old son will never amount to anything.
For as long as I care to remember, I have believed that there is no such thing as "free will".
The 7'O Clock News on September 2, 2001 shook me to my core. The Chinese anchors shuffled

alone was disgusted. On the other hand, while Griffin does not specifically comment on the effects

popular harsh German pedagogy masterminded the monster that was later responsible for the crimes
against humanity. I first read B.F. Skinner's Beyond

The Psychological Effects Of Night Terrors

  • 1. The Psychological Effects Of Night Terrors Within a week of my birth, my parents sent me to a myopically conservative ship community to prevent exposure of liberalism to me. Unfortunately, I felt nothing but alienation due to my inability to relate with my peers, but relocation was unattainable. My deep desperation to escape my world of torture caused the onset of night–terrors. Because of the potential violent qualities of night–terrors, I decided to keep a journal to provide future references and to monitor my psychological changes. At age twelve, each community member is delegated a daily job by the ship's captain. I never understood how the other children stayed on task so easily, for I constantly found myself entranced with the whirling clouds and soaring birds in the sky ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Time passed differently in the empty bunkers, making it impossible to anticipate the cold, numbing winter nights. In time, a mandatory work check–in forced me to leave my haven, revealing an immense change in the community's atmosphere. Everything on the ship had been tinted grey, an ominous mist hung in the air, and every noise seemed to be muffled. Perhaps the most unsettling deviation I saw was the sky's morphed composition. Where the abundance of beautiful life and whimsical clouds once used to be, now was flooded with grotesque cloud forms and hideous birds that screeched distorted notes from lullabies that once calmed me. The sense of impending doom presented by the sky had urged me to ask the captain if a pejorative forecast was expected. The captain asked me how detrimental weather was a concern of mine, because he claimed to see nothing but a clear sky and serene sunrays. "Quit seeking attention so avidly and carry on just like the rest of your buddies," he spat. It was the most peculiar thing, for I did not feel so much as a twinge of sorrow after the captain spoke to me in such an overtly condescending manner. Suddenly, it occurred to me that I had been void of any emotion since the onset of winter's frigid weather. I had become a human shell–my senses and emotions both frozen. One sole thing remained in which my energy was invested–an intense longing for a lighthouse to illuminate my face once ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Characters In Night By Elie Wiesel Do you think you've ever felt pain and fear in your life? The people in the Holocaust definitely have. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, the main character faces many struggles from the beginning to the end of the book. Elie, the main character, changes dramatically because of his experiences in Auschwitz and the struggles he went through at the camp. Before Elie was sent to the concentration camp, he exhibited many character traits. These include being observant, hopeful for the future, and faithful in what he believes in. On page 3 of Night Wiesel wrote, "Physically, he was as awkward as a clown. His waiflike shyness made people smile. As for me, I liked his wide, dreamy eyes, gazing off into the distance." Throughout the book, Elie observed how people looked and how they acted. In the quote above he is observing how Moshie the Beadle looks and acts. He also does this while in the ghetto so he won't get beaten for acting out of line. Also in the book Wiesel wrote, "Confidence soared. Suddenly we felt free of the previous nights' terrors. We gave thanks to God" (27). This was when Elie was just getting off the train to head to Auschwitz after being stuck in the train for many nights. Like the quote says, he was very happy to be let out of that train car because there was no room to move and hardly anything to eat and drink. What he didn't know is that he was just being lead to something much worse. Elie was hopeful that all he was going to do there was work in decent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. And Night Terrors And Nightmares Nightmares Imagine getting out of bed, drinking your daily cup of coffee and going about your day until you realize you are still asleep, and everything happening was unreal. This is called a false awakening, having one every so often is not something to fret about. Although the famous philosopher Bertrand Russell, claimed to have gone through around a hundred false awakenings when awakening from his slumber, which made it hard for him to indicate the difference between a dream or reality. There are many different types of nightmares and countless different ways humans react to them. Nightmares produce very discomforting and disturbing images causing a lack of sleep, high amounts of stress or anxiety and could provoke mental health problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Night terrors usually occur fifteen minutes to one hour after going to sleep during non–rapid eye movement sleep. This happens before the hours of REM sleep. The longer the person is in NREM before the night terror strikes the more scared a person will be when it occurs. Most people will wake up gasping, moaning, crying, screaming, and breathing rapidly. Numerous people will sit up in bed with a "wide eyed terror filled stare" this is a panic often lasting anywhere from five to twenty minutes. With nightmares, children can often recall the experience with detail. On the other hand, with night terrors people usually have no remembrance of the experience the next morning. Also, night terrors can generate a heart rate