Section Title – Photographer Analysis
Subheading – Conceptual Practice, Genre, Photographer technique analysis.
Don’t forget to link text and images as much as possible. Always have images to
reflect what you are writing and do not be afraid of using arrows and circles to
point specific elements out,
(1)Conceptual Practice (Photographers name and body of work title)
Within this area, discuss the purpose and meaning of the work. What was the
photographer trying to achieve? Who was it about? Why? Is it personal to them in
anyway? What made them photographer capture this subject matter? Is it political
or a social piece of work? Discuss this. What was the context in which it was made,
does it reflect the issues and times in which it was made.
(2) Extracting the concept in 2 images
You can read the concept within this image by……… Then discuss the specific
image and explain how it reflects the concept, purpose and meaning.
4. How to Analyse a body of work
Remember the first column, “Identify and describe”, asks you to do just that, simply describe each section of the mis en
scene. Say what you see! The second Column is the more difficult one, “Justify and ask why?” you must come up with a
justification for why the photographer has decided to document the convention in that way, what could it mean or reflect?
What theme and mood does it create.Remember you are not doing it for every image you are looking to collate the
information from a whole body of work.

5. What is context?
-Eugene Richards takes an in-depth
and intimate look at the inhabitants of
3 troubled communities: East New
York; North Philadelphia; and the Red
Hook Housing Project in Brooklyn
-The United States accounts for 5% of
the world’s population.
-Yet it consumes 50% of the world’s
cocaine
-There were 107 murders, 145 rapes,
3,285 robberies, and 547 serious
assaults in East New York in one year,
in a population of 160 000

Richards’ offers a powerful insight,
and alerts us to how drugs can affect
the very fabric of our society.

genre conventions. Find out and refresh your memory on each genre’s aims and

subject?, what are the connotations?, high lights, low lights, contrast, saturation
does it help communicate the concept?)
