Subtracting small numbers

Learn how to subtract positive and negative numbers.

The Beginning
Before we learn how to
subtract numbers, we have to
learn how to add the
numbers.

Positive and Negative Numbers
We will use black tiles to represent
positive numbers.
We will use red tiles to represent
negative numbers.

Let’s do some adding!
3 + (-3) = ?

If you guessed 0, than
your answer was correct!
The 3 and -3 equal each
other out.

I think we need some more
practice!
What is 4 + (-7) = ?

You’re right! The
answer is -3!

We will do one more adding
problem.
What is 4 + (-2) = ?

You are correct! The
answer is 2!

Now we will move to negatives!
We will first start by
subtracting positives.

We can actually use the tiles to
flip around the problem.
5-2 = 5+(-2).

You are right! The
answer is 3!

Let’s try another one.
What is 7-2= ?

If you guessed 5, you
are correct!

We will try one more before
subtracting negatives.
What is 6-4= ?

6-4 is equal to 6 + (-4).
So….

The answer is 2! Great
Job!

Subtracting Negatives
Subtracting a negative is like
adding a positive.

Let’s try some.
What is 4-(-1) = ?

If you guessed 5, you are
right!

If you take out both
negatives and add an
addition sign, you will get
the right answer.

You’re right! The
answer is 7!

Let’s try one more.
What is 2-(-1) = ?

Remember 2-(-1) is equal
to 2+1.

If you guessed 3, you
are correct!