of 160 to 170 beats per minute. Amazingly, this is much faster than the normal heart rate that can be handled under most stressful circumstances. People can and have caused injury to themselves and others through their actions during night terrors. From my reading, "in 1943, Joan Kiger began fending off "shadowy figures" during a night terror, and while sleepwalking she shot and killed her father and her 6–year–old brother. William Pollard, a known sleepwalker, dreamed he was being attacked, only to awake and see that he had bludgeoned his daughter to death with a flashlight." As you can see, these dark experiences can cause us to do unspeakable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. A Short Story : A Story? Jahzara was laying on her gigantic king sized bed daydreaming about the man she loved but who was forbidden to be with. Her mom, Oadira, walked in and saw her staring at the ceiling, blushing and smiling uncontrollably. "Are you thinking about that boy again?" said Oadira. "He's not just a boy mom," said Jahzara, "I love him". "A princess needs to marry a prince, not a dirty knight who's never around." Oadira would say as the tension between the rose. "I'm 19," said Jahzara, "I can love whoever I choose, you can't just control my life like I'm a child." After that, she stormed off to the hill she always used to go to as a kid when she got mad. It was a calming place for her, she could see all the buildings, the beautiful full green trees, bugs buzzing all around her, birds chirping in the distance, the vast blue sky occasionally with puffy white clouds, but best of all, no people, till today. "I can't believe my mom actually thinks we'd stay away from each other," said Jahzara. "She just doesn't want her beautifully tall, dark skinned daughter with short curly black hair, delicious chocolaty brown eyes and plump lips to end up with the wrong man," said Faarees while taking her hair in his rough manly hand, twirling it between his fingers and staring deep into her eyes. The rest of the night was extraordinarily romantic, Faarees brought Jahzara freshly picked red roses from deep in the forest to go with the picnic they had that consisted mostly of meat but also some ... • 9. The Fears Of Fear : Fear Of Darkness I've always had fears in the back of my mind but as I've got older I have come realize that they were childish and silly thoughts that stopped me from achieving big things. The first fear I had was Nycophobia or in other words the fear of darkness. I could distinctly remember when I could see shadows on the wall which in my mind were monsters, ghosts. The fear of darkness is a common phobia to have but to me it was more than just a fear it was an integral part of my life. Most young children can go to bed and fall asleep without any hassle, however in my case going to bed was like being sent to death. There I would lay on my bed in a dark room when I would see a shadow zoom past the wall causing me to scream like a little girl, it was embarrassing. Then again, this was only one of the encounters I had with 'spirit world' but there was one encounter and this was the worst of all, it was that scary it could frighten a grown man. And it all started at my little old grans house. My granny's house lay on a narrow street next to the graveyard which really spooked me out, however I did have my granny to look after me, right? No, instead of sleeping in my grans nice cosy bedroom that night I had to sleep downstairs on my own in my uncle's old room. This room was the complete opposite of my grans it was a cold and smelly old room which was almost non liveable. Despite this, I did have a huge double bed all to myself. I arrived and I was dreading it, it is not normal to leave a 5 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Examples Of Father Son Relationship In Night By Elie Wiesel Night by Elie Wiesel is a short book about Wiesel's experiences in the Auschwitz sub–camps. The theme developed by Wiesel throughout the text is the idea of loss and dehumanization, which are prevalent during the entire book. Wiesel writes this book from his own perspective, but he alters the character slightly to distance himself from the horrible events that occurred. The book is organized into parts, each with differing times which in turn cover the five years of his experiences. This essay will describe the relationship between Eliezer and his father, Schlomo. The relationship development aspects I will discuss occurred at the fire pits of Birkenau, the constant beating of Schlomo at Buna, and finally, Schlomo's death in Buchenwald. Eliezer and Schlomo's father–son relationship is the reason Elie had hope throughout the Holocaust. After the selection at the arrival of Auschwitz., Elie and his father had to walk towards the fire pits, where babies, children, and adults are being thrown in. Elie and his father thought that this was their fate as well. Such a traumatizing event brings forth a critical quote spoken from Schlomo, "You should have gone with your mother". This in context, references to the selection, as Schlomo did not want to see his son die. Another idea used to portray this extreme idea of mental torture was a thought from Eliezer, where he wants to throw himself into the electric fence to escape the brutal death of burning in the pits. This started ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Night Terrors : The Causes And Effects Of Night Terrors When you are awoken to a screaming child, sweating with a rapid heart rate. See tears forming in their eyes. Try to shake them awake but they are stuck in a deep sleep. This is what many parents are faced with every night from their children. Night terrors can potentially be a very scary scene that someday might take place. Night terrors can also be classified as sleep terrors. It is a sleep disorder causing feelings of terror or dread, and typically occurs during the first hours of stage three–four rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Sleep terrors usually begin in children between the ages of three and twelve, and usually stop during adolescence (Schacter). Night terrors are a relatively common occurrence that usually only appears in young children. A night terror will usually occur after the young child goes to bed. They can actually be hereditary. A new study that took place in Toronto explained that night terrors, in which children exhibit sudden bouts of extreme fear and screaming an hour or two after going to sleep, appear to have a strong hereditary component (ABSM). The Canadians have done multiple studies that have made their way over to the United States and we now have studies of our own. Scientists have determined that more than 40% of sleep terror cases can likely be attributed to genetics. "The study brings strong evidence that genetics plays a major role," said principle researcher Dr. Jacques Montplaisir, a professor of neuroscience and psychiatry at the ... • 15. Effects Of Sleep Walking And Night Walking Abstract One of the most frightening sleep occurrences to a family is when a family member is having a night terror, or sleep walking. It's difficult to understand how someone could have their eyes open, walking, and talking but not really being awake. For the person that has the sleeping issue, they have no memory of the occurrence. However, observing a person going through one of these episodes makes it appear that the person is witnessing pure horror, not to mention the confusion if they happen to wake up. This paper will explore the psychophysiological aspects of parasomnia with a focus on night terrors and sleep walking. Including psychological aspects that pertain to the mind, and the physiological aspects that pertain to the living system of sleepwalking and night terrors. The paper will also examine an actual current case of a 4–year–old that currently has night terrors, and an 18–year–old young adult that sleep walks almost nightly. Finally, the paper will conclude with current treatments for both night terrors and sleeping walking when the person doesn't just grow out of the sleep disturbance. Taking a closer look into parasomnias, will offer more clarity in understanding how important good quality sleep is to all people of all ages. Keywords: Slow–Wave Sleep, REM Sleep, Memory, Learning, Sleep Deprivation, Parasomnia, Night Terrors, and Sleep Walking Sleep Disorders: Night Terrors and Sleepwalking The one human need that all organisms require is sleep. The body will eventually shut down to get rest because it requires sleep to function properly. Adequate sleep is what keeps our learning and memory on point. Sleep–deprived people can't focus their attention to its full potential, because there is a lack in a basic human need. Studies done on both animals and humans suggest that the quantity and quality of sleep have a profound impact on learning and memory. According to the article, "In the study, findings suggest that sleep disturbances can be detected using both subjective and objective measures and that, for these individuals, fluctuations in sleep duration may have real consequences for daytime anxiety" (Mullin et al., 2017). When sleep lacks the other areas fall short. Good ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Shadow of the Night Shadow of the Night On a freezing, dark blue night of Li, in the Village of Li–Marta. This was an old little village, the houses were nothing but ash and rubble except an old abandoned barn. The barn had creaking floor boards and a rotten wooden roof. In this abandoned barn there lived a young and confident farm boy; his clothes were ragged and full of holes. The young boy was called Rye named after the agricultural god Ren–Rye. As Rye was sitting on the creaking floor boards a thought hit him, he remembered something his mother told him, "be strong like an ox!" Suddenly a gang of raiders came down from the north came to torch the village to ashes. A horn blew. It was the raider chieftain Kai Tai's way of terrifying the villagers. Outside the Barn two raiders were battering through the barn door, then Rye's mother said "hide, son! Hide in the rafters!" from his hiding place Rye saw the doomed doors explode into a shower of splinters and he saw his mother being dragged away. Rye remembered those horrendous moments. In frustration he would kick a stone for no purpose or reason. His father fought till his last breath and defending Rye, valiantly clutching his pitchfork. Rye had woken up from that dreadful nightmare, he was now somewhere unfamiliar a dark, dark place, where there was no light. It was the spirit realm of Gahem a quiet but deadly realm to stay in. Suddenly out of the darkness a shadow appeared the shadow had black clothing and a dark purple hood, this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Night, By Eliezer Wiesel There are many important themes and overtones to the book Night, by Eliezer Wiesel. One of the major themes from the book includes the protagonist, and author of his memoire, Elie Wiesel's ever changing relationship with God. An example of this is when Moche the Beadle asked Elie an important question that would change his life forever, as the basis of his passion and aptitude for studying the ancient texts and teachings of Judaism, "When Moche the Beadle asked Elie why he prayed, Elie couldn 't think of an answer that truly described his faith, and thought, "a strange question, why did I live, why did I breathe?" (Wiesel 14). The book begins describing Elie's religious teacher of the Kabbalah, Moshe the Beadle, as a "jack of all trades," or the "go–to man" for advice or jobs. Kabbalah is a type of religious study derived from Judaism. It is very rare and only practiced by a small part of the Jewish population, this includes Rabbis. This is because you can only study Kabbalah, written in the Zohar text, or other subcategories of Jewish mysticism, until you have mastered the Tora and