Our Core Mission:
Promote highway safety through education and enforcement of all Iowa law
and Federal regulation.

Who we are…
MVE has up to107 sworn police officers, which work the road or
weigh station according to schedule. We have officers working
varying shifts and seven days a week. Officers are certified and
trained to cover a wide variety of incidents in and out of the CMV
world.

• What we do…
• Specialize in the enforcement of all federal regulation as
they pertain to CMV’s and their drivers. Equipment to
weight to hours of service.
• Enforce all Iowa law both, traffic and criminal code.
• Provide support to other law enforcement agencies as
needed in times of natural disasters, dignitary support,
and general community policing.

across the state as MVE deems necessary
for Departmental needs.
Most all candidates must relocate for
employment with MVE, and reside within
the county for which the opening was
posted.

Minimum hiring requirements…are set by the Iowa Law Enforcement
Academy, you must meet all of them.
Be a U. S. Citizen and a resident of Iowa or intend to become a resident
upon being employed;
Be 18 years of age at the time of appointment;
Hold a valid Iowa driver's license;
Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol
Be of good moral character
as determined by a thorough background investigation including a fingerprint search conducted of local,
state and national fingerprint files and have not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral
turpitude;

Successfully pass physical fitness tests!

Not be opposed to use of force to fulfill duties;
Be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate;
Have uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100 in both eyes, corrected to
20/20, and color vision consistent with the occupational demands of law
enforcement
Have normal hearing in each ear (hearing aids are acceptable if a
candidate can demonstrate sufficient hearing proficiency to perform all
necessary duties of a law enforcement officer)
Be examined by a physician and meet the physical requirements necessary
to fulfill the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer.
Undergo psychological testing.
Undergo cognitive (Basic Skills) testing.

PT testing-in order to move forward you
must at least meet the minimum
performance standard for your age &

Take and pass the Peace Officer Selection Test (POST) with at
least 70%, which measures these basic skills:
Arithmetic
Reading Comprehension,
Grammar
Incident Report Writing.

Psychological Testing-complete this 567
question exam called the Minnesota
Multiphasic Personality Inventory.
**The results of this exam to be reviewed by a psychologist and applicant**

Polygraph Interview-Submit to a polygraph
administered by the Department of
Criminal Investigations (DCI).
**Outcome determines progress in hiring process**

MMPI Interview-Personal interview with a
mental health professional to discuss exam
results and personality traits. Costs covered
by hiring authority.

Oral Board Interviews-Conducted by a panel of 3
to 5 MVE management staff.
Candidates are ranked according to performance
on a standard grading scale, which may
determine conditional offers of employment and
preferred locations of employment.

Background investigations- Thorough
investigations into a candidates past,
education, financials, personal history.
Could include all family members, friends
and significant others. Not just references
given.

Conditional Offers of employment-This is
not an official job offer…This is conditional
upon passing a medical examination by a
doctor of MVE’s choice…not just a
physical, but a full examination.

The Official offer for employment to be a
state certified police officer for the Iowa
Department of Transportation.

Upon hiring all new officers must
successfully complete a 16 week field
training program (FTO). This program
pairs new officers with their perspective
sergeants and trained senior officers to
safely and effectively learn how to be a
Motor Vehicle Officer.
**New employees may not be retained if they are unable to grasp their new career**

After graduating from FTO, Officers will be
given an academy date…New officers
must meet all requirements and graduate
from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.
**Much like college or high school**

Full-time employment…the long road to an
exciting and very rewarding career in law
enforcement.
Officers work on their own roughly 1 full
year after accepting the job officer.

•Uniforms-coats, hats, footwear, leather gear, class A & B uniforms and
cleaning. (Under garments and socks not supplied)
•Protective gear- Glock handguns, AR-15 rifles, Taser, ASP baton,
chemical agent, ballistic vests.
•Personal computers & smart phones
•Other law enforcement related equipment

  • 3. Motor Vehicle Enforcement Who we are… MVE has up to107 sworn police officers, which work the road or weigh station according to schedule. We have officers working varying shifts and seven days a week. Officers are certified and trained to cover a wide variety of incidents in and out of the CMV world.
  • 4. Motor Vehicle Enforcement • What we do… • Specialize in the enforcement of all federal regulation as they pertain to CMV’s and their drivers. Equipment to weight to hours of service. • Enforce all Iowa law both, traffic and criminal code. • Provide support to other law enforcement agencies as needed in times of natural disasters, dignitary support, and general community policing.

  • 9. Motor Vehicle Enforcement MVE posts openings for specific locations across the state as MVE deems necessary for Departmental needs. Most all candidates must relocate for employment with MVE, and reside within the county for which the opening was posted.
  • 10. Motor Vehicle EnforcementHere is the process Minimum hiring requirements…are set by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, you must meet all of them. Be a U. S. Citizen and a resident of Iowa or intend to become a resident upon being employed; Be 18 years of age at the time of appointment; Hold a valid Iowa driver's license; Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation including a fingerprint search conducted of local, state and national fingerprint files and have not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude;

Motor Vehicle Enforcement Not be opposed to use of force to fulfill duties; Be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate; Have uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100 in both eyes, corrected to 20/20, and color vision consistent with the occupational demands of law enforcement Have normal hearing in each ear (hearing aids are acceptable if a candidate can demonstrate sufficient hearing proficiency to perform all necessary duties of a law enforcement officer) Be examined by a physician and meet the physical requirements necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer. Undergo psychological testing. Undergo cognitive (Basic Skills) testing.

  • 14. Motor Vehicle Enforcement Our hiring process, Stage Two: Take and pass the Peace Officer Selection Test (POST) with at least 70%, which measures these basic skills: Arithmetic Reading Comprehension, Grammar Incident Report Writing.

Candidates are ranked according to performance on a standard grading scale, which may determine conditional offers of employment and preferred locations of employment.

  • 21. Motor Vehicle Enforcement Our hiring process, Stage Nine The Official offer for employment to be a state certified police officer for the Iowa Department of Transportation.
  • 22. Motor Vehicle Enforcement Upon hiring all new officers must successfully complete a 16 week field training program (FTO). This program pairs new officers with their perspective sergeants and trained senior officers to safely and effectively learn how to be a Motor Vehicle Officer. **New employees may not be retained if they are unable to grasp their new career**
  • 23. Motor Vehicle Enforcement After graduating from FTO, Officers will be given an academy date…New officers must meet all requirements and graduate from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. **Much like college or high school**
  • 24. Motor Vehicle Enforcement Full-time employment…the long road to an exciting and very rewarding career in law enforcement. Officers work on their own roughly 1 full year after accepting the job officer.
