Analysis of film trailers by genre
1. 1
The lighting here is back lit so that you can only see the silhouette of the
person. this is used to conceal the identity of this person to give a better
effect of mystery. This is commonly used in scary thriller films as they can
leave the viewers in suspense throughout the whole film to keep them
on the edge of their seats. The camera is also in a POV (point of view)
shot to put the viewers in that position to further the suspense.

2. 2
This is an over the shoulder shot. This shows the two characters but you cant see
any facial expression. therefore this shot is here to show how the woman is in
some sort of danger. This scene was part of a fast paced montage which is used
to build suspense in the trailer. The transitions as well were fading from black
screens into the clips to show a passing of time and a problem that they are
facing.
3. 3
In this scene, the police man got dragged very quickly but we are not shown what
it is that took him. This shows a sense of mystery and suspense as we don’t know
what took him. His facial expressions show that he was afraid when he got
dragged which was then also shown on the child and mother that were also there.
The director used a medium shot to show his face and also the people behind
him. He did this to show the reaction of the people to show them being scared.
This then rubs off on the audience. The music in this scene stopped so as soon as
the man got dragged, there was a scream mixed with a distorted sound. This gives
a jump effect to add to the suspense,

This suggestive graphic was used in a montage to fuel the tension. It adds to
the scenes and builds up the suspense. The font of the graphic looks broken
and dirty. This suggests death
Fiancée
5. 5
This scene is primarily there to show the background. This is mise en
scene and the set up of the background. It looks very creepy and this
builds the tension. The music behind this scene are string instruments
making screeching sounds. This puts more emphasis on the tension that
is built by the fast pace editing.
6. 6
This is a prop of a melted doll face. This adds to the mood of the scene
which is weird and unstable. there was little/ no music at this part
which indicates that something bad is going to happen. Also, the
music has stopped in this scene. This is usually used to add suspense
and to create an opening for a jump scare.
7. 7
This is the last scene in the trailer and as you can see, there is a hand
that has been made to look old and decayed. We don’t know who's
hand it is and it leaves the reader in suspense and makes them want to
know what it actually is and why it is haunting people. There was also a
scream and a sudden sound that happened when it made contact with
her hand to make the audience jump.
8. 8
This is the film title. Tells us what the films name is and is very simplistic to
also add to the suspense as the monster in the trailer may have been the
one who wrote it. There was also a voice that says “keep the lights out”. It
was distorted so we know it was not said by a normal human being. Also,
when the voice actor said “out”, the screen went black. This adds
emphasis to the title of the movie.