Talmud. Kabbalah is a very advanced level of religion and interpretation. The book takes place during the span of World War II, and continues through Elie's perspective, as a prisoner, persecuted due to his religion as a Jewish student. The first main plot line is when Elie and his family are taken from their happy, peaceful lives in the small town of Sighet Transylvania, and are put into a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Theme Of Survival In Night By Elie Wiesel "I don't know how I survived; I was weak, rather shy; I did nothing to save myself," – Elie Wiesel. The author of Night, Elie Wiesel, wrote this book to tell the story of what he experienced during the Holocaust. He writes how when he first walked through the gates of what he soon found out was a concentration camp, he was immediately separated from his mother and sisters, and moved to a separate line with his father. He and his father survived the best they could together, until his father could no longer go on and Elie was left to survive on his own with the rest of the prisoners. He survived the beatings, harsh weather, hunger, and overall the concentration camps. He lost his family through the process, but he made it. This makes it very clear that the theme, survival, is important in the book in order to show Elie's strength and how he fought to stay alive during the duration of time he was held in concentration camps. First, the theme survival, is very easily shown in the text when Elie is hurt very badly by a Kapo. "I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the whip...I had not realized it, but I had fainted." (Wiesel 57–58) Elie Wiesel had caught Idek, the Kapo in charge of his block, with a Polish girl, and Idek punished him for it. He called out his number in front of a large group of people, and ordered him to lay down on a crate. He then whipped Elie twenty–five times. The pain was so unbearable, that Elie had fainted during it, and a group of men came over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Their household only had dinner together every Saturday evening due to the parents working countless hours to provide for their children. Needless to say, they were constantly busy, but promised their kids they would have their favorite meal when they got home – spaghetti and garlic bread. Unfortunately, it is a topic that is not addressed as a key cause of behavior and educational challenges throughout education. This first journal that is titled, Just a Scary Dream? A Brief Review of Sleep Terrors, Nightmares, and Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder, helps describe what night terrors really are. According to Haupt, M., Sheldon, S., and Loghmanee, D., "Sleep terrors typically occur in the first half of the night and in most cases will consistently occur a specific amount of time after sleep onset. They usually begin with the child suddenly sitting upright in bed and emitting a powerful, piercing scream. Severe autonomic discharge occurs and manifests as wide open ... He lives with his mother, father, and twin sister Anna. They are a happy family and they get along great, so it was completely unexpected for everyone to wake up to screams coming from the twins' room. It was only half past ten at night, a couple of hours after they went to bed. The parents rush into the room fearing the worst, only to see Toby sitting upright in his bed screaming and crying. The mother tries to talk to Toby and get him to quiet down but he is just scanning the room with his dazed eyes still crying and yelling. "Night terrors are not technically dreams but are instead sudden fearful reactions that occur during transportation from one sleep form to another" usually the transition of going from non–REM to REM sleep (Edwards). NREM, or non–REM, is the stages before REM sleep. And "The longer the person is in NREM (non–REM) before the night terror strikes, the more petrified they will be when it occurs" (Richards). Terrors are called a few different things, like sleep terror, but are known medically as pavor nocturnus. Like many medical terms, pavor nocturnus is Latin, and it means "fear of the night" (Strickland). Night terrors are unpredictable and can last anywhere from around ten minutes to thirty minutes, possibly longer. During these terrifying minutes, the person experiencing the terror may cry, scream, breathe heavily, sweat, and most of the time their eyes are open (Strickland). Deirdre Barrett says that "Night terrors are a phenomenon of the deepest parts of non–REM sleep, when the brain is less active" and because the brain is less active, you are more likely to not remember the night terror ever happening when you wake up the next morning (Edwards). Although it is more likely to not remember the terror when you wake up, some can remember pieces of the night terror, and a few can even remember the whole entire thing (Richards). ... • 29. Essay On Night Terrors Night Terrors Madi Lew Psychology 2200 Troy University September 11, 2017 Night terrors, also known as sleep terrors, are episodes of screaming, intense fear and flailing while still asleep (Mayo Clinic, 2017). Sleep terrors are considered a parasomnia, a disorder characterized by abnormal behavior of the nervous system while sleeping, and are often paired with sleepwalking, which is also a parasomnia. They are characterized by frequent recurrent episodes of intense crying and fear during sleep (Web MD, 2017). Night terrors typically occur in children ages three to twelve, with many of the children's night terrors beginning around three and a half (Web MD, 2017). Adults can develop night terrors, though it is very uncommon (Sleep Association). Night terrors tend to run in families. Both gender and race are affected equally. Approximately fifteen percent of children experience night terrors (Sleep Association, 2016). Most of the time, they have no specific causes, but certain things can cause them from time to time (Web MD, 2017). Some