OL 125: Personal Development Plan – SWOT Analysis (Milestone Two)
Student Name: Karen Keiper
Date: 9/18/16
Strengths (What do I do well?)
Weaknesses (Where can I make improvements?)
· I have great organizational skills. I am able to take something that is in complete disarray, whether it be a messy desk or a disorganized department, and get to where it is in a state of complete efficiency and order.
· I am able to problem solve with ease by looking at the problem from all sides and finding the best solution.
· I am a good team member, whether I am the leader or part of the support team. I am able to adapt to whatever role I am needed to play.
· I am a great listener. I try to really listen to what people are saying to understand what they are truly tying to convey.
· I am a very fast learner. I tend to pick up on new information/procedures/systems very quickly.
· I am a good researcher and am able to utilize many tools to find information needed.
· When I find a task boring, I tend to procrastinate in completing it.
· I doubt myself a lot. Even though I know I am capable of many things, I sometimes let my fears hold me back.
· I tend to stay within my comfort zone too long, instead of taking risks.
· I get nervous when having to talk in front of new people, whether it be in an interview or some sort of presentation.
· Since I am a fast learner, my patience wears thin for those who don’t.
Opportunities (What kinds of things could I be doing based on my strengths?)
Threats (Where could I be using my strengths and talents more productively?)
· I would like to utilize my organizational and problem solving skills to create a more streamlined purchasing process at my current job.
· My research, organizational, and problem solving skills would be good for a career in criminal justice.
· I would like to organize a team building event for my job in which different departments could learn to work together better.
· Most of my strengths would be beneficial in a Human Resources environment.
· I would like to be able to take one more class per term in order to achieve my Bachelor’s Degree faster.
· If I don’t start taking risks and trusting in my strengths, I will be stuck in the same unrewarding job.
· I will have a lot of competition in the job market from the younger generation when I finally receive my Bachelor’s Degree.
· Current family obligations may prevent me for giving 100%, or above, of my attention and/or time in order to prove myself as a valuable employee/manager.
· If I don’t overcome my nervousness in public speaking, future employers may perceive that as not being a strong leader.
Reflection: Write a one-paragraph reflection on what was most interesting to you in the SWOT analysis.
Doing this SWOT Analysis was harder than I perceived. Although listing my strengths and opportunities came easy, the other areas were harder to put into words. I think it is hard for most people to list their weaknesses, even though we all know we ha.

Doing this SWOT Analysis was harder than I perceived.
Although listing my strengths and opportunities came easy, the
other areas were harder to put into words. I think it is hard for
most people to list their weaknesses, even though we all know
we have them. It is hard to acknowledge/admit the weaknesses.
To be honest, there probably are a few more weaknesses that I
have that I did not list, because I have a hard time admitting
3. they are weaknesses. I also found the threats hard to list.
Knowing there are obstacles that are not within your control is
very scary. I think this is a very good tool to use in order to
better myself- by admitting my weaknesses and then be able to
take the proper steps in changing them into strengths.

Assignment #3 - Process Essay or Classification/Division Essay
Choose ONE.
For the Process Essay
AUDIENCE: Imagine magazine readers (ages 18 & up) reading
a self-help guide
FORMAT: Standard essay format, preset margins, 12 point font,
double-spaced,
standard American grammar
LENGTH: 2-3 full pages
4. DUE DATE: (Word Processed) Peer Draft due 10/11; Final
(edited) draft 10/13
There are two types of process essays. First there is the
traditional ‘how to’ essay which
essentially outlines the specific directions for a process. It is
similar to writing the
directions to a recipe – except it should be in paragraph format.
The second type of
process paper is a general analysis of that process. For this
paper you will describe the
process but not in specific steps. These processes are
traditionally a little more
complicated and not simple tasks. Imagine topics like, how to
make a million dollars or
how to have a perfect marriage. While there may be ‘tips’ it
won’t be a step-by-step
guide.
You can approach the next essay with either of the two
philosophies. Either specific
steps or general rules. Here are your topic choices:
5. 1. How to raise the perfect pup.
2. How to plan a vacation
3. How to prepare the perfect __________
4. How to write an essay
5. A topic of your choice pre-approved by the instructor
For the Classification/Division Essay
AUDIENCE: Sociologists analyzing American behavior
FORMAT: Standard essay format, preset margins, 12 point font,
double-spaced,
standard American grammar
LENGTH: 2-3 full pages
DUE DATE: (Word Processed) Peer Draft due 10/11; Final
(edited) draft 10/13
6. When a topic is classified and divided it is actually being
analyzed for varying
characteristics. Each subtopic is then explained and detailed to
indicate to the reader the
varying behaviors or traits that make it unique from the general
group.
You are asked to choose one of the topics below and then break
it down into sub-topics.
Each sub-topic should be detailed and described fully. Your
introduction and conclusion
will allow you to make generalizations and connections between
subject matter.
** This essay should allow you to use similar skills that had
been previously used in your
description essay as well as your illustrative essay.
Your general topic areas are:
1. Dating
2. Parenting styles
3. Friendships
4. ** An idea of your own, pre-approved by the instructor.
7. OL 125: Personal Development Plan – Setting Your Vision
(Milestone One)
Student Name: Karen Keiper
Date: 9-4-16
I have learned some new things about myself by taking the
assessments that I have completed, thus far, during this course.
I have learned that I have a type ENTJ personality, which is
fairly accurate. I am self-confident in what I know, I am a
straightforward kind of person, who tells it like it is. I use
research and analytics to help make important decisions. I have,
also, learned that, even though I feel like I am very productive,
there are some areas that I can improve upon to be even more
productive. The Locus of Control assessment just verified what
I already feel-that your choices are yours alone. That you, and
only you, are the keeper of your happiness and if something
isn’t working, then it is up to you to make the decision to
change whatever it is that you can change. I’ve learned that
even though I feel my stress level is low compared to many
others, there are factors in my life that have been increasing my
stress level, which in turn will cause me to experience burnout.
I feel that this is already starting to happen, as I have been
getting sick more often than normal and I am more exhausted
than I have ever been.
Even though I am an organized and productive person, I am a
huge procrastinator. I tend to wait until the last minute to get
8. certain tasks done, while others, I complete right away. I’m not
sure why I do this. It is not like I do not know how to complete
these tasks. Maybe I just find the tasks too easy, or mundane,
and know I can tackle them quickly at the last moment. I have
always been a person that needs to be challenged and when I am
tasked with something not very challenging, I have no
motivation to get it done right away. This goes for every aspect
of my life, from school to work to personal ventures. I am
hoping that by doing this personal development plan, I will be
able to change this bad habit.
I have, also, been overlooked for two promotions in the last two
years. My employer has not given me any feedback as to why,
so I am left to guess. I feel I do not interview well, and that
may be my issue. I tend to get nervous during interviews, even
though I know I am more than qualified for the positions. I am
hoping this development plan can provide me the steps I need to
be able to step out of my comfort zone and ace any interview I
may have in the future.
My goal for this plan is to be able to either achieve a promotion
at my current place of employment, or to obtain a new and
better position with another company, within the next year.
From reading about how personal development plans are written
and put to use, I am hoping it is the motivational tool I need to
move forward in my career goals, as well as some personal
goals I would like to set for myself (such as health and
relationships).
