Question 1-

In what ways does your media product use, develop
  or challenge forms and conventions of real media
                     products?
For our ancillary products and film trailer we decided to both conform and subvert conventions depending on what we worked
on. We also used both product research, audience research and our general interests when looking at movie genres to come up
with the idea for our work including both our ancillary products and movie trailer. Along with this, we researched into theories of
theorists such as Andrew Goodwin, Vladimir Propp, Tzvetan Todorov and also using our own knowledge of basic codes and
conventions of music videos and trailers.

When researching for our ancillary products we concentrated on magazines, trailers and posters of supernatural and horror
trailers to gain ideas and also look into how directors, producers and artists produce their own music trailers and products
following music trailers, also gaining knowledge of our they would work around conventions, audience feedback and keeping up
with the latest trends. Our main inspiration for or poster was a film called ‘the rite’, we looked deeply into the poster of the rite
and how it relates to our film because of the connection with the genre chosen. However, we liked the idea of the poster that
much we became stuck as to how to change the poster because of copyrights and also we wanted our own original ideas to come
out into our poster, we wanted to be different.
    As you can see we changed the house style of the poster to the rites poster. Therefore we decided to go with black and white
  theme, which relates to the film trailer in which we created. We also thought this would magnify the genre as it would make the
 poster seem more mysterious. Also with both the poster and film trailer, we wanted to create a cliff-hanger and not giving a lot of
      information away concerning the ending of the film trailer and what could happen in the entire film, this would make the
                                                 audience more interested as a whole.
As a group we looked into
different real media products
already on the market. We
looked into how they used
conventions such as the
Guttenberg diagram and Rule
of Thirds.
This influenced us to look
into what we wanted to
subvert and conform too
within our own magazine
front cover. With our own
magazine front cover we
have decided to conform to
the conventions of a
magazine layout.



We then looked into
horror/supernatural posters.
We gained inspiration from
posters such as the Uninvited
and The Rite. In particular
we were drawn to the use of
Rule of Thirds and the way in
which The Rite had used a
cross the poster, this would
fit in with the narrative in our
film trailer.
We also made our posters
black and white as this is also
something we thought would
work well and has already
been used in real media
posters. We also knew this
would carry on our house-
style theme of black and
white.
As well as using posters and magazines for our inspiration we
    also used movie trailers that were relevant to our own film
    trailer. We used The Possession movie trailer and this
    influenced our story-line and series of events that happened in
    our movie trailer. The Possession also fits into the
    Supernatural/Horror movie genre so this made it more relevant
    to research movie’s in that genre as well as this one.
    From our research we gathered inspiration for different shots
    used such as over the shoulder shots used in our film trailer.
    We also used transitions used in The Possession such as fades
    and dissolves.




For example this is the part where we have used the over the
shoulder shot, and created an emphasis on the box and also Dan’s
struggle. This was also used in the possession trailer and shows the
girls struggle with the box as she has been possessed.
This is our idea of how we wanted our poster too look. This conforms too the rule of
                                             thirds and the Guttenburg Diagram, and the codes and conventions of real media
                                             products. We chose to conform to the rule of thirds as we felt our worked looked
                                             more professional, and information was easier to the eye. Our choice of shape, (e.g.
                                             the cross) leads you too look into the eyes of our character which is dramatic way of
                                             having our poster and this then draws the audience into our poster making them
                                             want to watch the film. We also conformed to the Guttenburg Diagram because
                                             we decided to continue with the middle theme on our poster for the credits and
                                             release date.



                                                                                                 This is how we produced our poster.
                                                                                                 We planned the over-all look of our
                                                                                                 poster down to the expression on our
                                                                                                 actors face to the colour scheme and
                                                                                                 manipulation of our photograph. We
                                                                                                 also added boxes to create a box in
                                                                                                 relation to our influence which was
                                                                                                 “The Rite”. On Photo-shop we used
                                                                                                 certain brushes we found online to
                                                                                                 create a rustic and grunge effect. We
                                                                                                 changed the colour of our actors
                                                                                                 colours to red to portray a sense of
                                                                                                 supernatural genres.
Our typeface has been fluent throughout all of ancillary products this is because we wanted to create a brand identity for our film
trailer, this then made our audience aware of our film. The typeface in which we chose conforms to the conventions of the genre
of film, we did this because we wanted our ancillary products to be obvious in a way of what the genre of film was. However with
our film trailer we decided to imply dramatic irony in our film with using a cliff hanger.
As well as our film poster we planned our front cover magazine before we manipulated and produced our
  magazine front-cover. We also looked at popular film magazine posters and gained influence from them, we
  looked at magazines such as Entertainment Weekly and Empire. We found it hard to find a magazine that
  specifically specialised in the Horror/Supernatual genre so we had to look at a different variety of magazines
  that specialised in a range of movie genres. However, we had to change our original idea to having all three
  actors due to only one actor being able to turn up. We used our main character and planned our magazine
  further.




We stuck to our original plan through-out the production of our film magazine. In college we had a box made that would appear as a significant part
in our magazine and in our film trailer and this was a main object in the film story-line. We wanted our actor standing in a particular stance, to
portray the mystery behind the contents in the box that is yet to be found out in the film. Originally we had the idea of having our image in black and
white, as this would support brand identity and the editing of our film trailer. However, we decided to keep our image in colour as we prefered the
look that it gave to the magazine. We used Photo-shop to create a smoke effect that would surround the actor and this would support the mystery
behind our story-line and the audience would want to know what was inside the box, which is the whole idea we wanted to conceive. Our magazine
conforms to the Rule of Thirds and we feel this gives a more professional look and feel to our magazine, the information added onto the cover is also
organised and easier on the eye. However, our magazine subverts to the Guttenburg Diagram due to us adding information in the “dead corners”.
We added our signature font to the front cover to support brand identity and the audience would know that the magazine would feature information
about the magazine and it’s contents. We also used our knowledge of codes and conventions of magazines has used in AS and we know what works
when making a magazine and why it works.
We also decided to create a institutional logo that looks professional. We went onto the internet and looked searched for logo
 tutorials. After a lot of searching, a website come up which looked adequate. It displayed a range or different step by step
 tutorials. Photoshop was opened up and a new blank canvas document was made. The tutorial was followed; first the canvas was
 filled black with the paint bucket tool. Then a range of different Photoshop techniques were incorporated to get to how the logo
 looks now. We wanted the logo to look as professional as possible, this is why we used a guide instead of just creating it. We had
 an idea of what we wanted the logo to look like originally so it just took time to search for one that looked similar, although we
 could of used a different guide and re-arranged it. When we had finished creating this logo, we exported it to JPEG format and
 inserted it into the video to establish the creator.




To conclude, our media products conform to real media products as we wanted to maintain a professional look and feel to our
work. Therefore we used such conventions as institutional logo, rule of thirds and the guttenburg diagram; to make our product
look professional and clear as to what the genre was.