of the things include stressful life events, fever, sleep deprivation, medications that can affect the brain, and recent anesthesia given for surgery (Web MD, 2017). Night terrors in adults can be brought on by a deeply traumatic or emotional event, or it can be developed by a history of depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorders (Sleep Association, 2016). In children, there is no link to emotional disorders, or disorders that will be developed later in life (Sleep Association, 2016). A typical night terror begins about ninety minutes after falling asleep, during stage four of sleep (Web MD, 2017). It begins with a piercing scream. The child will sit up in bed in a state of panic – eyes open, heart pounding, perspiring, and breathing rapidly (Sharma, 2006). They could get out of bed and walk or run around, and some adults are at risk of preforming violent acts during this time. The subject is still in a sleep like state during night terrors outbursts and can be awoken with some difficulty (Sleep Association, 2016). One sleep terror episode can last anywhere from a couple of seconds to a few minutes, but some episodes may last up to thirty minutes (Mayo Clinic, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Essay On Sleep Deprivation Death by sleep deprivation is a very relevant and apparent problem. Yet in today's culture people glorify those who talk of how little sleep they get each night or boast of pulling all–nighters. Many people don't realize it, but sleep deprivation is often linked to an unknown sleep disorder (Progressive Medical Center). These disorders come in many different colors and sizes, ranging from trouble getting to sleep to constant nightmares and waking in confusion. This may not sound very monstrous however, disorders like insomnia, different parasomnias, and sleep paralysis can be very scary and ruin people's lives. Lack of sleep puts you at higher risk for heart problems, stroke, obesity, and even mental impairment. Sleep is crucial to rejuvenate and restore the brain and to regulate your body's growth development and healing. Sleep disorders are seen as monstrous because they prevent people from getting a healthy amount of sleep, which is damaging and harmful in many different aspects. As Beyoncé once said "Having peace, happiness, and healthiness is my definition of beauty. And you can't have any of that without sleep"(Beyoncé). One of the most essential elements to a great day is an even better nights sleep. When you wake up, your body has prepared you for your day. You will wake with better problem solving skills, the ability to make decisions, more creativity and a larger attention span. • 35. The Fairness Of Faith In Night By Elie Wiesel Kids tend to rebel against their parents as they grow older. In the memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel recalls his experiences with his family during World War II. His mother and sisters were taken away from him as soon as he arrived at Auschwitz, only his father remained. Elie Wiesel witnessed many terrible events during his first night at camp; the only thing that kept him in line was his father. Elie Wiesel's father kept him from possibly killing himself. When Elie Wiesel lives in the concentration camp with his fellow Jews, he begins to question the fairness of God, who he had followed his entire life. Elie Wiesel lost faith in God, particularly the faith that He would use His divine power to help him, and he began to rely on his father instead, which gave him more reason to live. When Elie Wiesel was a kid, he had extreme faith in his religion. Moshe the Beadle is the first person to question Wiesel's faith. Moshe the Beadle asks Elie Wiesel why he prays; after pondering the thought, Wiesel replies, "I don't know why" (p. 2). Elie Wiesel does not know the reason why he prays to God when he doesn't receive anything back. His faith now seems weaker, despite the hours he devotes to God. God gives him Moshe the Beadle when he wants to study the cabala, and his father won't help him, but once Wiesel arrives at the concentration camp, God shows no such help as he did at that time. • 37. Relationships In Elie Wiesel's Relationship With His Father When relationships are challenged, they can either be made stronger or destroyed. Elie Wiesel's relationship with his father is tested on numerous occasions throughout the time of the Holocaust. Wiesel writes about his horrific experiences, most of which are in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz, in his memoir Night. Throughout his time in the concentration camps, Wiesel manages to stick by his father's side, which is hard to do. In doing so, Wiesel's relationship with his father prospers, rather than declines. Wiesel's relationship with his father, although difficult to maintain at times, led to his survival during the Holocaust. As Wiesel writes in the beginning of his memoir, the relationship between him and his father is impassive and simple. Their relationship never really has much of an impact on Wiesel during his childhood. Wiesel mentions, "My father was a cultured, rather unsentimental man" (2). Because Wiesel's father never shows any affection towards Wiesel, it is hard for him to form any sort of relationship with him whatsoever. Wiesel also writes, "There was never any display of emotion, even at home. He was more concerned with others than his own family" (2). Wiesel's father was highly involved in the Jewish Community of Sighet, and he would even consult in public matters. Due to Wiesel's father's busy schedule, the bond between him and his son is neglected. As the enforcements of the Holocaust start appearing in Wiesel's hometown, his father's behavior begins to slowly change, making it easier for Wiesel to connect with him. While watching other families being deported, Wiesel, his father, and the rest of his family witness the Hungarian Police strike old men and women, without reason, with truncheons, for the first time. The next day, as they are being deported from the ghettos, Wiesel writes, "My father wept. It was the first time I had ever seen him weep. I had never imagined that he could" (16). Wiesel's prior belief that his father was emotionless is proven to be wrong before they even arrive at the concentration camps. Wiesel is able to relate to his father in this moment, for he too is terrified of what lies ahead. As Wiesel and his family arrive at Birkenau, the Nazis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Night Terrors And Sleep Nightmares INTRODUCTION A night terror or sleep terror is a very frightful event that a child and parents go through. Many parents who have a child who experiences night terrors have many questions. What is a night terror? How did he/she get night terrors? What are the symptoms? What can I do to stop night terrors? Those are many questions that parents and family members want answered by a doctor, psychologist or therapist. Unfortunately, they won 't receive many answers Night terrors also known as sleep terrors can be defined as a "sleeping disorder characterized by high arousal and an appearance of being terrified" (Meyers, 2014). Night terrors most commonly occur with children. Many people in general not just parents get confused between a nightmare and a night terror. Nightmares occur during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep which is a state of sleep where people are conscious. When a person wakes up from a nightmare they have a "vivid memory of a long movie like a dream" (nightterrors.org). Night terrors, on the other hand, occur "during NERM–3 sleep, within two or three hours of falling asleep, and are seldom remembered" (Meyers, 2014). Since the child is in such deep sleep he/she will not remember a night terror. Since the child cannot remember their dream it makes it hard for doctors and psychologist to figure out what the child is fearful of, and why it is occurring. Although it is difficult for professionals to diagnose, it is beneficial to the child not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Night, Hope, By Elie Wiesel Forty–two years after entering the concentration camp for the first time, Elie Wiesel remarked, "Just as man cannot live without dreams, he cannot live without hope" (Nobel Lecture 1). This means a lot from someone who endured almost two years of the terror in the WWII concentration camps. During these two years, Elie endured the sadness of leaving his former life and faith behind, the pain of living off of scraps of bread, and the trepidation of the "selections", where he almost lost his father. Even as the war got closer, the Jewish people remained hopeful and they tried to see the good in things, as absurd as it sounds. For example, when they were forced into the ghettos, people looked on the bright side, and found good things about them. Elie, looking back on the ghettos experience stated, "People thought this was a good thing. We would no longer have to look at all those hostile faces, endure those hate–filled stares" (Wiesel 12). So, even after the hate of the Germans had reached Sighet, the people were still thinking positive. They never even ventured to think about how situations could turn negative. When things did get negative, and they learned that they would have to be transported, they started having more pessimistic thinking, but they still were counting on a miracle to pull through for them. When Elie asked his father when they were expected to depart, he replied, "'The day after tomorrow. Unless...things work out. A miracle, perhaps...'" (Wiesel 18). This shows that Elie's family still had hope as they were going to be transported. They were more worried than they had been before, but they still had hope for a miracle. • 53. The Night By Elie Wiesel In Night by Elie Wiesel, the author reflects on his own experience of being separated from his family and eventually his own religion. This separation was not by any means voluntary, they were forced apart during the Holocaust. Wiesel was a Jew when the invasion of Hungary occurred and the Germans ripped members of his religion away from their home in Sighet. A once peaceful community where Wiesel learned to love the Kabbalah was now home to only dust and lost memories. Most members of that Jewish community were never to return, hell greeted them with open arms as they walked through the now rusty gates of Auschwitz. In order to survive unimaginable circumstances that were enforced in these camps, a boy had to hang on to his humanity. But by no means did humanity stay with the boy, being subjected to the horror of concentration camps, Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Elie Wiesel saw first–hand how members of other communities attempt to silence opposing voices. All of the pain that Wiesel saw inspired him to keep watch and tell stories for people who wouldn't live on to tell them for their own families. Stories are what keeps a person alive and through Eliezer's words that he puts down many are able to get a sense of closure in knowing what occurred at these camps. They are characterized by the sudden awakening during the night with feelings of disorientation and extreme confusion. These arousals are also called sleep drunkenness because those that experience these symptoms don't remember what they have done after waking up. The motor behavior is affected for those with this disorder; it is often regarded as normal, simple behavior. Sometimes, however, those experiencing the arousal disorder could become aggressive and sexually active without knowing it. This sexual behavior is often referred to as sexsomnia. Children with night terrors (also children with sleep talking and teeth grinding, among a few others) had a significantly higher anxiety score than did children with some of the other parasomnias (i.e.: enuresis) (Laberge 7). Family issues didn't seem to affect any of the parasomias (Laberge, et al 8). No one knows exactly what parasomnias are, and unfortunately, no one knows exactly what causes them, either. However, it has been discovered that parasomnias have a genetic link – they run in families. For example, if your child has night terrors, it is very likely that someone else in your family had either night terrors or some other form of parasomnia (confusional arousals, sleepwalking or sleep talking) (Mindell 263). • 63. What May Trigger Night Terrors? What May Trigger Night Terrors? Night terrors are a type of parasomnia, that cause screaming, intense fear, and flailing, while still asleep. These episodes are most common but not limited to children between ages of four to twelve, for they can also still occur in adults. Mostly children are affected by this parasomnia, but only three to six percent of them have these night terrors, and the percentage of occurrences in adults are lower. Some studies show that there are some variables, such as tiredness, or drugs, may cause a development of these disturbances during sleep. While most will grow out of their sleep terrors, some may not, and must find different ways to control or reduce their chances of having night terrors. Usually, night terrors are not normally due to psychiatric disorders, so with that in mind, it is logical to assume that they are often triggered by certain environmental factors. ... • 65. Night Terror Descriptive Writing Night Terrors My eyes crack open, but I see nothing. They need time to adjust to the pitch dark of my room, but I am both reluctant and eager to discover the source of what woke me. My heart beats rapidly, almost painfully against my chest. My mind registers that I was startled awake by some kind of noise, but it feels muddy, so I must have been in a deep sleep. Neon red numbers pierce the darkness, glaring at me from the digital alarm clock beside my bed. It reads 3:41 a.m. A long, ominous creak sounds from the hardwood floor at the end of my bed, and I gradually make out a large figure hovering over me. I focus on the shadowy silhouette in front of me, frozen in place while trying to get my bearings. Every blink allows me to see more details ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A careful thump sounds on the door, and I watch as it is slowly pushed open by my fifty–pound basset hound, Bagel. "It's just the dog, Edmund," I say to the big wuss clinging to me for dear life. I reach for his arms, which are wrapped around my stomach tightly and pull them none too gently away before his claws scratch at my skin, drawing blood like the last time he pulled this stunt. His shaking hasn't lessened and only increases when my innocent pooch nudges the door a little more with his nose so he can fit his fat little body through. Once inside, he wastes no time flopping towards the bed, looking up at me expectantly with his big brown eyes. Obliging his silent request, I don't hesitate to reach my hands down to pick him up and tuck him under my chin. His whole body wiggles in what I believe to be happiness, but I soon learn his true intentions. He worms his face past my shoulder to lick Edmund's nose, making the demon jump back with a blood–curdling shriek. As Edmund bolts out of my room to "safety," I call after him: "That's what you get for waking me up like that, you jerk!" As Bagel curls into a content ball against me, I make sure to tell him what a good boy he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. The Night Sky It was a dark and stormy night, the wind blows as the ghostly moonlight filled the darkness. George the highwayman made his way toward Bess the innkeeper's daughter. She was gazing out the window when the two of their eyes met. Hers, black as the night sky, and a dark red love knot placed on her hair. A red dress made of the fabric silk. Her hair was a dark brown, but could have been mistaken as black. Her outfit fit her personality as much as it did the highwayman. I hope he loves poetry. Bess thought. He rides toward her on his horse dressed in a fancy cloak colored velvet, with a curled white wig and doe brown skin, lace wrapped around his chin, and the most beautiful brown eyes anyone had ever seen. His boots sitting as high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Suddenly, George pulled out his pistol and shot at the redcoat closest to him. "How does a silver bullet feel in your gut." George squaked. Then the second redcoat came up and cried, "I wouldn't know, you didn't hit me!" The two remaining redcoats chased after George for as long as they could. "Yip yip," George tells his horse with a calm voice, "try and catch me, and I will give up my fortune to you." The redcoats continue to play in George's game. The redcoats sped up and suddenly called, "Highwayman, slow down or force will be a factor of this chase." George wittingly says, "Ok, if we have to!" George shoots the third redcoat. Now only one redcoat remains. The last red coat shrills at George, " Alas, it is the end for you." The redcoat pulls out his weapon and shoots for the highwayman's head. "You missed," George implies angrily, "and you shot my hat." George whips out his sword and turns around toward the red coat. He takes his head with one clean swipe of the blade. By the time George finds the perfect gift, it is already nighttime. He has no idea the other redcoats are tracking down Bess while he is still riding back to her. They raid the inn and drink all the ale. The redcoats quickly make their way to Bess's room, and tie her hands with a rope on the foot of her bed. I've got to find a way to warn the highwayman. Bess inferred. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Customer's Always Right? Have you heard of the Wal–Mart lingo "customer's always right?" Well, the lingo only work for Wal–Mart because the notion is far from that at Roadrunners or "Roadies." I started working night shift at Roadies in the beginning. And then moved to swing shift to opening shift at 4AM, Mondays thru Friday. So, I know the whole operation like the back of my hand. Roadies in Wapato, is known for its hot deli food. The convenience store is a one quick stop shop when you're in a hurry, for a quick bite to eat, or a convenient stop for gas when traveling afar or when the gas tank is just simply low on fuel. Especially with an icy cold hard beverage (for 21 years old and over) that'll do with hot wing justice. The place offers a totally different atmosphere throughout the day. It's a completely different operation from mornings, middays, and nights. The customers vary from different times of day and night and I can almost predict the type (crazy and crazier) of customers at the same time of the month as well. Customers at Roadies range from somewhat normal and polite to disrespectful. The customers in the morning are mainly farm workers and 95% don't speak English. So, I make do with the language barrier. A coworker of mine, Sarah Divina asked, "Will it hurt them (Mexicans) to at least try to learn some English? I can understand if they're new in this country, but most of them had been here for years." At first, it felt like I could only perform my job with one hand behind my back. ... • 71. Nature And Nature : The Physical Characteristics Of Nature When the word "nature" comes to mind, (at least to me and google images), scenes of thick, dense forests with light barely prevailing through the canopy, birds of paradise and their fruitful colors bathing in the tropical sun, and every imaginable shade of green encompassing the premise first come to mind. But for a girl born and raised in the Entertainment Capital of the World known no other than Las Vegas, the most natural things I have ever seen are the palm trees in my very backyard and the desert sands that occupy everything else. But just because my take on the physical characteristics of nature is narrower than others, does not mean I cannot appreciate nature on a more spiritual scale. Although most of my life takes place indoors, from attending school, to cheer practice, to even visiting the grocery store, I often find myself turning to nature as my getaway in many spare moments. When the chance presents itself, I occasionally will just sit in my backyard, embracing nature and all of its glory, from its sunlight hitting my skin or its slight breezes that balance out the Vegas heat. I may even bring a novel with me and read in peace, or more simply rest my body and mind and become one with my nature. The serenity of that time and place, of me enjoying what I call nature, creates an escape for my mind to wander and explore, and most importantly forget. My favorite time to do this is at night; where the scorching heat has now decreased to a cool nighttime ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Themes And Change In Barn Burning By William Faulkner In "Barn Burning" by William Faulkner, the setting of the story plays a very important role. Sarty struggles with the conflict of following his dad in completing illegal acts, or to follow his moral beliefs and disobey his father. When the Snopes family arrives at Major de Spain's mansion, Sarty has hope that his father will change his tendencies to burn down barns. Faulkner also shows a contrast between daytime and nighttime; during the day, Abner is less likely to do illegal things, and during the night is when he begins to act illegally again. At the end of the story, Sarty is at the top of a hill at midnight thinking about the changes that have occurred in his life. Through the use of location and time of day, Sarty's thoughts and emotions are shown within many different situations. Faulkner uses time of day to compare the different activities that Sarty and his father are involved in. During the day, Sarty is very hopeful that his father will change his illegal actions; also, during the day Sarty is mostly working, or in the courthouse. Soon after the Snopes family arrives at Major de Spain's mansion, Abner ruins a rug inside the house. Abner goes to court and receives a punishment of paying Major de Spain twenty bushels of corn; Sarty hopes that this punishment is enough to change his father's illegal actions. As Sarty works on the fields, he thinks to himself, "maybe this is the end of it. Maybe even that twenty bushels that seems hard to pay for just a rug will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Summary Of ' The ' O Clock News On The Eyes Darted Around... His eyes darted around the circle. There were twelve objects surrounding him. Without even realizing it, he was about to make the most important decision of his life. This was probably the most bizarre collection of items anyone will ever see. A book, a chicken leg, a ruler and a lipstick would have no business being together in any other circumstances. After a few more minutes, he crawled toward the seal. The man and the woman standing around the circle tensed in anticipation. At the last moment, he stopped, turned toward the miniature bale of straws, and picked it up. The woman stifled a groan, and the man turned away in exasperation. And just like that, the man and the woman have decided that their one–year–old son will never amount to anything. For as long as I care to remember, I have believed that there is no such thing as "free will". The 7'O Clock News on September 2, 2001 shook me to my core. The Chinese anchors shuffled their notes, put on the biggest smiles I had ever seen and announced that "the Empire of America has finally gotten what's coming to them". Soon, my classmates started cheering. As far as I could tell, I alone was disgusted. On the other hand, while Griffin does not specifically comment on the effects of nurturing on Himmler's life, I am inclined to believe that the influence of his father and the popular harsh German pedagogy masterminded the monster that was later responsible for the crimes against humanity. I first read B.F. Skinner's Beyond ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
